Resumo: The organization is responsible for the preservation, protection and management of the protected area of Mountain and Wetland. It was founded in 2002 and was established in 2003. It is managed by a management board with 11 members that are designated by ministerial decision and is composed of members who represent ministries, local government, local institutions and environmental organisations.

The protected area of the organization was famous, from "the old times", for its extensive forests. Naturally, the long-term human presence has significantly altered the original character of the region, but the vegetation, the types of habitats and flora maintain even today, a high ecological value.

For more information about the history, mythology as well as the social environment of the protected area visit the management body's web site.

In the region there are more than 15 types of habitat. Some of them are unique or particularly noteworthy nationally and internationally, such as extensive woodlands nigra, forests with Juniperus drupaceae in the Malevi monastery region, the chestnut tree groves in Kastanitsa, the coastal organization, south, etc.

The most important areas are considered to be: a) wetland areas and areas with Juniperus drupacea (dense clusters and shrub meadows) b) areas identified as significant for the flora, which is exclusively shrub meadows and c) the peaks which apart from shrub meadows include a small plateau of grasslands.

All three wetlands have been formed by the torrents of Tanos and Vrasiatis as well as the groundwater activity (karst springs). The torrents carry large amounts of sediment due to the steep eastern slopes of the town. The three existing wetlands are the remains of the once large delta which was created by the deposit of sediment by the torrents. The wetland receives freshwater from a spring and seawater from the channel. The area hosts certain protected species of waterfowl and passerine birds but its importance lies in the wintering and migration of bird species. The area is also important for otters, a species recently recorded that consists of an isolated but viable population. The golden jackal, a species threatened with extinction in Greece, is also found in the area of the city and the surrounding valleys. Juniperus drupaceae is an Asian species uniquely distributed in Europe but found particularly on the northern slopes. Due to its rarity all distribution areas are protected.

The ravine of Elona, includes areas of high importance for local endemic species of flora (four different species grow there) and many species of rare chasmophytes.
The most important element of the protected area is the rare and local endemic flora, which must be preserved and protected by the Management Body.
