Resumo: The hosting organization is a Registered Charity, and a company limited by guarantee. Options for Life is the umbrella name for a non-profit making voluntary organisation which enables people with learning disabilities to advance their personal development and lead a full life within the community, using the support and friendship of volunteers. The organisation compliments and operates in partnership with other statutory and voluntary agencies.
The organisation provides a wide range of small, quality, innovative services for people with learning disabilities, and services are broadly split between day services for people with severe and profound learning disabilities, and support services for people with mild and moderate learning disabilities. We currently employ approximately 60-70 staff and benefit from the support of approximately 20 volunteers. The organisation has a budget of £1.5million per year, with the bulk of our funding coming from a range of contracts with the local authority. The rest of our funding comes by way of donations and grants from charitable trusts. In March 1999, Options for Life received the Investors in People award, having met national standards regarding the training and development of staff, and re-achieved this award in September 2003, November 2006 and March 2010. In April 2008, we were awarded the Investing in Volunteers award.
The organization is based in the borough of the West Midlands. The region forms part of a region known as 'The Black Country'. The region covers an area of approximately 21,000 acres and has a population of approximately 294,000. 15% of people who live in Sandwell are from ethnic minorities. People of different religions live side by side - Christian, Roman Catholic, Sikh, Hindu, Muslim, and Rastafarian, as well as many other religions.
The region is a heavily industrial area, with 35% of all jobs in the manufacturing industry - almost twice the national average. Sandwell has a high rate of unemployment (approximately 7% of the population are unemployed). A quarter of all residents are dependent on state benefits.
Perfil: Age 18-30
Tarefas: Staff, volunteers and service users have equal status within the organisation and are all fully involved in the development and operation of the services. This makes for open relationships based on friendship and respect, and helps to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Options for Life aims to be an 'invisible' service. It seeks not to stand out as special or separate, but rather to make sure that people with learning disabilities have equal opportunity to be involved in the life of their community. It is important that they are able to feel confident enough to say "I can do it!", and to recognise their worth.
EVS volunteers taking part in this project will work alongside staff and other volunteers to provide a varied and interesting programme of person-centred community based leisure and social activities for our service users. Duties may include escorting people on the minibus, supporting service users to enjoy their activities, assisting paid staff to provide personal care, administration tasks, preparing rooms for activities and clearing away after, enabling service users to take part in leisure activities on evenings or weekends, and taking part in holidays with service users.
