Resumo: The hosting organization is a Jewish cultural center. The kindergarten is a part of the organisation. It was opened in 1995 supported by the city administration and the American Jewish committee called Joint. The educational program is supported by the international. In the beginning this project was planned as an experimental ground. The aim of the experiment is fixed as the following: “Educational conditions for creation of national identity and tolerance in the institutions with a national component.” The kindergarten hosts more 70 children.

The children are educated according to the program approved by the government of Russian Federation. In addition they get to know the history and traditions of Jewish people, learn Hebrew. The language classes are given in the form of games, songs, poems and theatre.

The organization children participate in the international kids festivals and represent Jewish culture.

Perfil: We want volunteers in the first place to be motivated to get to know another way of life and to put themselves in a new social and cultural situation in order to try to understand other ways of living. The Contact point organization will publish the description of the project on EVS database and send the description to sending partner-organizations, so that they could distribute the information to young people interested in EVS in their countries. The Contact organization we work with Lastochki/Icye Russia has a clear way of selecting and preparing volunteers, whilst trying to match volunteers to suitable projects and countries in accordance with EVS philosophy and criteria. Lastochki receive applications of the possible candidates from their partner-organizations and go through the applications. The coordinators fulfil the first selection according to the criteria of the hosting organisation. The attention is mostly paid to the motivation and experience of the volunteers. If motivation matches the project, the coordinators contact the supervisors of the project for further selection.

The selection is done on agreement with the supervisors of the hosting organization. In most cases the volunteers are asked for a Skype interview. We also want to stress that the processes of selection and preparation are hard to separate and are mutually supportive. This is best achieved through an open dialogue and exchange of information between staff/co-workers and prospective participants. It is in fact during this initial process that trust is built, roles and expectations are questioned and clarified. The volunteer has to be interested in the theme of the children and Jewish culture. S/he has to be motivated to participate in many different activities and willing to take a lot of initiatives him/herself. S/he can be artistic, creative, and enthusiastic. S/he has to be willing to work with youngsters and to create new activities basing on experience of intercultural education. The volunteer is not a professional worker. Volunteer will have increasing (shared) partial responsibilities while growing in the project but never will s/he have a final and sole responsibility. She/he will always work under supervision of someone from the centre. Besides that, volunteers will have the opportunity to elaborate tasks and initiatives which are complementary to the tasks that have to be carried out in the local organization itself. Of course, in this case, almost all co-workers are volunteers but they are locals who make part of the project for a longer time and therefore have more responsibilities. The sending organisation should be one of European partners to be able to submit the application to the National agency. We would like the sending organisation to be aware of the Russian culture and Russian traditions. It would be perfect if the sending coordinator could speak some Russian and had even little experience of communication with Russians/had ever visited Russia.

Tarefas: The volunteers who come to be involved in this project are asked to show the diversity of their cultures, to show children different patterns that form individuality. The volunteers help in organising playing facilities and any forms of traditional games, dances and art. This particular project gives an opportunity for the EVS volunteers to learn a lot about their hosting country multicultural, traditions, way of life and to share their own instead. By investigating new approaches to work with children without knowing the language perfectly and being the representative of another culture, the volunteers may open some features that they have never known about themselves. On the other hand they would learn about their home culture by comparing it to the Russian one. EVS volunteers will participate in general activities of the kindergarten: Involvement in day to day activities of the kindergarten on organisation of children care (75%). Involvement in preparation and organisation of regular events, run by the kindergarten: traditional Jewish fests, regular cultural events for parents, theatre and concerts for children, etc. (25%). Volunteers work will be from Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 16.00. Saturday, Sunday and public holidays are days off. Everyday from 08:00 to 11:00 volunteers will assist children during breakfast and dressing up as well as take children outdoors, organizing outdoor activities. Later volunteers can support or offer between 11:00-12:00 different activities like indoor activities, like drawing, handicrafts, computer games, English lessons. From 12:00 to 13:00 volunteers will assist children during eating and preparing to sleep and later from 13:00 – 14:00 will have lunch break. From 14:00 to 15:00 volunteers can participate in the events organized by kindergarten or work on individual projects (a workshop, newsletters, photo presentations, etc.). Finally from 15:00 to 16:00 work on individual project can continue or we might ask to search the internet for the possible activities of the organizations in the social field.

Depending on the skills and interests of the volunteers, they may be doing different activities:
- assistance to the staff during the day, looking after the children during inside and outside doors,
- creation of language and cultural workshops,
- participation in games and competitions,
- participation in music shows, theatre and literature workshops,
- organisation of handicraft workshops,
- organisation of theatre sketches,
- assistance to staff to clean the rooms, dishes, toys, to dress children and organise meals for children.

The supervisor at the project will provide the volunteer with necessary assistance during organisation of this or that activity. The volunteer will be invited to the meetings of the staff to discuss the coming events and to receive instructions on the particular tasks of the volunteer. Moreover the volunteers could be asked to contribute to the project by initiating any kind of activity together with children. The volunteer will surely obtain very practical skills like taking care of children, assisting during meals and walks, organizing day-to-day activities for them. Routine work with youngsters will teach the volunteer to be tolerant and patient, attentive and responsible. The volunteer will have a chance to get to know the traditions of Jewish people in the city, to attend traditional fests and even to learn Hebrew together with children and parents. The volunteer will have an opportunity to share his/her experiences and impressions with other volunteers during regular meeting, when preparing a traditional film about volunteers, during information meetings with local young volunteers.

At the end of the project the volunteer will fill out the Youthpass. Lastochki will provide him/her with information on the Youthpass at the beginning of the project and assist together with the mentor to fill it out. The language course will ne organised by Lastochki at the beginning of the project. Every volunteer will receive 30 hours of a language course. This will be done either in groups or individually.
