Resumo: The city is in a Upper Austria, the capital of the district of the same name. (Basic statistics Area 35.1 km² (13.6 sq mi) Elevation 250 m (820 ft) Population 7,515 (31/12/2005) - Density 214 /km² (555 /sq mi)
The city is a nice small (but not touristic) town and the EVS will be hosted in an appartement what we have rented for her/him. Everything is nearby (small cinema, indoor and outdoor swimming pool, 2 fitness centers, many cultural and sports association are located in the city, some pubs, restaurants, every kind of supermarket, shops etc.) and all within walking distance. We can provide the EVS with a bike as well.
We are trying to look at the interests of the EVS and to support her/him as much as possible.
The public transport to bigger cities is guaranteed by buses and trains. The youth club also has a small bus which is available for the EVS as long as they have a valid driving licence.
The youth club is located around a school area and so there are many young people around. The youth centre is a meeting point where the youth can get necessary information for them and for their problems and can learn to take responsibilities for them and for the community. But it is also an area where the kids and teens can be among themselves and can communicate under informal circumstances.
Our activities are: Sports activities: at the moment mainly soccer and -in the centre- table soccer and table tennis - we organise tournaments, In summer we go swimming and biking. Our kids love to cook and eat - so we use this to bring them closer and to support communication, community and responsibility. We also do excursions on weekends and on holidays - we try to let them choose and organise their destinations by themselves.
Also traditional and religious festivities such as Christmas, Carnival, Easter etc. are celebrated in a partly modern way, so that they know and learn again or get to know what our culture consists of. We found out that this is a way to get very close in contact to our kids and teens. Further we try to find out each persons abilities and try to encourage the teen-agers to improve these abilities - we have some who are interested in photografie, in handicrafts , in painting etc.
Perfil: For the project it would be very helpful if the volunteer would be a person who is very flexible, interested in creating all kind of projects, beeing an extroverted person, because to motivate youngsters and young adults is not easy at all.
The volunteer should have a driving licence (which is not necessary but very helpful also for her/him), should have knowledge in english, a little bit German would be very helpful. A stable personality is also an advantage. As far as the leaders in this club are all females and the visitors are 70% male youngsters a male person could be (but doesn't have to be) also an advantage.
We try to have a reliable sending organisation, and this is possible as we do have many international contacts already, so the recruitment process is a very honest dialogue between us and the sending organisation. During the process we are trying to get in intensive contact with the volunteers so that we have an idea how the person is reacting to us. We are using all kind of medias and we try to use chat channels to make them feel comfortable before they come to Austria. We also try to encourage our youngsters to get in contact with them before they come. Mostly it is working.
Age: 18 until 30 years old.
Tarefas: Our volunteer can learn much about youth work in Upper Austria - especially work with migrants. She/he can attend all network meetings and if she/he wants to have the opportunity to cooperate with other youth organisations (other youth clubs or Streetwork…). She/ he will be a person who can create and realize projects with and for the youngsters.
Work in projects concerning leisure activities for young people. The volunteer should include its culture and mentality to widen the youngsters' horizon. It's very important in our youth club to work with migrant kids and to work out projects to reduce racism, i.e. organising tournaments (soccer, table tennis, volleyball..) with different youngsters (migrants and non-migrants), creative days (painting, take photographs and exhibition, cooking, helping them in learning; doing all kind of leisure activities with them), It's very important for them to do something in their leisure time and also to motivate them to do something out of the club which is very difficult. Our youngsters are sometimes very motiveless to do some activities. She/He will be our back up and will be the part that really has time for the young people and to react on their needs and wishes.
The volunteer has a lot of opportunities to do something with the youngsters. We also have a bus so that she/ he can be very flexible, which is very important for our work. We can support her/ him with all kind of materials, which is necessary to create projects.
There can be the possibility to go to secondary school and present her/his own country. We can organise everything as long as the volunteer is interested in.
EXAMPLES
Going shopping with the kids for the club, going for a walk, playing soccer, volleyball, swimming, into the cinema,- dependent on the EVS, preparing projects, doing some office work, renovating a room.
