Resumo: The hosting organization is located in the heart of the country.
The city is one of the most developed and visited capitals in Europe and growing awareness and interest of Greek society in the developing world and issues of poverty and inequality is observed. Consequently, an alternative popular movement within Greek society is growing that opposes the economic and political exploitation of the developing countries.
Such a movement, which opposes certain, unfair aspects of globalization, can be seen as the catalyst for the development of new initiatives, in their majority disinterested in party-politics, however focused on finding ethical alternatives within the existing system. On the whole, they express a cynicism regarding political engagement on a party level and a turn towards the activity and campaigns of NGOs and politics on a global scale.
The concept of volunteering and charities in Greek society is still very very weak. Anyway, we can say that it is growing and becoming more and more popular, especially among the youth. Programmes such as EVS have been increasingly successful in Greece.
Greek society is becoming more aware of the fact that poverty can be more effectively tackled through a sustainable development approach rather than through global philanthropy.
Perfil: Age: 18 until 30 years old.
Tarefas: The EVS volunteer in FTH will have the chance to work with a team of motivated young people. Although the organization is periodically facing difficulties due to the Greek social and economic situation, volunteer will have the chance to be involved in activities that if from one side demands energy and enthusiasm from the other side are inspiration, motivation and source of these energy and enthusiasm.
Volunteers will be having the chance to learn about the idea of the organization and ethical consuming and to take initiatives for projects and activities inside the organization. The organization can offer to a young volunteer the opportunity to work in a creative and modern environment full of ideology, diverse intercultural background but based on fe simple and specific rules that all inside the organizations are asked to respect in order to guarantee the successfull daily operation of the activities. Moreover living into contact mainly (but not exclusively) with young people from Greece they will have the possibility to know deeply the Greek culture and to achieve a more multicultural way of living and thinking. Language lessons will be offered on a periodical base for all the duration of the project. In conclusion, the volunteers are going to have several learning opportunities through non-formal and informal educational activities. The organization offers a peculiar mix of learning experience: it is an organization that links informal education together with market rules and among this two extreems creates a wide range of opportunities for implementing activities.
Any volunteer has something to offer for an association like FTH that cover several range of activities. Volunteer will mainly work side by side with the responsible of the world shop and helping in the constant involvement of local volunteers. He/she will help in the organization of activities indoor and outdoor such as festivals and educational meetings. He/she will help in the periodical update of the website and will support some administration tasks in the organization.
Typical activities for the volunteer:
50% of his/her serivce time will be as part of the team of volunteers helping daily in the activities of the No profit shop and its e-shop. The team will be coordinated by Sevi Papadopoulou, responsible for the worldshop. This work can some time present a routine aspect, but it goes without saying that the worldshop is for each organization world wide the strongest and most important tool to support small producer and make their life better, achieving the organization's goals. The other 50% of his/her service time will be as support of the association in the web communication, office tasks and organization of periodical activities (Christmast' bazaar, exhibitions, events, cultural festivals, educational activities) coordinated by members of the board of directors and EVS coordinator Fay Orfanidou. In the framework of the educational, raising awareness and promotional activities, a 10% of his/her service time will be used for possible personal projects, which the volunteer will want to implement after discussion with the organisation.
We are very flexilble to proceede with slight changes of the tasks sharing, on the base of the volunteers' skills, but it is clear from the beginning that organization's needs and priorities will constitute the base to build any new form of cooperation on the base of the young volunteer's proposals.
