Volunteers will be guided by the responsible of the oganization and have proper mentoring from founding members of the oganization
.
Luxemburg has a University since 7 years only and so no real tradition in student activities or student groups; those which exist at the 3 campuses are mainly focused on fun&beer and the umbrella organization covering also all organizations from Luxemburg students abroad is mainly focused on orientation of high school pupils and preparing professional life once the studies are finished.
The oganizationis actually an observing member of LUS (Luxemburg University Student association) trying to push for action&reflection.
Sometimes foreign students complain because Luxemburgish students will speak in their mother tongue and so they feel a bit excluded.
As for the studying languages, the Uni-LU is a Multilanguage one, using mainly English and French, for some subjects also German language. That's why many foreign students need at the beginning language support, formal and informal.
As not all students have a lot of money, and as in Luxemburg life is rather expensive, the oganization tries to offer alternatives, as f. ex. showing movies at the oganization, asking volunteers to give SALSA courses, organizing travels abroad through our international network of similar associations or communities.
The local community where the project will take place:
The environment will be mainly the one of foreign students in Luxemburg on one hand and as the oganization is located at centre Convict, the different associations hosted at the same address on the other hand.
The 3 campuses are situated in Luxemburg and Walferdange; the residences are in Luxemburg and Esch.
As their home is situated in Mersch, at 10 minutes train to campus Walfer and 15 minutes train to Luxemburg city, they have easy access to all public transport through the whole country.
So it's the student world which will be the world of the volunteers.
Lodging conditions:
Volunteers will live in a common residence with 4 students in Mersch, a little town in center of Luxemburg-country.
The rules are:
- to share cleaning of the house according to a plan established in common
- to participate to monthly community meetings
- to do once a semester a common volunteering action
- to respect other residents needs
Every house has a supervisor, inadition to the personal supervisor and tutor of the volunteers, who are Luxemburg residents and who have long experience in social /psychological field
Perfil: Offer to volunteers in terms of Service and learning opportunities,
the oganization can offer :
-an open space for European volunteers, to develop their ideas into concrete proposals for students, including support for studies, and in addition raise consciousness within Luxembourg society for students' reality, including lobbying activities
-a multi-cultural-national-religious reality: around 70 students with different background regarding origin (15 nationalities and 3 continents) and religion (Christian, Muslim, Hindi) form the actual the oganization student community; this gives a unique opportunity to listen to discrimination experiences, to mediate in conflict situations, to be intermediary, to speak out for the weakest, to study antidiscrimination law. As one third is non EU nationals, living legally in Luxembourg as students, it is an opportunity to get aware of EU-law regarding third country nationals/students and confronting it to national law.
-orientation for volunteers to promote students' awareness about human rights concerns and social exclusions in Luxemburg by putting them in contact with local relevant NGOs .
-guidance for volunteers in realizing activities with students in favour of marginalized groups in Luxembourg city (Sunday morning breakfast for homeless; street work at the main station to be present to young drug addicted; visits to refugees in Foyer St Antoine)
- a protected surrounding to explore own creativity, competences and limits
- language skills: informal opportunities to learn and to practice English, French, Luxemburgish and German; according to their wishes, the volunteer can participate to formal training in English, French, German and luxemburgish
-team building capacities: Coming from 2 entirely different backgrounds, building one team with the oganization members will be the first learning field of the volunteers.
The role of EVS volunteers in the Host Organisation:
In general, the role of the volunteers will be on one hand to create new opportunities for students to meet and to find new responses to their needs and on the other hand to help in promoting existing offers.
In particular and according to competences and interests of the volunteers, their role is to widen the proposed activities of the oganization and to promote greater understanding for cultural and religious differences amongst students and young people in general.
The activities in which the volunteers could be involved and the activities the volunteers could create in our organisation:
The project gives opportunity to the volunteers to promote own creativity, develop tolerance and non violent attitude, learn good communication skills in a multi-cultural and multi-religious surrounding in Luxemburg in general and at the oganization in particular.
Concretly this means, volunteers can
- Bring a critical view on existing initiatives and on Luxembourg society regarding student life,
- Participate to community experiences as Friday evening encounters
- Help in finding jobs and linking to networks of job opportunities for students and young people in general
- Support students in animating and publishing a small newsletter
- Make student life public through different media and awareness actions
- Link to existing student residences or services and organize common activities
- Monitor discrimination situations of foreign students
- Promote cultural, sports and other leisure activities
- organize informal language trainings
age: 18 until 30 year old
Tarefas: Volunteers who want to discover different nationalities, cultures and religions are attracted by the variety of the oganization´s clients. Their interest to practice english and french will be matched because both languages are the oganization's main communication tools. Those who want to be creative and develop own projects find a proper place in the oganization for indoor and outdoor initiatives, in Luxemburg and abroad.
The oganization expects from volunteers to feel at home in the academic world and to like discussions, without being afraid to confront opposite ideas. That's why the minimum age of volunteers should be 21 years.
According to the oganization´s aims, the volunteer will be less desoriented if he or she is eager to learn from african culture, oriental traditions, christian values and is open to the spiritual dimension.
As the communication language of the oganization's student community is french and english, it is good for the volunteer to know at least own of these 2 languages and to be ready to learn the other one
The oganization's aim is to promote its activities through volunteering, including EVS; also we foster active participation of students themselves.
Recruitment process:
The matchmaking procedure starts normally with an email from a candidate or a sending organization (SO) presenting a candidate; here the description how we proceed
1. do required dates fit to our timetable (15 September to 15 July)
2. does the volunteer know a language in which we can communicate
3. questions about tolerance, interest for students own creativity and how EVS integrates in own life project.
4. Once these questions are clarified and in case the volunteer did not mention it yet, the oganization asks about SO, contacts SO to know expectations toward HS and appreciation of volunteer
5. If the oganization has the choice, it gives preference to a male/female and EU/nonEU couple.
6. if too many candidates remain, a last question about do you have other EVS opportunities helps for a final choice, giving preference to those who have no other option.
Information will happen through the common data basis of the eurodesk and through contacts to the national agencies of EVS with which we had contacts in the last 3 years.
The oganization is not afraid of welcoming volunteers from non-EU-countries and applying for visa and stay permit
As we gather students from all over the world, in the oganization no one feels excluded because of language barriers, conditions related to the origin or social class , because we are all different.
If needed we can find aditional funding in case a volunteer comes from a deprived economical situation.
Former volunteers play an active role in identifying eventual candidates and help answering questions to applicants
As we foresee 2 volunteers, the selection process will try to form a culturally balanced couple
Sending Organisations we want to cooperate with:
As University students are our target group, it's easier to cooperate with sending organizations which are also in contact with students or young persons who have student experience. As all is about good communication, it's important that the professionals of the sending organisation can communicate with us in at least one common language. The oganization is open to realize common projects in the framework of its aims, defined by the statutes, its financial possibilities and students active participation.
Also we are not interested in short-term volunteering but ask a minimum of 9 months volunteering.
