Resumo: The day-care center Brosepark is in a landmarked mansion built in the 1920s in the Pankow district Niederschönhausen. It has a large garden with very old trees and in the surroundings are three parks, a botanical garden and several playgrounds. The center is reachable with public transportation. At the moment, there are 60 children, of which three are handicapped and three more who are in the process of being officially acknowledged as handicapped persons, cared for by 11 educators and one director. The groups are of mixed age and are spread out over two floors. The day-care center is open on Monday to Friday from 6 am to 6 pm and there is no closure in the summer vacation. A popular residential area with old and new buildings has developed around the day-care center in recent years. Niederschönhausen has become a particulary child-friendly and child-rich neighborhood due to the three parks and their playgrounds. Convenient shopping possibilities with five supermarkets and an appropriate cultural offer with a cinema, sports, and leisure centers lure more and more families to Niederschönhausen.We care for children of all social backgrounds in our day-care center. There are single parent families, patchwork families and, many married couples with one or two children. About 85 % of the parents are in employment. In consideration of their work hours we open our center for twelve hours a day. We also care for children from other countries, some live in the near embassies such as the Mongolian and the Georgian embassy. The latter natuarally speak different languages and come to our center in order to learn German. The employees of adajcent companies such as a bakery, a butcher, a gas station and a window company are very friendly towards our center. We often are invited to parties and events. The educators do their work according to the "situation principle". The children are observed on a regular basis and the offers are based upon the present life situations. The groups are of mixed age so that the children can gain experience in learning and social topics. The children are brought up to be social and tolerant persons who accept other people as they are, regardless of their origin. They are supposed to learn to respect different opinions and the differences of other people such as those with handicaps, and to feel that different cultures are an enrichment. Every afternoon one educator offers a workshop on a given topic. The children can decide between singing and dancing, cooking and baking, sports and athletics, basic math skills, arts and crafts, relaxation and imaginary journeys, and the preschool group. At the moment we are working on arranging a form of bilingual education in our center, using the immersion method (German/English).
Concerning the project's environment:
This city is the Federal Capital,as well as one of the 16 German states. The Federal Parliament as well as the government have their seats here. The city was divided into West and East during 40 years. This division still has lasting effects today, 18 years after the Reunification. 3.4 million inhabitants are spread out over 12 city districts. Of these, approx. 13,96% are foreigners. The unemployment rate of the city lies at approx. 15,5%. Our facilities are in the Pankow District, the most populous one with 350,000 people. Pankow is the second largest district with an area of 10,000 hectares. Pankow itself is divided into 13 quarters, lying in the northeast of the city. Pankow played an important role during the East German government - Niederschönhausen Castle was the residence of the President from 1949 to 1960. Numerous foreign embassies took their offices there during the East German period and some have stayed there even today. Pankow is a very diverse district. There are industrial zones as well as natural reserves, new as well as old housing, centres of nightlife as well as extensive parks. People from 160 nations live here, the percentage of foreign residents is 7,6% (2008) and the unemployment rate is 10.4% (07.01.09). Pankow has well developed infrastructure for cars as well as public transport. Concerning the economy, diverse branches of trade have establishments in Pankow, e.g. media, IT, railroad construction, a biomedial research facility, and a health-care center. The majority of the companies are small ones with up to five employees active in trade, construction, and services.
Niederschönhausen´s landmark is its castle, former home to Elisabeth Christine, wife of Friedrich II. The president of the East German Government lived here, as well as guests of the state.
The day-care center Brosepark has no experience with the program Youth for Europe.
Perfil: Volunteers that apply to work with us should mainly be motivated to work a few months in a day-care center. They should be open for the new and unfamiliar, be tolerant, possess empathy and adequate social skills. It is important that they value the work with children and have no difficulty in making contact with people. They should be reliable and responsible. Since the volunteer will share living quarters, we would expect them to be self-reliant. The selection process will proceed according to the applications received. The criterion for acceptance is the suitability for work in a day-care center. We would prefer to concentrate on youths between 18 and 25, respective 30 years of age. Volunteers that apply to work with us should mainly be motivated to work a few months in a day-care center. They should be open for the new and unfamiliar, be tolerant, possess empathy and adequate social skills. It is important that they value the work with children and have no difficulty in making contact with people. They should be reliable and responsible. Tarefas: The volunteer will aid the work of the present teachers in a child group. Our teacher will have the full responsibility and supervising duty while the volunteer will participate in the child care under the supervision of the teacher. The volunteer will at no time be the sole responsible, let alone replace our teacher.The volunteer's task will be to play with the children and supervise them, sing with them, do handicrafts, carry out experiments, accompany them on excursions, and everything else belonging to the daily routine of a day-care center.We view those volunteers as an enrichment that are able to tell colleagues and children a bit about their home country and language, so that all can marvel about the differences and commonness. The volunteer will be given the opportunity to take a "sneak preview" of one of the domains and find out if he or she enjoys the work with children. From the colleagues he or she will learn didactic concepts of child care and education. He or she will receive ideas on how to manage everyday life with children, in particular children with disabilities, as well as children with a foreign background.The volunteer will be given the possibility to carry out projects and offers independently, about topics that he or she can freely choose. In addition, the volunteer will be given a voice in daily life as well as group meetings (suggesting and organizing excursions, making daily plans, discussing and comparing his or her observations with colleagues). Furthermore he/she will receive a German language course and the possibility to take part in a Team further education.
We wish for the volunteer that he or she will organize and carry out projects on his/her own with regard to the children's knowledge and awareness of Europe. The children should be inspired in the culture of the volunteer, for example by celebrating traditional occasions or by learning things in a workshop on a long-term basis. This means trying typical food, learning new words and to see where this foreign country is located on the globe. To summarize things - we want to know where the volunteer is from and how life works over there. The volunteer can furthermore introduce personal interests to us. We would like to learn about his or her hobbies such as sports, cultural interests or music and like him or her to introduce these to us and let us work things out together.
