Resumo: We are looking for a Portuguese volunteer for an approved EVS project starting at the beginning of September 2013 for 11 months. The host organisation provides education, care, therapy, medical support and independence training to young people with physical disabilities. Through its activities the Trust aims to prepare the young people using its services for adult life, giving them confidence and the skills to achieve their full potential. The volunteer in this project will be actively involved in the daily activities of the School and College supporting the young people in different areas such as educational, recreational and social activities.

The volunteers’ activities in this EVS project will take place at School and College, which is part of the the organization. The School and College provides education for young people with physical disabilities, many of whom have associated communication needs, sensory impairment or learning difficulties.

The organization believes in a holistic approach and offers its students a very high standard of education as well as pastoral care, therapy, medical support and independence training.

The volunteer will live on-site at the School and College in a separate area from the accommodation of the students. The volunteer will have their own bedroom and share a bathroom and living space with the other international volunteers taking part in this project. Volunteers are provided with food at the canteen in the School and College.

Perfil: As this project is already approved this volunteer position is only open to candidates from Portugal, available to start their EVS project at the beginning of September and who are available for the full 11 months of the project. The organization is looking for a volunteer who is keen to share their time, interests and enthusiasm with others, who are motivated to work with young people with disabilities and to help them to live life to the full. The project would therefore suit a volunteer who is open-minded, friendly, committed, interested in engaging in new experiences and keen to work as part of a multicultural team. Many of the students at School and College have communication difficulties and it is therefore preferred that volunteers have a reasonable level of English in order that they are able to support these students and be fully active and gain the most from the role.
age: 18 until 30 years old

Tarefas: The role for the volunteers is to support and encourage the students at the College in their educational and recreational activities. Within the role there are a broad range of tasks for each volunteer to allow for learning and development of each individual while providing the students a good opportunity for interaction and intercultural exposure.

Volunteer’s day to day work will include assisting in the classrooms, involvement in the activities of the PE department and in all cases they will be working alongside experienced members of staff. Below is a description of the volunteer’s role within these areas: Classes may consist of anything from 4 to 12 students. Many students require assistance with their studies; this may be because they have limited mobility, sensory impairments or communication difficulties. Volunteers work alongside the students to enhance their capacity to participate in the class by communicating with the students, supporting them in classes such as music, design, IT and arts and craft, and where necessary physically acting as “the hands and voice” of the student. Time spent in the classroom helps to develop a stronger relationship between the volunteer and the students and volunteers are able to contribute in a number different and interesting ways in lesson time. Sporting Activities: Volunteers have the opportunity to assist the students in a range of sporting activities that are offered by the college. For example there is a heated swimming pool specifically designed to assist with mobility, and volunteers can assist with the swimming classes. Many of the students also practice Boccia and volunteers can also assist in this activity. Other tasks that will be carried out during the day include: guiding students to class, socialising and helping students at lunch time.
