Resumo: The Primary School is situated in the West. By tram you reach the city centre in 5 minutes. The project is based within the school building. The former working-class estate has changed into a mixture of different cultures, life styles and religions. There live many well-integrated foreigners, many young Academic families, many students and many artists. Therefore a lot of the children in the project come from a migrant background (Turkey, Greece, Italy, Albania, ..). For them it is interesting to meet a volunteer from their nationality, e.g Italian. The volunteer could offer specific games and cultural costums to all the kids.

The town has got a million inhabiants and is one of the biggest cities in Germany. It is situated in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germans region with the highest population. Belgium and the Netherlands can be reached in an hour by car. For it locates important industries it has been a magnet for workers from all over Europe, so it hosts people with many different cultural and national backgrounds. The town is a university city with more than 50,000 students. So it offers a wide range of cultural activities and alternative subcultures. The inhabitents are considered as open-minded and well-humored.

Perfil: We are open for hosting volunteers from all partners. For us it is important that the volunteers are interested in working with children. It would be good if they had practical or theoretical experiences in this range. The sending organisations with which we want to work together, should give us information about the need of support of the volunteers, so that we can decide if we are able to give this support in this period of time.
Please note that a basic knowledge of German is necessary
Age: 18 until 30 years old

Tarefas: 1. Volunteers can work in all fields of the after school clubs. There they can learn how to work educational with kids, anger management and therefore to be consistent and forceful.
They get to know the children, intercultural background and will have no problems to be empathetic about this matter, because of their own.

They will learn how to teach learning contents and topics, how to work in a team and day-to-day social work competence. They’ll get to know the work in team, team meetings, planning and organizing of daytrips and others specific offers. Thereby they get to know what they are good at and what they like doing.
Through all these activities and the new experiences they will become more self-confident. They will always get a feedback, both from the team and from the kids. The volunteers get to know the German school system and by eating their lunch in the school they also get to know a bit of the German food-culture.
It’s also our target, that the volunteers learn more about different ways of life in general and the different circumstances of the lives of the children and families. They will see the how families are (and maybe how different they are, to what they are used to) by learning from the children. They also learn who to live and work with children and co-workers. They learn how to develop own projects and how to inspire others and motivate them to participate.
Last but not least they learn German, too. We always have other volunteers from different countries in our other projects at the same time, because of their contact our volunteers learn about other cultures and different working fields as well.

2. The volunteers are additional workers at their workplace/institution. They assist the workers due to their (the volunteers) abilities. For the kids they are extra people to speak to and to play with. The children will be curious about the volunteers and will ask them to play with them. The volunteers are not alone on their project they don’t have take great responsibility.

The volunteers will be an equal member of the staff, but won’t carry full responsibility and will be able to work due to their own abilities. They will have a tutor, who will help her together with the other employees with any problems and difficulties.

The cultural backgrounds of the volunteers can also work as a mediator-role if i.e. coworkers talk the kids or their parents. They can also bring in cultural-specific topics, for example by doing a workshop about their country.
They should bring their cultural background and their enthusiasm into the team. At the same time they should show the kids a European perspective and make positive intercultural encounter possible.

3. The volunteers get to know all the different projects and work fields of the after-school-clubs and can help here due to their abilities that include: homework assistance, playtime, sport-and leisure offers, meal preparation (the food will be delivered), projects and workshops. They can take part in a project and bring in their ideas (practical or/and theoretical). The volunteers have the opportunity to find and develop new strengths and abilities i.e. their own creativity. They can realize projects and will get help to do so.
