Resumo: Armenia (Republic of Armenia) is located in southern Transcaucasia, the region southwest of Russia between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Armenia is bordered on the north by Georgia, on the east by Azerbaijan, on the southwest by the Nakhchivan, Republic of Azerbaijan, on the south by Iran, and on the west by Turkey.
Armenia is the first nation which officially adopted Christianity in 301 AD. Armenia has its own church, the Armenian Apostolic Church, which most Armenians follow. Christianity has a strong influence in the country, but there is a small presence of other religions too. The population in Armenia is almost 3 million, and half of it is in the city.
The city, where the volunteers will live, is located in the centre-west of the country in the north-eastern extremity of the Ararat Valley. The upper part of the city is surrounded with mountains on three sides while it descends to the banks of the river Hrazdan at the south. The city is the largest economical center of the Republic. Manufacturing is the main, principal trend of multi-branch industry. The main trends of industry are manufacture of food products, including alcoholic beverages and chemical and metallurgy industry.
Tourism in Armenia is developing year by year and the city is one of the major tourist destinations. The city has modern restaurants, bars, pubs, nightclubs, museums, galleries, theatres, parks, and other nice and interesting places to see and visit during volunteers' free time. Transportation in Armenia and in the city is quite well developed with buses and mini-buses leaving to different regions of Armenia and various parts of the city on daily bases. People in here are very hospitable and they are always glad and open to foreigners.
Although the official language is Armenian, but most people in the city and other regions are also fluent in Russian. Most young people are able to speak well English in the city, as it is well taught in schools. More than 90% of the students study in the capital, giving the city an image of a place designed for young people. The cityis a very safe city. One can walk in almost all parts of the city even at night without being afraid that one can be attacked or harmed.
The other city where the volunteer will also stay is Gyumri. It is the second largest city and one of the oldest localities in Armenia. Gyumri is located in the Western part of the country with a population of about 170 000. The city is situated on a 126 km distance north to the city in the central part of the Shirak Highland, at an approximate height of 1550 meters above sea level.
It has a rich history and unique style of architecture, but unfortunately it lost many of its historical and cultural buildings after the disastrous 1988 earthquake. During the centuries Gyumri, the "city of trades and arts", has been famous for its museums, theatres, gusans (troubadours), writers, actors and actresses. The first Armenian opera theatre was also opened here in 1923. Gyumri has a major contribution in the sports life of Armenia. Many Olympic and world champion wrestlers, weightlifters and boxers are from Gyumri.
The economy of Gyumri mostly depends on construction sector, tourism and banking services. Industry has a big share in the domestic product. The most important industrial activities are the production of building materials, yarn and textile manufacturing and food industries. Gyumri is home to Shirak "Gyumri" Beer Company.
As from the touristic point of view, Gyumri is a very folkloric place. It gives the chance to discover the real Armenia, its culture, the human values of ordinary people living with The direct community the volunteers will be mainly in touch with is the hosting organisation, the youth attending its EspaceS center daily and its numerous partner organisations that are quite active in NGO sector both on national and international levels.

Tarefas: We plan to have volunteers, who will be involved in the activities of the two centres (one in the capital, the city and in the second city, Gyumri) of the organisation. Both volunteers will mainly have the same activities and tasks to accomplish and mainly the same learning opportunities. There are few differences is the nature of activities. In the city alongside with language and culture clubs, and various trainings and cultural activities, much attention is given in supporting young people and giving them necessary tools for personal and professional development for them to find their place on the job market and in the society in general. In other city the language classes and language speaking clubs has just recently started developing while there is a special atelier - videquipage which is very specific. The other city centre is a little bit more social care oriented due to specifics of other city. In general consideration is given to local realities, needs and interests of young people in the city and other city.
During the first phase of the project both volunteers will have time to get to know the local community, host organisation, its collaborators, members and volunteers. Then they will receive an extensive training in the hosting organization. Both volunteers, with support of the hosting organization will be involved in projects that have several dimensions. They are already being implemented and we see volunteers as assistants in the following:
A. Thematic months - The academic year is broken into 11 different thematic months (let's say "Month of Intercultural Communication", "Month of Cultural Tolerance", "Month of Francophone", etc.). During these months sets of different thematic activities (exhibitions, action days, movie screenings, round tables) are organized for and by young people. The volunteer will work together with the coordinator of the project and other staff members to identify the most topics that are of a high interest and concern for young people. The volunteer will then design the appropriate activities through which the topic can be presented in the most interesting and appealing way in order to create a space for young people to reflect upon the given topic and freely express their opinions.
B. Language and Culture Clubs - There are English, French, Italian and Spanish language Clubs where young people gather to socialize and improve their speaking skills in English, French, Italian or Spanish. Those clubs are run by young people and they are the ones who decide their monthly topics to be discussed as well as activities to be made. Young people involved in these clubs are especially interested in communicating with foreign young people as this a good chance for them to improve their language skills as well as get to know about other points of view than their own ones. The volunteer's task will be helping facilitate these clubs and bringing in his/her intercultural dimension. In case the volunteer speaks any of these languages and feels comfortable with teaching, s/he could also provide some language animations.
C. CineGlobe - CineGlobe is a film club which is helping young people to discover the world of cinema and the world behind it as well. Together with the coordinator of the club young people are choosing the films and building the discussions afterwards. The Club offers different types of films but the main goal of it is to promote cultural diversity thus screening films from and about different cultures and times. The volunteer will also be involved in this activity where s/he will participate in choosing process of the films, preparation of informative announcements on the screening and helping to lead the discussion after the movie.
D. Valorisation of Library - Our organisation possesses a quite rich library (third French Library in Armenia) which is right now in need of creative valorisation. The volunteer (mainly French speaking) together with staff member will try to think of ways of making this library first known and second interesting for young people.
Besides the above mentioned activities the volunteers may write some articles for the organization's website on the activities where they had active participation, participate in the campaign of promoting the concept of EVS and disseminating information about the 'Youth in Action' Programme in different institutions and NGOs, assist in writing projects and further implementing them. With the all necessary help of staff the volunteers are free as well to initiate their own project(s).
During the service in the Foundation, the volunteers will enrich their sense of intercultural awareness; will learn to prepare, implement, and evaluate youth projects (mainly themed to intercultural communication, development of civil society and concept of volunteering); will learn to organize conferences, exhibitions, run discussions and round tables, working in a team, etc. The volunteers will also get language courses either Armenian or Russian.
The volunteers will work 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, and will have vacations 2 days a month. They can take their vacations whenever they want having deliberately agreed with the organisation. They will work from 10:00 to 19:00 (including lunch break of 2 hours) in the office (meeting with the coordinator, mentor, and language teacher is also included in the working hours).
