Resumo: Our plan will be implemented in the city, and more specifically, a big part of it in the Municipality of Korydallos.
Surrounded by mountains and sea, central city is a place that is mainly sunny and full of contrasts as far as its image is concerned. On one hand, the city has strongly urbanized areas with high blocks of buildings and wide highways and on the other hand, in the center and the suburbs, there are neoclassical buildings and narrow alleys that give a nostalgic sense at Atticas image.
Greece and its capital, was for many eons the cradle of civilization in Europe. Proof of this long history exists everywhere in the capital in the form of archaeological monuments and world heritage sites, which, despite the fact that they aren't saved in their initial state but only a part of it, they are a jewel in a highly populated area full of life.
Even today, the city is a cultural and social center, contributing to cultural development with museum and art exhibitions, theatrical plays, films and contests, concerts of modern and traditional music, intense literary and journalistic activity.
In the city there are groves that give a sigh of relief to the heavy urbanization, protected habitats and parks all around its municipalities. Nevertheless, it faces serious environmental problems with the low percentage of green space per inhabitant.
The cost of living in the area is higher than the rest urban centers of the country. However, the monthly allowance that will be given to the volunteers will be sufficient for their off service activities so that they will visit different places, have fun and know the area.
Downtown, one can find anything one needs in a short distance from one's residence. Entertainment places as well as shops, services and hospitals, all are somewhere easily and quickly reachable with public transport.
Moreover, public transport, buses, metro and tram, are frequent within the hour to service the public and they move from 5 (a.m) in the morning until midnight, to facilitate people's commute.
We should highlight that the city is the country's tourism center, so the inhabitants are used to people from different countries, they are polite and hospitable. Thus, the socialization of the volunteers will take place smoothly and easily, with their mentor's help.
We will implement our action in cooperation with municipalities whose cultural and environmental issues face problems so that, at the same time, the spirit of volunteering will be propelled, also, to the local community.
One of them is the Municipality of Korydallos, at the foot of Mountain Egaleo. The municipality expanses in an area of 4,8 square kilometers and it is the node between the industrial zone, the center of the city and Piraeus. It shares boarders with the Municipalities of Nikaia, Agia VarVara and Haidari.
In the Municipality there are many parks and groves, while, it has one of the most central markets in the area with all kinds of shops, services and entertainment places. In general, Muncipality of Korydallos is considered the center of the area of Piraeus and West Attica.
The municipality is connected with the city and Piraeus with four (4) frequent bus lines while other local bus lines lead to the metro in Municipality of Egaleo.
We will make sure to create a friendly environment where the volunteers will be able to contribute but also express themselves freely and creatively, using their personal abilities.
So, we are trying to show the benefits of the existence of green spaces, as well as the importance of the activities that stimulate positively the young spirit and mind and to which the young people will have free access.
Young people that will participate in voluntary service will do so free of charge concerning their stay, the local transport, and their food arrangements (except for a possible contribution to travel costs' max. 10%).
A monthly allowance will be provided to them, while in the case that they are not coming from a country member of the European Union, our organization will ensure providing visa and residence permit.
The volunteers, through EVS, will be able to get acquainted with a different cultural environment and nurture relationships with people of different social, cultural, economic and religious background. Thus, they will gain tolerance to diversity and will find out about the idea of multiculturalism. They will familiarize with the Greek language, have lessons and gain some experience in using it.
It would be of importance to point out that the knowledge the volunteers will gain will be through non-formal educational and intercultural learning. The keys to success are dialog, interaction and lack of unimaginative ways of teaching where there is no room for the participation of the learners.
Moreover, the visits to cultural and archaeological centers, museums, theatrical plays and other events that will be organized through conversations and after consultation with their mentor will be a perfect experience, since the volunteers will be given the chance to get in direct contact with our country's culture.
As far as the implementation of the activities is concerned, the volunteers will get the necessary training on-arrival through the Training and Evaluation Cycle, in order to be introduced to our country, get prepared for service and get ready for the EVS experience, while through support systems there will be continuous updating and guidance in order to enrich their knowledge and put it in action. During and after the end of the action, the volunteers will be called to evaluate it.
Moreover, when the action will end they will be given the YouthPass, which they will fill with their mentor's help and they will use to show what they have done, that they are active European citizens and to use the information written on it when they will be looking for a job later.
Furthermore, they will learn the way that a foreign NGO is operating and the way it implements its actions. They will be inspired from the ideas of its members and they will exchange practices and opinions.
According to the subject of theirs services, they will get to know the current situation in our country, the environmental and the social problems, and they will form environmental conscience and social sensitivity.
At the same time, at the activities in which the participants will be take part, they will gain knowledge that later they will manage to use themselves. As far as the action of the "park adoption" is concerned, the volunteers will gain environmental training and basic knowledge of gardening and botanology from experienced people -specialists on the field, while they 'll learn how to organize activities relevant to the environment and its protection as well as how to make it visible to their community.
As far as the creation of the interactive moving chess is concerned, the participants will be taught chess by experienced players of the National Chess Federation. They will also learn the history and evolution of chess throughout history, the basic was of thinking on strategy games, but also ways to commute this knowledge though games, plays and creative activities.
The role of the participants will be substantial, not complementary, while with the help of the mentor they will be integrated easier in our team and they will have the same rights and part on the decision making of the life of our organization just like the rest the stuff. It is important to highlight that their service will not replace or cover any paid jobs and that the hours of their service will be ranging between 30-38 hours per week.
We will entrust them with essential responsibilities and we will provide them our guidance and our knowledge at any time. The volunteers themselves will be asked to organize activities on the subject of their service following their standards so as that they will we have an active role in their service and take on responsibilities that will help them develop their confidence and cultivate their self-awareness. Furthermore, they will learn to rely on their own powers, adding in this way to their sense of independence.
In addition, the volunteers, in straight cooperation with our organization, will contribute to the dissemination and visibility of their action and they will make known their experiences through internet and the local media about their voluntary service and the whole program of "Youth in Action".
Perfil: The volunteers going to participate in the voluntary service will be 18-30 years old.
We are interested in young people that want to meet other people, places and cultures, and they are able to adapt easily in new working environments. Basically, they have to be young people with environmental concerns, and also with interest for pedagogical and creative occupation with younger children.
They should have a basic knowledge of the English language so that the communication with the community and the lessons on Greek language will be facilitated, since English will be the basic language of communication. They do not need to have any previous training (the plan provides for their training).
Given the fact that one of the actions we will implement concerns pursuit with the environment, we would like our volunteers to have the same interest on this and to want to get trained and active on the environmental activities.
Since our second action concerns chess and the creative activities in the youth leisure time, the volunteer should be interested in chess and strategy games, and also, like to deal and play with children. In this way we ensure that our volunteers will be doing something that they will find truly interesting so that they will be able to offer with more zest and many ideas.
The selection criteria will not be associated with their place of origin, their educational level, their religion, their sexual orientation or their political beliefs, according to the standards of the European Union.
Emphasis will be given to the participation of volunteers with fewer opportunities. With educational difficulties, economic and social obstacles, geographical obstacles and cultural differences.
In an effort to give the chance to as many young people as we can to participate to this program, priority will be given to those that do not have previous mobility experience.
Our main interest is the representation of different countries in the action but also, the balanced representation of the two genders. Their willingness to contribute as volunteers through the program and their service will also be a main factor for their selection.
In a special form, made by us, alongside their basic personal information and contact details, they will also inform us about their hobbies as well as the reason they want to participate to the voluntary service.
They will describe the reason they believe they are appropriate for the voluntary service at hand, what they are capable of contributing as individuals to a trans-European and multicultural environment and the people they will cooperate with, as well as what they except to gain from this service and how this will help them personally.
The selection will be made by a three member committee based on the above criteria which they will ensure that the procedure will be open, transparent and unbiased, without discriminations.
Considering the Sending Organization we would like to cooperate with:
-We are interested in Organizations that are active on the promotion of the mobility and the active participation of the young people (especially those with fewer opportunities) at the cultural, social and environmental issues that concern the European Union.
-We are interested in Organizations that are active on the environmental field, so in the case that the participants are occupied with the "adoption" of a park, their service will reflect completely their interests and needs.
We intend to be in constant communication and connection with the volunteer's Sending Organizations since our main concern is the safe living and service of these young people in our country. Informing our partners about all the details in our plan during the whole period of the action is considered necessary from us, since we strongly believe that the success of a voluntary service plan depends to a great level on constructive cooperation between the organizations that take part in it, and for this we will ensure from the very beginning to create a relationship based on friendship, mutual support and actual communication.
