Resumo: The Head Office of the organization is situated in the heart of Florence, a short distance from the museums, attractions and meeting-places for young people from the city and visitors. Florence, one of the most visited cities in Italy, has about 370,000 inhabitants. The old town center was proclaimed an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. With its priceless collections of architecture, paintings, sculptures, historical and scientific treasures, it can truly be described as ‘an open-air museum’.

Universally recognized as the cradle of the Renaissance, the city offers endless opportunities for cultural enrichment and social exchanges; it is home to one of the oldest and most prestigious Italian Universities, with about 60,000 students from Italy and the World, giving to the city an international character whilst retaining the dimension of a small, fully livable city.

According to relatively recent data, the population of the Florence area is made up about 85% of Italians and 25% foreigners (most of these are Chinese, Romanian, Albanian, Filipino and Peruvian).
The economic context is very varied, with a great tradition of handcrafts, especially furniture, gold manufacturing, paper decorations and leather processing. Industries have a high profile in many areas: chemical-pharmaceutical, lighting, high fashion clothing, clockwork, stoneware and cosmetics.

Geographically, Florence is in the middle of a plain rounded by beautiful green hills, where there are rural and agricultural traditions, enjoying a different but well established environment and thus completing the urban settlement. It is very easy for the volunteers to travel both from the Head Office and their lodgings by public transport. Outside of the city (and easily reached by public transport) are sport and recreational facilities for the volunteers. At a short distance from the accommodation, the central train station provides connections to the most important Italian cities as well as the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic Coast where there are some exclusive, amusement and seaside places. The others branches of the Association are in a suburban zone of the city where the volunteers can live in an environment geared to meet the mores and lores of Italian people instead of the touristic-intercultural down- town environment. All the service movement will be done with the Association’s transport, in their free time volunteer swill have their own bike or a public transport pass.

We would like volunteers to see this experience as an opportunity to grow and improve in many aspects. Volunteers will be envolved in all the proposed activities because each typology gives them the possibility to add knowledge and self awareness to their experience. Communication and comparison will be the main learning opportunities which this experience offers to the volunteer and us too. Each service described below focuses on different areas or situations of life, so we think they stimulate and develop different skills in personal growth.

Volunteers will be closely followed by our staff although they will be free to bring their personality, ideas and personal competence; we aim to allow them to reach a good level of self-confidence. They will bring and share with us their culture and develop their self awareness, we also are sure they will improve their relational competences thanks also to daily cohabitation and sharing with people who come from other contexts. Volunteers will follow an Italian language course and if they want will be able to participate in informal English-Italian meetings so as to practise basic communication skills for life and work.

Perfil: Experience or specific qualification are not required in our project. We pay attention to strong motivation of the candidate, collaboration, learning and good will to understand our Association, we take it for granted that they will be open for new experiences as well as responsible, creative persons, enthusiastic, with an active role.

Although we are a Catholic organisation the religion of the volunteers is not important, we are open to people of different faiths, but we ask for the greatest regard for every personal value.

The recruitment and the selection of the volunteers will be done by our team based on certain basic principles, such as
anti-discrimination: we will not ask for details on ethnicity, sexual orientation or political position.
The candidates' motivation letters and curricula will be examined with only and ultimate intention to get to know them better. Training in certain areas, certification of competence, knowledge of language will not constitute grounds for removal or acceptance.

Age: 18 until 30 years old

Tarefas: In particular, the role of EVS volunteers will be the creation of a new character in the Association: we would like to support and assist the birth of a movement which will expand the outlook of our community, focusing and enhancing value of diversity. Their role will be also that of enriching our usual services.

Health and social transport, welcoming services
Since its foundation has taken care of the transport of sick people from or for hospitals, day centers, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, by ambulance or equipped vehicles. Volunteers will support the staff as observers and escorts, they will draw up the necessary documentation for the transport, assisting and reassuring the relatives of the users. They will be able to follow a first aid course reaching the “Rescuer at First Level” qualification.
This kind of service can be done from the Head Office or from the branches of the Association.

At the consulting rooms volunteers will welcome the users giving information and helping the staff in their daily work, these structures are inside the branches of the Association.

Personal care
Our Association visits, one/two times a day, old, sick or disabled persons with special needs at their own home, basic assistance is given by permanent staff, volunteers will back up the activities of the staff with specific activities and specific projects which improve the quality of life of people with special needs: reading books/newspapers, support or handling of small assignments, going for walks in parks and gardens, company which helps the users to overcome isolation, loneliness, etc.

Activities in Disability Centers and Rest Homes
The volunteers will be involved in animation and supporting the staff in the free time of the guests, organizing creative recreation events and outdoor activities so as to improve their quality of life.

In particular the services will be:
Company and animation in vacations trips, recreational events, staging of performances, assistance/teaching at the computer labs, listening and emphatic communication with the guests and especially with their families, cooking labs, parties, craft object labs, drawing, photograph, etc.

Solidarity markets/Food Aid
Solidarity markets are organized at Christmas and Easter and sometimes for special events during the year. They are run in city center areas.

“Le 12 Ceste” are two little markets where needy people can find basic food stuffs and other commodities.
The “Food Aid” staff also take food packets to the homes of people with special needs.

Volunteers will help the staff in the organization, management and setting up of the shops/markets, interacting with users, delivery of the packets, fund raising, etc.
They will also be encouraged to study and plan new forms of organization, look for contributors, fund-raising; this will be realized through regular meetings with the Mentor and the person in charge of the Association.
All the meetings will be scheduled and communicated to the volunteers.

Volunteering Promotion and European Awareness
Finally, after a training period, volunteers will work independently in their self-designed and created activity, previously communicated and discussed with their Mentor and the SVE Project manager.

Design of information and illustrative materials, brochures, in English or in the language of the volunteers.
Drafting of the history of our Museum and promotion of it; the welcoming of groups who want to visit the city and Museum, in English or in their own language.

Promoting/marketing volunteering as a valuable activity for young people, through the organization of events, promotion, publicizing activities etc. Organization of festivals and meetings with volunteers of our Association, youth of the region and volunteers of others Associations. The purpose of this activity will be to stimulate young people to contribute to the volunteering World.

Helping the Mentor and the staff of the Association to draft the documentation of the SVE Project, promotion of it through web sites, articles and reports.
Diffusion of the culture and lore of the involved countries, through laboratories and interactive games, little shows in Italian, English and in the language of the involved countries, cooking days, etc.

The hosting organization is a group inside the Association which organizes tours and trips for citizens and Association members; volunteers will be able to chart a course in their country describing the places worth seeing, these will be presented to the users.
In this area will give them the space to develop the projects they have created through their own initiative.
Each of these activities will be documented by written/audio/video materials, it will remain in the Association for the realization of “A Mosaic of Lore, Customs and Testimonies from Europe” for subsequent EVS volunteers, for our volunteers, Florentine citizens and for the many tourists who visit our Florence.

The volunteers will be asked to do their service from Monday to Saturday, the duration of the service will be decided in accordance with the Association's priorities although the volunteers will work for a maximum of 32h per week for 5 days per week.
It is important that volunteers are sometimes available during the week-end for special events.
