Resumo: The project is located in a seaside town situated on the southern shore. The town has a population of about 70,000 people and has an attractive town centre with a harbour, marina and good shops. By Northern Ireland standards this town is an affluent town compared to many other areas. There are many deprived areas in Northern Ireland, which still show signs of the conflict, but to a large extent the town shows very little evidence of depravation or the conflict and not at all in the town centre, where the volunteers live. The town is about 12 miles from Belfast which is Northern Ireland’s capital city and there are good bus and rail links to Belfast. The volunteer accommodation is in the town centre; a couple of minutes walk from the shops and other amenities. The town has a good leisure centre and many sports facilities for sports such as tennis, rugby, football and athletics.

The organization has extensive premises about three miles from the town centre including offices, training facilities, residential accommodation and a four acre walled garden used for growing trees. As a little inaccessible for somebody without their own transport, the organization collects volunteers from the town in a minibus each morning and return them at the end of the day.

The organization works with many communities, schools groups and landowners across Northern Ireland. A number of the projects based at Northern Ireland-wide and often involve work at other locations.

For example during the winter we run many tree planting events with schools. This work will involve travelling to other locations. For this organization staff will drive the EVS volunteers to the relevant location in one of organization’s vehicles.

The organization has a house in the town where up to four EVS volunteers live. The house is in a terraced street a few minutes, walk from the town centre with shops and many other amenities and within sight of the Park which has extensive open space and sports facilities. The house has a kitchen, living room, two bathrooms and five bedrooms. Each volunteer has their own room (with lockable door) and the use of the other shared facilities. The organization pays all costs associated with the house including rent, electricity and heating with this cost largely met from the payments received for “host activity costs” for the EVS volunteers.

The volunteers will be given a weekly allowance to buy food.

They have the use of the kitchen in the accommodation outlined above. Generally the volunteers living at this accommodation cook meals together and share the cooking and cleaning. The house has a phone which is set to receive incoming calls only and the organization also pays for the cost of this service. The house also has internet access for volunteers who bring their own computer and many do. Volunteers without their own computer are allowed to use one of the computers in our office for internet access.

Volunteers are given written rules for the use of the house and are asked to sign an agreement that they understand and will abide by the rules.

The rules include:
•Fire safety and location of fire extinguishers.
•No smoking policy.
•Cleaning.
•Disposal of waste.
•No parties or significant social events without prior discussion with the organization staff.
•Security.
•General health & safety and familiarisation with safety procedures and the risk assessment relating to the house.
•Damage and fair wear and tear.

Tarefas: EVS volunteers gain many experiences living in a foreign country and working at new tasks and skills. We provide some training for all our ES volunteers in the form of on-the-job training and by their attending some formal training events. Each EVS volunteer will have a mentor who undertakes regular one-to one meetings with the volunteer and this will include ensuring that the volunteer is receiving appropriate training. In the past we had some problems with providing the mentoring service to a good standard as it was undertaken by a different member of staff for each volunteer. More recently one person undertakes a mentoring role for all the EVS volunteers based at the organization's the office and this allows a more focused approach and ensuring each volunteer gets the same level of support. This member of staff who acts as mentor is also responsible for paying the volunteers their weekly allowance every Monday and sees all the EVS volunteers regularly and can provide help and support on an ongoing basis between formal mentoring sessions. If necessary the mentor can speak to other staff who the volunteer is working with to sort out difficulties or problems.
