Resumo: The hosting organization is a marine education center which opened in 1997, created to combine research, public
Exhibition, aquariums, and education on marine issues. The town and their marine life are the common denominators for all the activities. The center is visited by aproximatly70.000 guests each year.
The harbour porpoises are the main focus of the research and are one of the main attractions. The harbor porpoise research aims to enhance knowledge of sensory systems and behaviour and to investigate methods of reducing bycatch. By having the porpoises at the organization we are also able to create awareness and educate the public about the harbour porpoise's plight in the wild. International research co-operation is currently carried out with institutions from many different countries.
The organization is located in one of the largest cities in Denmark (200.000 inhabitants) on the island, and has a population of approx. 8,000. It is two hours via public transportation from Copenhagen, the Danish capital.
Historically, the town is one of the last functioning fishing villages in Denmark and one of the larger tourist sites with its Old Danish architecture and attractive beaches.
The organization have approximately 15 full-time employees year round, not including the many interns and part-time staff. The Research department consists of a team composed of a Swedish department leader and three Danish trainers. Danish and foreign interns assist in all the daily tasks.
Since we have a lot of foreign interns we also make an effort to have a social life with them outside of work. Theese activities is payed by the individuel person.
We will try to get host families for the volunteers. The host family will provide food and housing for the volunteer without any payment. The reason for the host families is to give the volunteer a better chance to integrate in the danish community. When the volunteer lives in the private home of a host the rules of the house must be followed and respected.
Perfil: The volunteer must be at least 18 years of age due to the working and safety conditions of working at the ocean. It is therefor also important that the volunteer respects the rules of safety on the pontoons, which of course will be tought as the first thing and there will always be other people around when working on the pontoons. In corelation with this, it is also important that the volunteer is able to understand and speak english to a certaint extend.
The volunteer must be interested in all the aspects of working with marine mammals. Here I mean both the cleaning and the animal pars. It's always a good thing to have some previous experience in working with animals but not required.
It's important that the volunteer can work both individually and in a group.
Since we have guests and researchers visit our center, it is important that the volunteer is open to talk speak with them and answer what ever questions they might have and treat them with respect.
Sometimes unforeseen situations can occur, therefore it is important that the volunteer is flexible to changing working schedules and daily tasks.
Tarefas: Since we have so many interns coming to Fjord og bælt, we have an intern programme check of system we follow and this will be the situation for the volunteer too. In the beginning the intern will learn all the daily tasks that are nescesarry for the daily routines, such as fish sorting, kitchen cleaning, assisting the trainers and maintenance of the facilities. After an individual period of time the volunteer will start feeding the animals and start to learn how to do different behaviours with the animals. We have one person in charge of interns who will be responsible for the training of the volunteer and who will be the person to go to if problems of any kind.
Since we work with live animals unforeseen situations can occur and it is important that the volunteer is alright with routines or working tasks being changed and deal with unexpected situations.
Also we have a lot of different weather situations with both wind and water cnanges which can cause changes in the daily tasks and work routines.
The role of the intern will be to help with the daily flow in the fishkitchen and in time participate in the feedings/trainingsessions of our animals. In the season where the center is open it is also important to help in giving the guests a great experience which means answering questions and so on.
To be an intern at Fjord og bælt you will have the opportunity to learn about porpoises and seals. Both about their biology and how they live in nature. We do a lot of research especially with our porpoises and through this you will learn a lot about them as a species.
You will also have the opportunity to learn about their daily husbandry and care and also the basic rules of how to train animals.
There is also opportunities to learn about the animal life ans ecosystems of the danish waters.
