Resumo: The school is located in the little village pop. 300) in Southern Denmark on the west coast of Jutland, just 5 km from Wadden Sea National Park and 45km from the German border. The area is one of historical importance and natural beauty with some fantastic beaches nearby. The area has lots to offer in terms of sightseeing, but the town itself offers little of interest apart from the school and a church. The town is situated on Route 11 just 10 km from the historic town – Scandinavia’s oldest town with both a Viking museum and centre.
The school is easily accessed by train with links to both Germany in the South and Esbjerg in the north, although trains are infrequent and expensive. The capital Copenhagen is approximately 4 hours away by train (3 hours by car). The nearest airport is Billund (1 hr by car). The school can provide a bicycle as there are many good cycle paths in the surrounding area and very few hills.
Perfil: As a school, we are preferablly looking for a volunteer with previous experience working with young people and some type of teaching experience. Most of our students speak English at a high level, and to ensure that the volunteer has the best possible chance of establishing contact with our students, members of staff and others, they must be proficient in English at an advanced level with knowledge of French, German or Spanish a bonus. It would be helpful if they are creative, talkative and out-going, with an ability to communicate to large audiences. The volunteer should also be hard-workng, flexible and engaging as well as have a passion for languages and travel. A knowledge of politics and current affairs would be beneficial.
We would like to ensure that we receive the right candidate by carrying out interviews on skype.
Age: 18 until 30 years old
Tarefas: The planned activities for project will vary depending on the volunteer’s personal background and previous experience, but we would expect that the volunteer has at least had some previous experience working with children, has an interest for foreign languages and a passion for sharing and imparting knowledge about their country. Previous teaching experience is highly recommended because where appropriate and applicable, the volunteer will be treated as any other teacher at our school and we would expect the assistant to be prepared for the responsibility that goes with this. The school will provide a timetable for the volunteer, which will offer them the chance to use all of their skills, linguistically, artistically, socially and so on.
The volunteer would be involved in the areas of the curriculum that were relevant to their key skillsw. However, we would like to give the volunteer the opportunity to work as both a language assistant and as a guest teacher. The assistant will work in co-operation with the other teachers within the class and with small groups to help the students improve their skills, especially their spoken language. If the volunteer could contribute with musical or other creative activities as part of our extracurricular program that would be wonderful. Participation in sports or coaching experience would also be beneficial. Furthermore, a volunteer with skiing experience would be able to take part in our annual ski trip.
We would expect the volunteer to engage in all aspects of the school’s life. There will be plenty of opportunities to assist in the other daily tasks of a boarding school such as monitoring of cleaning and meal times, planning evening activities, helping with homework and so on. We also hope that the volunteer will offer skills or an area of expertise that we are lacking and we will do our best to accommodate this. For example, if the assistant were from a country, where we do not have their native language as a subject, we would like to offer our students the possibility to learn that language. Another example could be a particular sport that we do not currently offer our students.
Our school believes in offering our students the highest standards in language teaching. Besides this, we aim to offer our students every possible opportunity to learn about the EU, European culture and its people. We believe that a volunteer will aid our efforts to provide this opportunity for our students. We hope that they will provide first-hand knowledge of their country, culture and native language.
As part of the project the volunteer will be regarded as an ambassador for their nation and culture, as well as their language and therefore it is important that any volunteer has a sound knowledge of their own culture and country. Knowledge and an interest of current affairs and politics would further allow the volunteer to contribute and get involved in the school’s activities.
Finally, the volunteer should be hard-working and flexible. It is important to understand that the school is technically open 24/7 and work hours often reflect this with evening and occasional weekend duties. However, duties will never exceed the maximum working allowance and should the volunteer be asked to work weekends, time will be given in lieu.
