Resumo: We live in a small town but have all the necessary Danish facilities. Nature and sea are close by – one of the best windsurfing areas in the world is near! It is easy to get around via train or bus which are connecting us to the rest of Denmark. We are a Christian school, which you will notice during our everyday life where we have devotion time. International projects are important to us and we have participated in different projects over the last years. Several teachers speak both English and German.
Near the school there are the following facilieteter - one of the best handball teams I DK, magnificent scenery with the national park, the opportunity for fishing in river, lake and sea. In our city it is also possible to access many types of sports, churches, scout and shops. Less than 45 minutes by train you can reach three cities where there are several great football teams, cinema, café life, kayaking, museums, hiking opportunities and plenty of shopping.
The organization is a type of school called a Efterskole. It is a special Danish phenomenon. Underneath you’ll find a description of the concept: The Danish Efterskole. We see ourselves as a mixture of a home, a school and a setting for young people. Most of our students come from well functioning homes and at our school they find a place where they can grow and develop as people.
Host facilities
When you become a volunteer at Efterskolen we can offer you a place to live situated at the school. You get your own room in an apartment which you will share with 1-2 other young people, who also work at the school. You have the possibility to eat your meals at the school or make your own food at the apartment. In special cases we have used a host-family but normally we have good experiences with our volunteers staying at the mentioned apartment.
Teach at a Danish Efterskole
An efterskole is a unique Danish residential school, where students from the ages of 14 to 18 can choose to spend one or two years to finish their primary education. The first efterskole was founded about 150 years ago. The schools are closely related to the Danish Folk High School and the educational ideas of N.F.S. Grundtvig (1789-1872), who wanted schools to provide enlightenment for life rather than formal vocational training.
Each efterskole is a self-governing independent institution and it deals with both the educational and personal development of the students. The efterskole embraces a common educational focus on enlightenment for life, general education and democratic citizenship. Compared to public schools the efterskole has substantial freedom in terms of choice of subjects, teaching methods and educational approach. These vary in accordance with the school’s political, religious or pedagogical orientation. Freedom of the efterskole is assured by substantial state subsidies to both schools and students.
One thing that is unique about the efterskole is the teacher-student relationship. The teacher is responsible for both teaching and supervision outside of school hours. This means that teachers and students are together all day from the time the students wake up until they go to bed. This often engenders a close, personal and non-formal relationship between students and teachers.
Most efterskoles offer the same subjects and final examinations as the public schools, but many focus on special subjects like physical education, international cooperation, music, theatre, or various kinds of special education.
There are more than 260 efterskoles spread across Denmark, mostly in rural areas or near provincial towns. At present approximately 28.500 students attend the schools. Efterskoles vary in size but most have approximately 100-120 students. At organization we have approximately 90 student.
The students give some of the following reasons for choosing to attend an efterskole:
1. a need to change to a new environment or to get a fresh start
2. a wish to meet new friends
3. an aspiration for personal development, improvement of self-confidence
4. a need to improve skills and knowledge of basic subjects
5. a wish to try those subjects and extracurricular recreational activities offered by the efterskole or to devote more time and energy to certain subjects e.g. music, theatre, and physical education
6. a need to mature and become able to make a more qualified choice concerning future life and educational direction

Perfil: The profiles of the volunteers:
Since a volunteer at the organization will be spending a lot of time with our students it is important that the volunteer loves being together with young people – and it would be appreciated if it could also be through sports or music. Furthermore it is important that the volunteer wants to be at the special type of school which a Danish Efterskole and is prepared to be at a Christian school.
Age: 18 until 30 years old
Tarefas: The activities/tasks for the EVS-volunteer at Solgaarden:
You will have to teach various subjects together with a Danish teacher. The subjects could be any sport, music, drama, English, German, cultural awareness, history, geography, social studies etc. – depending on your competences
Sport or music is in our opinion a good place to meet the students and therefore much of your time as a volunteer will be used to do sports or play music together with the students.
Once every week you will have an evening duty (supervision) with other teachers – eat dinner with the students, help students during their homework hour, take part in an evening activity (sport, music, games, pc etc.)
The schools are also open for students during weekends, which mean that you will take part in some weekend activities maximum once a month. During weekends students cook, relax, do sports, do leisure activities arranged by either students or teachers etc.
You will be assisting in the kitchen with the other employees together with the students who help in the kitchen (ex. 1-2 days a week)
Your work:
35 hours a week (teaching/ be together with the student + supervision Monday-Friday plus weekends once in a while). Some weeks it will be more than 35 hours a week some less. You will also get the possibility of learning Danish at a local language school. Language school is included in the 35 hours of work.
