It is the committee, who is taking the main decisions, administrating the budget and who is the employer of the staff. There is a salaried staff of 4 people looking after the place, running the administration, supervising the activities, etc. Otherwise, voluntary work is the main principle of the institution. Mutual respect and tolerance is fundamental for the philosophy of the organization . The organization is a dynamik and lively institution for the local community. An offer that is very much depending on initiative and manpower.

The organization has the following facilities: a workshop/studio open for all kind of creative works; a music room that can be hired and used as rehearsel room; two computer rooms with computer games (no internet); kitchen / café offering sandwiches, fruits, soft drinks, etc. Various rooms can be used for meetings, workshops, etc; the former threshing floor is often hired for events. (i.e. gymnastics for mothers, playing groups for day-care mothers and their children; theatre; concerts; christmas market, private parties, etc.) Adults can initiate and organise new activities and announce them in the monthly calendar. At the moment the following activites are in the programme: playgroup for smaller children accompanied by an adult; day-care playgroup; scout meetings; Junior chessclub; “Dinner and Canastaclub. There is a café for youngsters and adults, offering cakes, coffee, tea and juice.

The volunteer will mainly work together with her/his contact person and will be involved in the upcoming work. The main focus lies on the work with the children and youngsters in the workshop/studio which gives the volunteer the possibility to display and develop creative ideas and by this build up a good contact with the children.

The organization is in a town on the island with app. 14.000 inhabitants. This corresponds to an average sized town in Denmark. The town is a quiet place to live and it is, there is not doubt, a rural area. Most of the inhabitants work in Odense which is about 20 minutes away from Odense. There is a good train connection to Odense. Odense is the most important city on the island Fyn and the 3rd largest in Denmark.

The organization has been hosting EVS volonteers from different countries since 1999 and the intercultural experience has been very rewarding, both, for the volunteers and the organization and its users.

The contact persons for the volunteer at the organization have been there since the beginning of the activities in the field of European Voluntary Service and have been in touch with volunteers from different cultures and countries. They are looking forward to further international experiences and insights into foreign cultures.

Perfil: It is part of the daily routine to talk to the people visiting the organization . So it is essential that the volunteer is open-minded and social and that s/he likes to go up to people, both adults and children. In order to make communication possible, basic English knowledges are necessary.
We would like to invite people with a creative approach. The volunteer will spend most of his time in the workshop/studio. S/he should therefore like all kind of creative work. S/he should have an interest in working, speaking and playing with children and teenagers of different ages. It will help if the volunteer is able to do things on her/his own initiative.
The volunteer has to be aware of the fact that the organization is situated in a rural area.

Tarefas: The volunteer will spend most of his/her time working creatively with the children. However, another important part of the work is the social contact with the children: playing games, motivating them to new activities or just being there for them and having a chat, etc. The volunteer will be present during the opening hours of the centre and work under the supervision of his/her contact person. The volunteer will mainly be in the workshop/studio, working creatively with the children. The children are from 10 years upwards, many of them teenagers. The work in the studio can include every kind of creative work, like painting, drawing, collages, working with clay, with wood, preparing christmas decoration and gifts – the possibilities are endless and the volunteer and the children are always welcome to come with suggestions and ideas. One aim is to be inspired by the intercultural and international idea. The children will love to try new things and the volunteer is invited to come up with own ideas. Both sides will profit from the cooperation with regard to the language, the knowledge of other countries’ traditions and customs and inspiration. The children will be motivated to work creatively and feel like not doing the same old stuff all the time.

Apart from the work in the studio, the volunteer will assist in the day-to-day running of the activities and spend time with the children/youngsters visiting the organization . This can be preparing food for the café, playing table games, playing computer games, playing football or other outdoor or indoor games, keeping company in general. If the volunteer feels like cooking or baking, s/he is welcome to use the kitchen, and maybe do this together with those children who are interested in it.

The volunteer will be encouraged to use her or his cultural background during the work. This will give the children an intercultural learning experience. A possible personal project could be the organisation of a theatre play or a revue in cooperation with the other co-workers. The many facilities of the house can be used to be inspired to iniate a personal project. It is very much up to individual volunteer’s personality what s/he makes out of it. All it needs is initiative. One has to keep in mind that the children visiting the place are coming voluntarily and there is no fixed schedule for their coming and going. This can make it more difficult to plan things. The volunteer is invited to help with the maintainance of the organization . This could be for example the painting and decoration of a room, etc. There will also always be other people around helping on voluntary basis to fulfil this kind of work.

The volunteer will not substitute staff members. The volunteer will undertake hours of no more than 35 each week, and will have min. 2 days free each week. S/he will be present during opening hours. The centre is open from Monday to Thursday, from 11 to 16:30. Monday evening there is Juniorclub from 19 – 21, Wednesday is open for everybody from 19 – 21. On Fridays, the organization is closed, this could be a perfect day for language training. The volunteer has the right to take 12 working days off as holidays during her/his 6 months stay.

The volunteer will be living in a host family. Dansk ICYE and the organization aim to find a family living as close to the project as possible. The host family does not receive payment but is opening their home to the volunteer based on the interest of an intercultural understanding. The life in a host family will faciliate the integration in the local community, and will accelerate the process of both, language and intercultural learning. All work the volunteer is doing, will be done under the supervision and in close contact with her/his contact person on the project. The volunteer is invited to ask all kind of questions that might occur and discuss problems with the staff. By working in the organization the volunteer will be in contact with a large number of people of the local community.

Furthermore, Dansk ICYE will appoint an additional contact person to the volunteer (a co-worker of Dansk ICYE). S/he will be of assistance in case of questions or problems concerning the daily life in the project, host family or spare time. It will arranged min. 2 meetings between Dansk ICYE, the organization and the volunteer to make sure that the aims and ideas of both volunteer and project are reached.

Dansk ICYE will provide professional language training.
The volunteer will attend the on-arrival training organised by the National Agency as well as nationally organised mid-term meetings. Furthermore, s/he will be invited to social events organised by Dansk ICYE for exchange students and host families.
