Resumo: The social cooperative is located in about 60 km far from Rimini and the Adriatic coast and about 60 km far from Bologna.
The city is also near to famous art cities such as Florence, Ferrara and Venice and it is well connected by the railway service with the rest of Italy and by its international airport with Europe.
The city is the chief town of the province of the city and it is very lively from an economic and cultural perspective. Local economy is based on the service sector, small industries and on the agricultural sector. The city is also a venue of the
prestigious University of Bologna; in particular, the presence of the Modern School for Interpreters and Translators and of the faculty of International and Diplomatic Sciences has contributed to the creation of a young environment which has stimulated the cultural life of the city in terms of theatres, cinemas, parties, etc. and which is undoubtedly a positive aspect for the integration of International volunteers in the local community also thanks to the present of many foreign students arrived in town with other European programmes. Moreover, due to the presence of other ethnic groups came into town mainly for working reasons, the local population is beginning to develop an awareness of the European and international dimension of the city and of the necessity to manage different cultural realities.
We would like to host volunteers in each one of the different centres managed by the cooperative, which are all located in the city and quite near to each other. Volunteers will take actively part both in the educational and recreational activities and in general in the daily activities of the centres. In particular, projects are divided in two typologies depending on the users:
1) Daily Centre for children/adolescents:
Educational centres: there are two centres which host 70 children and adolescents form 6 to 15 years of age, some with fewer opportunities, and aim at promoting a better quality of life for young people and their families, at preventing youth problems and sustaining the parents. The activities of the centres are mainly the following:
a) Tutoring: the staff organize small study groups in which young people do their homeworks, search additional information and are helped with eventual learning difficulties. The educators usually create the right situation for the learning activities through a context of signifying relationships between children/adolescents of the same age.
b) Workshops and Atelier: the workshops are places in which young people “learn by doing” and “do in order to learn”. There are different types of workshops from corporal expression to the creation of objects, from reading and writing to music and art.
2) Houses for children/adolescents:
Live-in communities: they represent a protected environment for 20 children and adolescents that ensure a family-like climate, indispensable for the growth of young people with fewer opportunities. In these centres, the professional staff together with a “normal” family offer a point of reference by sharing with the users all aspects of their daily life. The staff of the houses is composed of 8 qualified educators and some volunteers.
Young people are involved in the activities related to the management of the house (tyding up of bedrooms and kitchen, little maintenance works, etc.) according to their age, free time and skills, always supported by the staff. Every week there is a meeting between the educators and the young hosts in order to talk about the experience lived daily in the house, to discuss the relationships within it and to plan together some aspects of the common life: activities, going-outs, shopping. During the week-end, different activities are organized, possibly outside the house, such as trips to the seaside or to the near hills; horse-riding or skating; cinema, bowling, football matches and parties. The young people who live in the houses are encouraged to organize autonomous activities and going-out with friends always depending on their age and personal behaviour and the previous permission given by the educators.
In the different centres, the ‘family-like climate’ - necessary condition to foster the growth of young people - is created within the community thanks to the presence of “qualified” adults, in the role of educators, who share daily life and activities with children and adolescents thus offering them a secure point of reference. Groups of educators exchange duties during the day thus ensuring their presence in the different moments of young people’s life. There are also times of the day in which all the staff is present as these moments are more enaging or particularly delicate; moreover, specific rules – listed below – has been established for everybody thus applying also for the EVS volunteers.
• Respect for the people in the house;
• Respect for the house and its objects;
• Respect for any religious belief;
• Typical day: during school period the day is divided according to the following timetable:
Morning: youth wake up, have breakfast, tidy up their room and go to school (with a social worker or on their own).
Afternoon: lunch time (all together if possible); tidying up of the kitchen according to established duties;
15 o’ clock – youth do homework with social workers;
after finishing homework there’s a break and then recreational and sports activities begin (once per week youth are asked to clean and tidy up their wardrobe, desk and dresser);
at the end of the afternoon youth are asked to put their clean clothes in the right places (management of the laundry is assigned to an adult);
Evening: dinner time (all together); tidying up of the kitchen according to established duties;
youth are asked to take care of their personal hygiene and then they plan the evening with social workers (social games, movie show, other activities);
The resting/sleeping time is agreed with the social workers;
During the weekend and when schools are closed the timetable can vary a lot as different activities are organized, often outside the live-in community;
On a weekly basis the social workers organize a meeting with all the youth in order to agree the rules of the house, to talk about the daily experiences, to discuss about relationships between people and plan some aspect of the life in common;
• The meals are prepared together and youth are asked to have an adequate behaviour and show respect for others and for food;
• Youth are not allowed to answer the telephone or the entry phone without permission from a social worker,
• The use of telephone, mobile phones, computers, videogames and television is regulated and agreed with the social workers according to the rules established during the weekly meeting;
• Listening to music is allowed but always respecting the other inhabitants of the house (volume and hours);
• Inviting other people in the house and going out alone are to be agreed with the social workers (places, times, company);
• Visits and meetings with relatives are regulated by the Social Service;
• Smoking is not permitted within the house and in the garden (adults and youth);
• Before entering the social workers’ room, youth have to knock and wait for permission;
• The assignment of the rooms is made by the social workers;
• Before entering other people’s room, youth have to ask for permission to a social worker and to the person sleeping in that room;
• Social workers do not agree with and discourage the lending of money and objects between youth;
• It is forbidden to take food from the fridge and the store cupboard without permission;
• It is allowed to eat only in the kitchen and in the dining room
• It is not allowed to eat, to smoke and to throw rubbish in the car or in the van. The radio is kept to a moderate volume and traffic code is always respected;
• Bedrooms and bathrooms have no keys;
• In the house prayers are said before meals and on Sunday everybody goes to the church;
• It is possible to take one’s bike in the house: to protect it from thieves a padlock should be used and the bike must be put in the provided spaces. Ordinary maintenance will be paid by the house, however damages caused by improper use will be paid by the youth;
• Purchase of new clothes or objects of any kind must be agreed with the social workers;
• Within the house friendship is encouraged between youth but not love affairs as they can create difficulties in the management of the relationships and cause a discharge;
• Each youth has a weekly “pocket money” that can be used in agreement with a social worker.
Perfil: The volunteers we would like to host may be of both sexes but, given the age of the young people hosted in our structures, it would be better if they are 18 years old (in particular, in the “Comunità Educative”, where people may be even 18-19 years old, volunteers should be older than 20). The volunteers will be recruited through direct contact with the sending organizations with which the Consorzio has cooperated in the past or with which it will establish new partnerships; it’s important for the selection that the volunteer satisfies the following requirements:
• to be a good listener;
• to be sensitive to the approach with children and adolescents, in an educative perspective;
• to have some artistic ability that can be shared, because as said above, the volunteer will have the possibiliy to implement his own activities.
Depending on the circumstances we may ask the volunteer a medical certificate or a penal certificate to prevent any problem due to the contact with children and adolescents in our centres.
Given the particular situation of the centres, where in general the young people cared for have economical, social and cultural problems in general, an ideal volunteer should be someone mature, responsible and tollerant.
Age: 18 until 30 years old
Tarefas: Each centre will host one volunteer and they will be mainly involved into ricreational and leisure activities but also in supporting the adolescents in their studies (according to competences). Since the centres open in the afternoon, the volunteers’ service will take place in this part of the day except in particular occasions in which activities are organized also during the week-end.
Here is an example of a typical day in the centre:
13:30 lunch (with the children who requested it)
14.30 host ceremony (greetings and presentation)
14.45 assembly
15.00 studying activities
16.45 break
17.00 workshop activities, games, sport, etc.
18.30 closure
Tasks of the volunteers in the Comunità educative:
Each community will host one volunteer and their tasks will be mainly linked to ricreational and leisure moments but also to assist young people doing their homeworks. Volunteers will also support the educators during transport to their sports activities; moreover, they will help in the tyding up of the houses as it is one of the educative tasks of the adolescents hosted.
Here is an example of a typical day in the centre:
ORE 7: wake up, breakfast and preparation to go to school
ORE 7,45: transports (mini van, bus or bycicle for those whose school is near).
ORE 8,30 - 13: tyding up and planning of the afternoon.
ORE 13,30: lunch.
ORE 14,30: free time and tyding up of the kitchen according to established duties
ORE 15: study and homeworks. In this part of the day, the adolescents are guided by an educator and a volunteer who encourage and support them in the realization of the school work. When extra effort is needed, individual lessons are organized to help the adolescents
ORE 17,30: sport and leisure activities.
ORE 19: dinner and organization of the evening activities.
ORE 20,30: board and table games, watching movies, telling stories or episodes, going out, etc.
ORE 21,30/22,30: moments of revision and sleep.
This timetable may vary during summer and other holiday periods.
The activities of the volunteer will cross over all the activities of the organisation, but mainly, they will concern the kids: first because when you do not know the language, it is easier to communicate with children, then because one of the goal of the presence of the volunteer in our organisation is open up the mind of the kids to Europe and to its differences.
The program of the activities of the volunteer will be very clear. Anyway the more s/he will want to do something on her/his own, the more s/he will be able to do so.
