Resumo: Before the fall of the wall, the city was located at the periphery of the Western part of town. Today it is located in the middle of Berlin.

This is one of the districts which connect East and West. It is the smallest district of Berlin but the one with the highest population density and the lowest average age.
The town is a multicultural part of town that is well-known also outside of Berlin. This „exotic area“ has a specific attractiveness for young people, artists and „outsiders“.

The town is characterized by a high percentage of ethnic minorities, as well as a high percentage of poverty and unemployment (13 % of the population live from social benefit, 28 % are without paid employment). About 40 % of the inhabitants are of non-German origin. A lot of these people with migration background have their roots in Turkey and have mostly lived in Berlin for three generations. The togetherness and the co-existence in close neighbourhood are specific characteristics of the town.

The average educational level is very low (15,5 % of youth leave the school without a certificate). This is also a reason for the problematic situation when trying to place young people and adults into the first and second job market.

However, the district is very lively and culturally flowering. Lots of international cafés, bars, restaurants, stands on the streets and shops attract many people from Berlin and tourists alike, looking for originality.

Perfil: It is vital for the volunteer to enjoy working with small children (1,5 to 3,5 years-older, because the volunteer will work in the group for small children) and have an interest in education according to the principles of Rudolf Steiner. Of benefit, but not essential, is some experience in education, an interest in gain-ing professional experience in this area and familiarising themselves with the Steiner approach to education.

As the teachers will be working in very close cooperation with the volunteers, the young people should be open and able to work in a team. A basic knowledge of Germanwould be nice. It alleviates the communication and the daily teamwork. The volunteer should be willing to contribute his/her skills and interests, be they of a musical, artistic, creative or craft-related nature to the work of the kindergarten, take the initiative and be prepared to shoulder some responsibility.
Age: 18 until 30 years old

Tarefas: The role of a volunteer in the kindergarten would be very similar to that of a trainee. He or she supports the teachers in the younger or older group and is fully integrated in its everyday life. The volunteer naturally also has space for his or her own creative input. He/she is part of the teaching team and will participate in the regular meetings to get to know this aspect of the job. In our kindergarten, the volunteer has the opportunity to gain some first-hand experience of teaching and Steiner educational methods, which could provide a valuable basis for future career decisions.

Areas of activity:
The volunteer will take responsibility in everyday play and activities with the children, spending the day in the group. He/she will be allocated his/her own responsibilities, such as the preparation of breakfast, accompanying the children’s period of free play, or choosing and playing finger games and songs.

He/she will accompany excursions and walks, and eat with the group at mealtimes. He/she will accompany regular activities, such as baking and handicrafts, and be given the opportunity to implement his/her own ideas, like wood-work with the children, making felt , sewing, baking or drawing. As part of the teaching team, he/she is responsible for creating and preserving a good environment for the children. The volunteer will work in close cooperation with the teaching team, and apply his/her own interests and abilities. Those more focused on the arts and crafts could do woodwork with the children, for example, or do a little landscaping in the garden. Those more musically inclined could learn finger games and practice them with the children, or sing and make music together with the children.
