Resumo:
The organization is the service and information center for independent travellers who visit Rotterdam. In a informal way, every visitor can orientate themselves on a stay off the beaten track in town. The organization crew knows a lot of inside city tips besides the main touristic highlights and offers a lot of (almost) free services.

The organization's information and services The aim is to introduce young budget travellers into the city life of Rotterdam: to live the life like other young Dutch people do: alternative and in a budget way. By searching on the internet, browsing around at the streets and own experience the crew knows how to help out the visitors. Besides the info section the organization creates own tours which people can walk or bike (the real Dutch way). Other services the organizationoffers are city maps, book exchange, day lockers, free hostel reservations, last minute hotel deals and internet. In this way we have created a real information and service center where yearly about 8000 young travellers hang out.

Every year the organization produces a free budget guide Simply the Best. Within 80 pages you get to know the Rotterdam life. This guide is produced in 15.000 copies and send all over Rotterdam, The
Netherlands and Europe.

In Rotterdam a lot of free festivals take place from May up to September. With some of these festivals the organization participates with a own mobile information place to inform visitors about the variety the city has to offer.

The visitors of the organization
Especially in the summer months July and August the center is filled with people from all over Europe. Spanish, Italian and English are most spoken around this time of the year. 75 % of the visitors is between 15 and 30 years old and not Dutch.

The organization focuses her information and activities on budget tourists (backpackers) who are visiting Rotterdam. Another target group are (international) students that are new in Rotterdam.

The organizationis run by one paid staff member and one volunteer that works year round. Around 8 volunteers help out with the Simply the Best. In the summer period there are around 10 more paid staffmembers to help out in Sleep-in De Mafkees. The EVS volunteers are part of the crew between May and November Sleep-in de Mafkees

In July and August the organization runs Sleep-in De Mafkees, which is located in the same building. Here people can spend the night, have a shower and breakfast for only 10 euro. It is located in an old skating rink and is very basic. There are 124 beds divided over 2 dorms.

People who stay in De Mafkees often use the place as a basecamp during their stay in the Netherlands because of the location just besides the central station and cheap price.

About Rotterdam
Rotterdam (600.000 inhabitants) is the second largest city and one hour by train away from Amsterdam. The harbour (one of the largest in the world), the (multi)cultural population and new architecture give the place an international atmosphere. It is a trendy city with a lively nightlife, a large shopping area and a river running through the heart of the city. It has a remarkable skyline and features in a lot of films and commercials. There is an active young, creative and innovative art scene who come up constantly with new projects. With other words; there is a lot of variety in everything where you have to find your own way through.

Perfil: We like to invite volunteers who have interest in working with youngsters (age 15-25) from all over
Europe and the world.

At the centre and De Mafkees is English the main spoken language. Knowledge and experience of the English language is a pre. Another extra language is more then welcome.

As a volunteer you'll have to dive into the city life and activities of Rotterdam. A curious and open mind help you (and us) finding the way and to set up services, activities for the centre and visitors.

You'll cooperate with a team and you need to be able be flexible and work independent as well. All the activities will take place under supervision of a professional.

We are open to all kinds of sending organisations.

Age: 18 until 30 years old

Tarefas: EVS volunteers participate for 4 days a week at the organization. They will be part of the complete organisation and join in all activities concerned.

At the organizationis proving and sharing experiences/opinions about activities and sights in Rotterdam an important segment of the service minded way of working. As an EVS volunteer you'll have to discover first what is going on in town, how you can easily find several popular places and where is (for example) the cheapest record store or internet place in town. This will take some weeks and tours through the city centre.

By then you'll be able to help out other budget travellers who are new in town. You will inform on the possibilities that Rotterdam has to offer on sleeping, eating, architecture, places to go out and so on.

We will learn you how to make reservations for hotels, how to the arrange bike rental service and all the other services which are provided at the centre. EVS volunteers will learn about general work and the daily business of running a service desk (for example, keep the website up to date, copy our own brochures, discovering what is going on in town, answering the phone, using the registration system
and reservation system etc).

The free budget guide Simply the Best is one of the main products of the organization. Around the month May a
new edition appears and additional tasks can be done. Tasks where you can think of are making photos, correcting and checking, doing research for places where the guide can be send to, spreading the Simply in the city.

Other contributions are made in producing new products/services for the target group of the organization. The content of a new service/product can be your idea, based on your Rotterdam experience and opinion what can be a topping on the already services of the organization. Depending on the size of the project you'll
work this out in a team or on your own.

The EVS volunteers assist in promoting the city and the organisation the organization while we are at festivals
and other events with a mobile information point. Tasks where you can think of are handing out flyers and Simply's, chat with people who pass by, create leaflets and gadgets in the preparations of the festival/event.

While de Mafkees is open in July and August, your time is for 50% to the Sleep-in where you will help out in taking care of the daily business, like check-in young tourists, running breakfast or bar duties.

Also the EVS volunteer will organize activities for the guests of De Mafkees.

Service and Learning opportunities of the EVS volunteers
We will find adequate accomodation for the volunteer. We can arrange a language training (formal or non-formal) throughout their stay.
