Resumo: Szczecin - for centuries - has provided a centre from which Europe's transit routes have crossed from west to east and from north through the Balitc to the south of Europe. Szczecin is the country's seventh-largest city and a major seaport in Poland.
There are several cultural centres such as cinemas, theatres, museums,The Pomeranian Dukes' Castle, etc. Various attractions - pubs, student clubs and galleries are a quarantee that everyone can find something interesting here. It is also quite a big students' city - many colleges such as the University of Szczecin, Technical University , Art Academy or Medical Univesity and several private colleges are located here.
Over the centuries, Szczecin has been Polish, Danish, Prussian and Swedish, and was also under French occupation. Each of these periods has left its mark on its urban landscape. After World War II, the Polish borders shifted westward. Some of the traces of the city’s German history have been erased, some have been maintained. Today the inhabitants of Szczecin are discovering the history of their city again and they are also taking advantage of its geographical position in Europe: people from Szczecin use the Berlin airports, German people go to Polish dentists and many Swedish tourists come to Szczecin’s shopping centres.
In the city centre, discover the Brama Krolewska Baroque city gate with a Latin inscription proclaiming that Szczecin belonged to the state of Brandenburg, when Friedrich Wilhelm, King of Prussia, bought the city from Sweden for two million Thalars. Several buildings are inspired by the style of medieval Hanseatic town halls.
Szczecin is located very close to German border and quite close to the seaside, it is surrounded by forests, rivers and lakes and provides great opportunities for active time spending.
