Resumo: The city is the of the largest cities in Norway, situated at the south-west coast. There are 120 000 inhabitants in the municipality, and included the neighbouring towns and villages the region has an urban population that counts 300 000. The region is Norways third largest urban area.

Key profile of the region: Oil business, high standard of living, university and airport with flights to a number of destinations. Culture is as an expanding sector with a lot of festivals and events. The city and its suburbs are close to nature and wilderness - with beautiful mountains and beaches - perfect for e.g. windsurfing, fishing, biking and mountain walks, etc.

The city is both blessed and cursed by the warmth of the Gulf Stream. This phenomena provides both warmth, in the form of mild winters, and wet spells. Temperatures are fairly stable, varying between 0-15 degrees Celsius. The warmest months are usually July and August, but May and June can also be warm and sunny with much higher temperatures. Spring comes early to to the city April and May are beautiful months with strong sun and dry spells. This fits well with the celebration of Norways "Constitution Day" on the 17th of May. Easter vacation, which usually falls in late March or April is spent by many in the mountains – skiing. There is plenty of snow in the mountains and spring feeling near the coast. The summer climate can vary from year to year, from being rather gray and wet to hot, sunny spells that lasts for weeks. Some of the most spectacular beaches in Norway can be found in the area. Autumn can often be windy and wet. But again this changes from year to year. Leftovers from tropical hurricanes often hit the west coast of Norway with winds up to hurricane force. Winters in the city are not typical for what one would think of in Norway. They are usually mild and wet. The average temperatures for January and February are just above freezing. Snow does occur however. The first snow might fall as early as November, but it seldom lasts long. The weather in the city often changes rapidly during a day, and there is a saying which is truth; we often have all four seasons in one day!
• The project environment is located in different geographical areas and public youth arenas in the city:
a) Bekkefaret, Tasta and Hundvåg bydelshus/youthclubs
b) Metropolis ungdomskulturhus
c)Frivilligsentralene
a) Bekkefaret, Tasta and Hundvåg bydelshus are three different community- and leisure centres/youthclubs consisting of a wide range of activities, courses and measures. Even though they are situated in different parts of the city, they still serve the same purpose. They are mainly targeting youth at the age of 13 – 16. There are a large number of people, organisations, etc. who frequently use the centres. Their main focus is performance and expressions related to music and art. This is, however, a wide category, and includes events and projects as workshops in photography, painting, fashion and music, short-movie production, concerts and annual events. There are daily activities within music and film. These activities lead to spin offs within photo, graphic design, exhibitions, concerts, shows, events, etc. Youth participation in developing ideas and projects are integrated in the daily activities. The centres are located in spacious buildings in different district houses situated a few kilometres outside the city center. Some shops, skating installation, kindergardens, churches and schools are the closest neighbours. The centres also serve as an informal meeting spot for young people in the community, and have a close cooperation with the lower secondary school located in their district, and with NGOs in the community.
The staff consists of 6 full time employed culture- and youth workers, and approx. 4-6 part time/project workers. Per center have a high profile as non-alcohol and drugfree youth scenes.
b) Metropolis ungdomskulturhus is a youthculture centre consisting of an internet café, several high quality/well equipped scenes, studios and space for cultureprojects, job service, youth information spot, courses and workshops. The main focus in Metropolis is performance and expressions related to music, art and media. The centre has a brilliant location in a former police station in the heart of the city. Living conditions in the neigbourhood are the most poor in the city.

Every afternoon, almost throughout the year, there are a number of culture activities, actions and projects going on, mainly initiated by the young people themselves, coached by fulltime and parttime employed youthworkers and facilitators. The profile of the activities are concerts and music related workshops/events/festivals, media; film and radio production, graphic design; flyers/posters/CD-covers, meetingpoint/space for dance groups and bands, and different kinds of activities run by NGOs. The centre is also an informal meeting spot with an internetcafe offering delicious, cheap meals. Targetgroup: all young people at age 16 – 25, with a special focus on 16 – 20, and youth at risk. Metropolis is also highly profiled as a non-alchol and drugfree youth culture centre.
c) Frivilligsentralene (The Volunteer Centers) are situated in three different parts of the city, all of them within a range of 7 km from city center. Each Center has a general Manager who is in charge of the daily operations and the volunteers connected to the Center. The city is, as mentioned, the Oil Capital of Norway and we have a rich population. This makes the contrasts between rich and poor even bigger, and the need for activities that equalize social inequality are therefor important. Activities that promote a healthy way of living are of great interest to the Volunteer Centers. Frivilligsentralene's main focus is coordinating local voluntary work, encourage volunteering, create meeting places and having an open and inclusive approach to people. They emphasize interdiciplinary collaboration with NGO's, different associations and clubs, and also local government. Even though Frivilligsentralene are run differently, they all initiate various activities for different people in different situations of life and ages. To name a few; meetingplaces for foreigners who want to practice the Norwegian language, activity days across generations, computer courses for women from minority groups, day-to-day help for people in need of an extra hand etc. These activities are often initiated by the volunteers themselves. To sum up; The Volunteer Centers will meet the needs that arise from people in the various districts of the city and are concerned with healthrelated avtivities for both young and old people.

• We offer a live-in community. Independent of type of housing, please note the following basic guidelines: We expect the volunteers to respect our law, values and guidelines concerning drugs and alcohol: 1. No tolerance for any use of drugs, which means that we expect employees and volunteers to promote a healthy lifestyle. 2. No tolerance for alcohol served/used by people below the age of 18, nor participation in any social setting with youngsters if alcohol and/or drugs are present. 3. We appreciate if you are a non-smoker. No employees or volunteers are allowed to smoke in contexts with young persons.

• Service and learning opportunities: We offer learning opportunities and challenges within the broad field of youthwork, community work and health promoting activities. The core of the learning possibilities are: - Learning how non-formal and formal learning systems can benefit from cooperation (by taking part in activities both in a school context and a leisuretime context.) - Learning teamwork and intercultural learning (by taking part in organising local and international youth activities.) - Learning and approving skills in culture based activities: arranging concerts/events and other cultural activities (dependant on the volunteers skills/interests and the profile of the culture activities and facilities in the respective centre.) – Learning the importance of voluntary work in a diverse society with challenges related to lifestyle deseases and social inequality.
According to service: We offer a language course, appropriate housing (preferably a shared apartment with another volunteer, but a live-in situation in a family or a live-in situation in a house for young people - run by the organization will also be considered). The volunteers will be offered to participate in relevant events in our organisation, and have the possibility to join sportsactivities similar to activities offered to employees. Invitations to occasional social events, e.g. dinners, parties and excursions with people working in our organisation will be offered. The volunteers will be offered two free hot meals per week at Josefines Café and a swimming card wich gives them free access to the city's swimming facilities. It will also be possible to have cheap meals in Metropolis ungdomskulturhus.

Perfil: We are seeking openminded and highly motivated volunteers, preferably with some experience/skills in intercultural learning processes and/or youth exchanges. Some experience from youth leadership/youth work or socialwork, will be preferable. The volunteers ought to have interest and/or competence within youth culture activities; music, media, film, dance, sports/outdoor activities. To see the importance of working with people in different life situations and ages, are important. The working language is English and Norwegian. The learning opportunities and challenges we can offer demand independancy and ability to adapt into teamwork processes. Persons who are attracted of getting experience/practice within a wide specter of approaches in the field of youth, non-formal education and social work, should consider to apply for this EVS project.
age: 18 until 30 years old

Tarefas: - To promote intercultural learning is a basic role for the volunteers. Our attitude is that intercultural learning is important on different levels in the organisation and the society in general, and the volunteers will play a key role in this matter. - The volunteer will be integrated as an equal teammember in the staff were he/she is located. This means that the volunteer will have one permanent and basic team from the start to the end of the project. The volunteer will further on work with a number of relevant teams and employees across the organisation, and also in close partnership with the other volunteers. This structure will give the volunteer a role as both an "idea-entrepreneur" and a role where he/she follows up different culture activities and actions run by the basic team. Supervision concerning the different roles will be secured.
• Examples of activities: The volunteers are expected both to adapt to on-going activities and create new activities at the centres. When it comes to describing practical work tasks and activities for the volunteers, basic keywords are: 1) Development 2) Facilitation, 3) Organising various cultural youth activities and 4) social work. 1) Development: We are constantly developing new projects, evaluating and approving ongoing activities. The volunteer will get to plan and create new events, and to take ongoing projects further. 2) Facilitation: There is a constant need to facilitate the different activities at the centres, making sure that equipment for each activity, workshop and event are up to date and present. 3) Organising: Organising events and activities involves both work and time. Key words describing some relevant tasks are: - PR; production and distribution of posters, flyers, advertisement, etc. – Recruitment; reaching out to those who might be interested in the activities, using tactical recruitment in some areas. – Building workgroups prior to the events and coaching them towards deadline. – Budgeting and charting costs and equipment. 4) Social work: Working with people in general from the age of zero to old age.
