Resumo: The Deacon Association Betania was founded in November 1990 on the pattern and with an effective support of the Deacon establishment Bethanien Solingen (Germany) as a charity of the Church of Czech Brethren in Slovak Republic for the purpose of providing social services to citizens.
A brief history: On 28 January 1991 the Ministry of Interior registered the Deacon Association Betania as citizens association and by this act Betania officially started its activity that is based on the help to disabled, elderly, immobile, mentally and physically handicapped persons and those who need the nursing care, not taking into account the confession, status, race or politics. In November 22nd 1991, in the first step it succeeded to open a shelter for mentally handicapped citizens - House Betania Senec. Sheltered workshops were built successively and a system of regular education and employment of clients was established. It helped to their integration in the everyday life. November 23rd 1994 the Deacon Association Betania put into operation its second establishment located in the street. In 2003 the transformation of this establishment started and from January 2004 centre operates as a independent non-profit organisation.
At present the Deacon Association Betania remains an entity that maintains and builds contacts with domestic and foreign partners. One of the most important partners is the affiliate in Solingen, Germany. We develop mutual relations in the form of common training, exchange of volunteers and last but not least by the inspiring and sharing of experiences among the workers during regular reciprocal visits. Betania n.o. is located in one of the largest cities in Slovakia; it also serves as the state capital. It is situated in the centre of Europe in the south-western part of Slovakia. It borders with Hungary in the south and with Austria in the west. The town spreads like a fan on both banks of the Danube River and at the foot of the Low Carpathians. Due to its position on the border between the mild and warm climatic zones, it ranks among the warmest spots in Slovakia with an average temperature of 10° C. The city is the most populous city in the Slovak Republic and its population is 450 000 (Urban 550 000). A major industrial centre, the city is known for shipbuilding and the manufacture of furniture, chemicals, tobacco products, musical instruments, woollen goods and leather products. Points of interest include an 11th century Gothic cathedral that was restored in the second half of the 19th century, the ruins of the former royal palace of Hungary, on a hill overlooking the city, a 13th century Franciscan church, the town hall, the University, the Slovak Technical University, and the Slovak Academy.

The volunteer will be accommodated according our possibilities and the needs of the volunteer. We experienced living of the volunteer in the family and we also rent a room. The volunteer can choose if she/he wants to have meals with the host family or prepare food by herself/himself, for which she/he will receive a financial allowance - food money.
