Resumo: The hosting organization in Ukraine was officially recognized in 2008 and became a member of the International Federation communities. The organization was founded in France in 1964 by Jean Vanier. Today there are more than 130 faith-based communities belonging to the organization federation in 35 countries around the world.
The organization is centered on the gifts and needs of people who have mental disabilities and are at the heart of the community. Together with young people (assistants) choosing to live with them in small residences, they create a home and participate in meaningful daytime work and activities.
Today the organization in Ukraine brings together about 66 persons with mental disabilities and 21 assistants who share community life together in four daily handicraft workshops and afternoon program for those with more profound disabilities.
Day-to-day coordination of the Workshop Program is provided by the management team consisting of 5 persons. Here persons with intellectual disabilities ("core members") and assistants-volunteers can express themselves through meaningful work, activity, sharing in friendship, celebration and prayer. Members engage in the creation of beaded artwork, decorative candles, icons, simple woodworking, handy-made paper and greeting card in an atmosphere of love and respect where everyone is equal. They also enjoy cooking, going on outings, praying together and celebrating. The organization opens up the gifts of people with mental disabilities, contributes to their integration into the society and promotes personal and spiritual growth.
Perfil: We are glad to welcome young people of all backgrounds, gender and culture and at the same time with the following attitudes:
- Interest in working and motivation to have a relationship with people who have handicap and problems of disabilities.
- Ability to put himself/herself in the relationship with the disabled people being friendly, communicative, responsible, sincere and patient.
- Work in a team and support the community spirit.
- Good mental and physical health.
Volunteer should be open to new things and challenges, new culture and life's conditions therefore to be flexible, adaptable and mature. Basic knowledge of Ukrainian, Russian or Polish language is very welcomed.
age: 18 until 30 years old
Tarefas: In each of 5 workshops there are approximately 9 -15 people with mental disabilities and 3-5 assistants who work there constantly. Volunteers would participate in daily (Monday-Friday) workshop programs from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. for work, celebration and prayer. They are expected to help people with mental disabilities to make decorative candles, greeting cards, icons, hand-beaded necklaces, woven bags or hand-made paper.
These activities can be new for volunteers, so they get a chance to be taught the basic items by the assistants. Volunteers can be also involved in cooking. This allows to cook meals typical of their countries and which can be prepared with the disabled and then enjoyed all together. They can learn the traditional Ukrainian cuisine as well. At the workshop "Smile" for people with more profound disabilities volunteers should be able to assist with art and music activities and at moments help with pushing wheelchairs, access to toilet, or with eating etc. In general, they join the core members in activities, games and helping with some simply craft works. We are always open to new ideas and initiatives from volunteers' side.
Extracurricular program: Volunteers are invited to participate in community gatherings going somewhere for a weekend or camping together; to participate in prayers and sharing. We don't insist on a Christian faith if you join us - we welcome people of any faith. The total number of hours expected for the volunteer is 30-35 hours weekly.
