Resumo: The Rest home is located in a small town (around 110.000 inhabitants) at 60 km from Bologna and well connected to the rest of Italy thanks to an efficient railway network. The town is a town built for people who can easly move around by bike, the most commom means of transport – not only among youth – thanks to the presence of many cycle lanes, and relax in the green areas distributed in the various districts. Moreover, the presence of the University of Bologna has allowed the city to host in the last decades thousands of students coming from different Italian regions but also from many European and extra-EU countries thus favouring the development of new cultural offers but also the awareness of the importance of an International dimension which enriched the city social life.

As we said, the town has many green areas and the rest home overlooks one of this wide park called used by the elderly residents to go walking, sit on the benches or do outdoor activities. The building has two main wards with residents’ rooms and bathrooms (divided in sheltered house, in which are hosted 38 non self-sufficient elderly people, and guest house, with 44 self-sufficient and partially self-sufficient people) and a third ward including the kitchen, some relax areas with sofas and armchairs, a theatre, a gym, a multifunctional room where activities of the day centre are realized and other service rooms (hair dresser, laundry, meeting space…). Moreover, in the inner garden there is also a greenhouse for therapeutic horticulture.

Perfil: We agreed that cordinate organization will be responsible for the selection process, due to its long experience with EVS, in collaboration with the volunteer coordinator of the rest home.

The opportunity to host a volunteer will be communicated primarily to the sending organization with which Consorzio has had previous positive contacts but will also be published in specific website for partner search. Candidatures will then be collected through mails, CVs and motivation letters that will be examined and followed eventually by an interview (skype or telephone). There are no specific requirements as far as gender, age and geographical background, but candidates should prove to have good relational skills, enthusiams to get in contact with elderly people, awareness of the situation they may face (difficult moments such as the progressive decline or death of the residents). The selected volunteers will receive a confirmation e-mail with our the final decision and on the basis of their ideas and proposals related to the activities of the rest home, the EVS project will be written.

We have no preference as for the sending organizations provided that they do correclty their work in checking the real motivations of the volunteer in doing EVS in our project and also in giving him/her all the useful information about our organization and the possible difficulty that can be faced in integrating in a different working and living environment.

Tarefas: The European volunteers will have the possibility to develop their own competences taking part in various activities of the rest home and learning to communicate with the guests, the social workers and volunteers. In particular the volunteer will join the staff in the organization of workshops, in everyday tasks and recreational activities and also in giving visibility to the rest home through the updating of its website and facebook profile thus sharing their enthusiasm and personal abilities with the people the rest home and developing at the same time new ideas and proposals. Through a process of growth during which they will be assisted by a supervisor and a mentor, the volunteers will improve their transversal competences such as communication skills, target orientation, sense of iniciative, attention to personal relationships and team work but they will also develop intercultural competence thanks to the contact with other International voluntees (coming from the Adventist communities around the world) and young Italians, Europeans and extra-EU living in the town.

As a matter of fact, the rest home has asked coordinates EVS hosting projects since 2002, to give support in the involvement of their European volunteers in meetings where they can share and evaluate the experience e better integrate in the local communtiy.
The role of volunteers in the rest home will always be of support to the staff but will be mainly targeted to the socializing dimension as they should involve the elderly in the different moments of the day (leisure activities, meals, workshops and individual or group displacement within or outside the house). In particular volunteers will be asked to actively participate in the following:
1. Cognitive and handicraft work – support to the staff and the elderly in the different workshops that usually involve the five senses: for example, stimulation of sight through newspaper and magazine reading or through painting and graphic expression according to the interests of the residents; stimulation of touch by creating small objects with recycled material; stimulation of taste and smell through regional, national and International kitchen activities; stimulation of hearing by listening to and producing music also with the help of a music therapist and by encouraging the commemoration of one’s life in front of others.

2. Relational area and music therapy – support and active participation in recreational and socializing moments in which residents are stimulated to establish contacts and exchange experiences. These moments can be dedicated for example to the presentation of the place of origin of the residents and of the volunteers and can be helped by the use of typical songs and traditional music.

3. Psychomotor area – support to the elderly in specific activities linked to spacial perception, cognition, relax and non verbal communication (for which the volunteers will recieve specific indication and training by the social workers), walking in the near park and short trips in the neighbourhood.

4. Management of the rest home – support to the staff in the tidying-up and decoration of the building, in the execution of limited administrative tasks and contribution to the updating of communication instruments of the rest homesuch as the website and facebook profile by producing for example photografic material in particular events and parties (creating photo-portrait of and video-interviews to the elderly residents

Volunteers will be involved in the different activities according to their interests, attitude and availability having the possibility to choose where to give the best contribution. The service will be full-time for 5 days per week with a fixed day off (Saturaday) and a second one to be agreed; there will be day-shifts (from 8 a.m to 3 p.m) or afternoon-shifts (from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.) always respecting the weekly total of 32-35 hours. When lunch or dinner are within the service timetable, volunteers will have meals in the canteen of the rest home as we believe that these moments can contribute to their integration with the staff and the residents allowing to share also mutual culinary habits.
