Resumo: The hosting organization is located in a small village with around 100 inhabitants, the first one of its kind in the world, where grown-up mentally handicapped people plus staff live. It has been described as a "microworld" where many activities are run and all the inhabitants take full part in them. The project runs and owns its own local store, greenhouses and other biological gardening during the summer months, weaving and carpentry workshops are also managed by the community. An own theatre group is active and some volunteers are interested to help and participate in those activities. The project strongly interacts with the local and national communities and this offers a great opportunity for the hosted volunteer to be part of the project, whose members understand themselves as part of an enlarged family, as well as the be exposed to Icelandic reality at large.
Transportation is not frequent from the town to the capital. The volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her fares out of the village if he/she wishes to travel during weekends and days off. The people who live in the town often go into the city and are willing to give the volunteers a lift.
The town is an isolated place, and even more during the winter and at the beginning of the stay when you have just arrived from a very different lifestile. But at the same time the town is a very good place to learn Icelandic very well, more than in the cities where almost everybody can and prefers to speak english.
Perfil: The organization are open to receive volunteers between 18 and 30 years old from ALL European countries and countries generally involved in the YOUTH programme.
We want every applicant to offer exciting and different experiences into the group thus creating a diverse range of people with various interests from a variety of different backgrounds. Therefore, acceptance is dependent on the variety of qualities we feel a candidate can add to our community and sustainable growth.
" You must be interested in working with people with disabilities.
" You must be responsible and motivated to work.
" You should be ready to learn Icelandic.
" You should have ability to adjust to the prevailing situations at the project site.
" You should be aware of long, cold and dark winter days and nights in Iceland, and also of the bright summer nights when the sun hardly sets down.
" You should be open-minded, flexible, enthusiastic, independent, and responsible and be interested in working with people.
" You should be interested to be with people, with different background, culture, language, faith and race, open to new experiences and interested in discovering different society and culture.
Here at the organization we work hard, but we also like to have a good social life so being able to balance work and 'play' is essential. We are looking for a person that is extremely adaptable, has an optimistic approach towards life and can enjoy their time here in this unique community.
Normally candidates find out about the project placements in the EVS database, by contacting a sending organisation or by searching the internet for youth exchange work. If we have available project placement we inform our partners in Europe, and those volunteers that have showed interest in our projects before.
A candidate is selected when his/her interests are compatible with the project profile. Always candidates can ask us why they were or were not selected. We can see if they match with the activity through their motivation letters and CV's and also by conducting phone interviews.
