There are lots of cultural and sportive events: Among the historical city centre there are a lot of museums, theatres, youth centres, sport clubs, international sport competitions etc.. The two universities as well as a few colleges offer possibilities to take part in language courses, seminars etc. and get to know young local people.
In addition it's easy to go by train to Hamburg or the North Sea.
Perfil: requirements:
- experiences in sports and/or youth work
- motivation and openness for a new country and work in a youth centre
- age: 18 until 30 years old
Tarefas: 1. HOST ORGANIZATION:
The host organization is the organization. Various key activities offer many possibilities where European volunteers can work.
2. POSSIBLE FIELD OF APPLICATION:
A: YOUTH CENTRE
One European volunteer will work in the youth centre, which is situated in the suburb. There live about 7.500 people of different nationalities. The unemployment rate is 12,6% and 14,7% are on welfare.
Working activities:
The volunteer assists the staff in the (sport related) youth work. Depending on his interests and strenghs he can offer some activities on his own, organize projects or workshops and support the team in their daily work (e.g.in the recording studio, during trips or at parties etc.).
The youth are of different nationalities. The international volunteer could extend his international perspective by the youth living in the town. Particularly young people with an immigrant backround, who still are underrepresented in the EVS, have lots of skills like e.g. bilingualism, which could be an advantage for international voluntary services. International volunteers could serve as role models for the vistors and offer them insight into many possibilities in the increasing exchange between European countries. They could also make contacts between the organization and organizations in their home countryin order to establish international youth meetings or extend already existing international projects.
B: SPORT CLUBS:
In the long-term it's also planned that European Volunteers will work in sport clubs. There they can support the trainers in coaching teams, teach children in sports, help to organize events, projects, holiday activities or arrange smaller projects on their own.
As lots of sports clubs already work together with young volunteers, a "tandem" could also be established between "FSJ" and EVS, so that young people can learn and support each other.
Furthermore volunteers could work in the so called "Stützpunktvereine" which participate in a special programme for integration of immigrants and deprived people via sports (="Integration durch Sport"). European volunteers could support these clubs in their integration work as well as in the network. Depending on the home country of the volunteers their native language might be advantageous.
3. ROLE OF THE VOLUNTEERS:
The volunteers are supported by the employees as well as the voluntary tutor. They do not replace an employee, instead support the team and get the possibility to test themselves and - depending on their abilities and interests - organize own projects.
4. LEARNING POSSIBILITIES:
- Living experience and getting along in another country
- various insights in the living conditions of children and youth growing up in the town
- participations in courses of the (sport related) youth work (e.g. basic knowledge of leading groups, education as a trainer)
- space, to test own abbilities, lead groups and organize own projects
- language improval and communication skills
- improvement of organizing abilities
- improvement of intercultural skills
Regularly meetings with the international and German young volunteers offer the opportunity to exchange experiences with people of the same age.
