Resumo: The association is a non-profit, cultural association set up in autumn 1994. Its name means foreign things in ancient Greek; its main objective is to increase and improve the level of contact among different cultures.
It promotes projects mainly within the frame of European Programmes – such as “Youth in Action” (EVS, youth exchanges, youth initiative ecc) , “Leonardo da Vinci” and others - with the following principal aims: promoting, through its initiatives, intercultural dynamics of learning; preventing and combating racism and prejudices; to offer young people the opportunity to join mobility programmes in the vocational and social-cultural sphere, and in schools to promote comparisons between different cultures and systems; to promote opportunities for meetings between different cultures and for greater knowledge of foreign languages in our local area.
Therefore, we are interested in issues related to intercultural learning, the prevention and fight against racism and exclusion, communication among youngsters, care of the environment, social and cultural services and the preservation of the artistic and cultural heritage.
Among the activities of the association there are:
 Sending abroad Italian participants to the Leonardo da Vinci programme: from 70 to 100 people (age 18-35) every year for a period from 3 to 5 months
 Hosting in Padua foreign peple (Leonardo Da Vinci and other mobility programmes), hosting participants from EU and non EU countries (especially South America and Balkans) for a period from 3 weeks to 6 months
 Hosting disadvantaged young people for whom the mobility projects re-enters in a larger way in the recovery and acquisition of autonomy, they are hosted for 3 weeks in Padua to take apart in a training experience, in a working field they are interested in
 Youth exchanges, mainly with EU countries, we organize 2-3 exchanges every year with a total number of 20-25 participants
 Senior project for volunteers over than 50, both in sending than in hosting , totally 6/8 person send and 6/8 person host per year.
 Follow the Women: since 2004 the association is the Italian partner in this international project that brings together about 200 women from all around the world for a bicycle trip through Lebanon, Syria, Giordania and Palestine to promote peace and the role of woman in the society. In the first 5 editions, from 2007 edition we realize it in collaboration with Fiab (federezione amici della bicicletta)
• Intercultural education workshops/meetings for high school students
 Intercultural training and activities for trainers, teachers etc., both at local and at international level
 Information and training/professional guidance for young people trough information events about youth mobility's project in youth information center in city's province area and realization of peer information meetings about it in wich the volunteer will meet youngsters interested in it
 Cultural and recreational activities at a local level, about interculturality and cultures meetings (cultural parties, meetings on specific topics, cinema nights, ethnic music and theatre courses etc.) and courses or workshop on different topic (conversation in forgeiner languages, creativity expression, music, etc).
Padua is a middle size city, with about 300.000 inhabitants situated in Veneto, about 30 km from Venice and 80 km from Verona. It is an important university centre, in fact 60.000 of the inhabitants are students coming not just from Padua but from all over Italy and from several European and extra European countries, this is why it is a city that offers several possibilities of social meeting and a lot of cultural initiatives (exhibitions, concerts, theatre, cinema, etc.)
It has a big historical centre with several famous places (S. Antonio’s Church, Prato della Valle, Botanic Garden etc.) some of these are also typical meeting points for the young people.
It is easy to reach all the city areas by bus, even if the night bus service is more limited, because of this, many people usually go around by bicycle, not just during the day, but also at night.
Padua is easily reachable by plane (the international airport Marco Polo in Venice is connected with a bus service) or by train

The association is a hosting association of the EVS volunteers since 1997, our experience in this field has been very positive for the operators of the association, for the users of our services and for the volunteers themselves
The presence of the volunteers has increased the value of the association activities bringing a intercultural contribution in every activity. The volunteers gave the chance to many of the youngsters that frequent the association to live an experience of intercultural meeting, to know the European mobility programmes and gave to a lot of them a strong motivation to participate to them.
The involvement of the European volunteer in activities addressed to young people in the territory (local activities and youth exchanges) increases the motivation and interests of the youngsters and makes their involvement and participation easier.
Volunteers not only live a multicultural experience living abroad but they also have the opportunity to improve their own practical skills, for example IT and language knowledge (Italian and other languages, considering the international environment). They can get a real “on the job” training about the work association carries out with groups of foreign young people, the organization of local events (courses, parties, training meetings, cultural nights etc.) and the managment of an association. All these skills may be very useful for the volunteer once the internship and project are finished, in the search of another job or if he/she keeps working in this field
Moreover, the volunteer will participate to specific training sessions organized by the association on topics of particular interest like groups dynamics, resolution of conflicts, multicultural learning etc.
During these last years we realized how helpful these competencies turned out to be after the end of a project, while seeking a job or in order to go on working in a similar sphere. There were many cases of volunteers who went on working as operators in their sending organization, or who found a job in similar organizations after their EVS.
The volunteer can take part in different activities throughout his/her internship, in order to allow him/her to know deeply and better all the work done by the association and to choose, after a first phase of adaptation, his/her own field fo interest. Whether there should be more volunteers in the same period, at the moment of the financing request, we will define with them the field they mainly prefer to work in, also in relation to their own education and interests.
The association’s different activities that will involve the volunteer may be divided in 3 main areas: youth information, youth mobility and local activities. Besides these (or those in which he/she will be mainly involved), an important part of the internship is the personal project that the volunteer can realize in association: he/she will be responsible for its creation and realization, according to his/her own skills and in collaboration with the staff of the association. This project, still making part of the activities realized by the association, is meant to be as much as possible related to the volunteer’s interests and background and allowing him/her to express his/her own skills and knowledge and the bring in the project her personal contribute.
The tipical tasks of the volunteers will be following:
Youth information area:
 Collaboration to the activities of the front office/information desk, open on request for people that are interested in reciving information on the european projects. The volunteer will support and help the staff in welcoming people, giving specific material (brochures, books, leaflets etc.) and, if able to speak Italian or English, answering the users’ requests giving them information
 back office work (specific search of materials regarding the projects and opportunities for young people, archiving, production of pamphlets and brochures). 10%
 Specific information sessions in festival, cultural activities, meeting (eurodesk, europedirect) schools, meetings with youngsters with the aim of promoting the mobility programmes. One of the main objectives of the association is to involve youngsters that would not normally have the opportunity to know about the possibilities of mobility programmes, In this context, the presence and the direct experience of the volunteer represents an important resource to inform the youngsters of various possibilities available to them. 10%
 In cooperation with the association members support to the youngsters that want to realize group activities. In this activities the volunteer will bring his/her direct experience, ideas and will give information on his/her country, the volunteer will also help the group both on the supply and communications/ organizational aspects (meetings, preparation of the setting etc.) and for the definition of the contents of the project. 20%
 The volunteer will work with the trainers as a support person for pre-departure training sessions for young people who will participate in long term mobility projects (mainly Leonardo da Vinci)
He/she will be involved in all the training activities (in group or individual) organised by the association for the participants of such projects. The activities are focused on the following themes: the participants’ expectations, intercultural dimension of the project, dynamics of adaptation to life in a different country, practical information about the project. The volunteer will participate in the group activities and in the following debriefing, he/she can agree with the trainers about a more active participation. 10%.

Perfil: The choice of the volunteers will be carried out based on their motivation, the interest shown for the topics that we deal with, to have an active role, so that the project will have a positive outcome. The selection occurs after a phase of communication either with the volunteer and the sending organisation during which we make sure that the volunteer has all the information necessary in order for the participant to decide weather to participate to the project or not.
All the volunteers and the sending organizations may collaborate to the project, The possibility for the volunteer to present aspects of his/her own culture, country and sending association or others in which he/she is involved, is part of the hosting project and of the volunteer’s personal project. The origin from a given country, as well as having particular linguistic or professional education, does not affect the choice of the volunteer.
Even if it is not a volunteer's choose criteria we will try, when it will be possible, to privilege the inclusion of volunteers with fewer opportunities that will gain more in term of personal development and experience from the project.
Considering the experience in this mor ethan 10 years of EVS and the different tasks that the volunteers can do in the hosting organization we think that the maximum number of volunteers that we can host at the same time with long term project is 5. Moreover is possible host bigest group , untill 15/20 volunteers, in short term projects. The project takes place in the association’s offices and in Padua and Veneto area, always under supervision and in safe and guaranteed conditions, as well as for all the staff and users. The association’s office, as the whole building, is certified for fire prevention and the safety of the workplace has just been certified, in April 2007, through a control by experts, 1 of the association's operator is responsible for the worker safety and for the fire control and there are 3 operator trained for the fist aid; the volunteer will receive explanation about safety rules and behaviours to have in case of emergency.
In any case the volunteer will be in contact with his/her tutor, to whom he/she can address for any problem, in case of not adequate work conditions.
Concerning the prevention of cultural shock and adaptation crisis, we will plan the project as much as possible in collaboration with the volunteer in order to define the activities and the common objectives before his/her arrival. This allows the volunteer to know better the project and then have fewer problems of adaptation. This will happen also as far as it concerns all technical and logistic information, if possible we will try to offer the volunteer different options of accommodation, among which he/she can express his/her preference.
Throughout the whole internship, during the working hours, the volunteer will be followed and helped by a coordinator in the association on the work aspect. Moreover, for personal and different needs, the volunteer will be frequently in contact with his/her own tutor who will advise him/her also on safety in Padua (things to avoid, recommended behaviour etc.)
The project is open only to volunteers over 18, therefore there are not special measures for volunteers under age.

Tarefas:
-Hosting foreign young people in Padua (taking part in several mobility programmes. The volunteer will be engaged above all in the planning and realisation of a cultural program that allows the young people hosted in Padua (for a period of three months) to know the city, to meet the participants to other programmes, to make friendship with Italian young people, to know the city on a different point of view. These volunteer's activities are not financed neither by the programme Leonardo nor by any other programme since this figure is not planned. The activities offered and realized by the volunteer represent for the association the association an additional value.
In these activities the volunteer will be in contact with the groups from the very first day of their arrival. This will encourage friendships and peer support amongst themselves. The volunteer will help the groups to orientate themselves, the volunteer will also follow the project in an informal way without having the responsibility of eventual difficulties and critical situations. The volunteer will be in contact with the participants to fully understand their state of mind and if they are encountering any difficulties or problems.

-In case of need the volunteer, with the tutor of the group, will carry out cultural activities also considering some specific interests that s/he can have for the duration of the whole project. The activities includes a few outings in various cities in the region of Veneto (Venice, Bassano del Grappa, Verona, Arquà Petrarca etc.) to give the opportunity to the groups to visit the localities which are very interesting culturally but are not so well known or are difficult to reach and therefore it is less likely that they would visit them on their own initiative. The volunteer will help in the preparation of the outings and will take an active part during the outings. Another part of the cultural programme will take part in the city, these activities will be: student bars nights, welcome and farewell dinners, intercultural parties within the premises of the association or within other premises, often organised with other associations of the city.

-The reason for these activities are mainly to encourage the groups and the volunteer herself/himself not only the touristic side of Padua but its real everyday life, introducing to them other local associations with whom the association has had a history of collaboration (the association of PH visual arts for the intercultural photography tour of Padua, Association Rari Nantes with whom an outing is organised along the rivers of Padua, ‘Friends of the bicycle’ for excursions by bicycle around Padua, ‘University student association’, ‘Legambiente’ with whom every so often we collaborate for specific activities, associazione la Mente Comune, that organize activity by cycling and reuse old material, Associazione la Zattera Urbana that run a center for youngster expecially from immigrants communities ).

-The volunteer will also participate in the evaluation sessions with the groups working with the coordinator and the tutor. The volunteer will help in the preparation of needed materials for the evaluations and will participate in discussions if he/she wants.

-The activities that the volunteer will conceive, propose and carry out, eventually with the help and support of the association staff, represent an added value brought by the volunteer since such activities are not included in the those foreseen and financed by the Leonardo da Vinci Programme. Nevertheless they are particularly important as they allow the participants to undertake a more complete experience in addition to the vocational training provided by the project and to fully live the intercultural dimension of the experience. His/her different point of view will allow the association staff to receive feed-backs as regards the ongoing project and inputs on how to improve it.

-The presence of a European volunteer provides the participants with a further support that, even if not foreseen by the Leonardo project, has revealed to be useful as for some aspects he/she lives a similar experience to the trainees one and can therefore better understand the participants and the problems that may arise. In some cases the volunteer can act as an informal intermediary to the participants and to the association members officially involved in the hosting and, at the same time, he/she can help the participants themselves to overcome problems and fears linked to the initial stage of adaptation to the life in a foreign country. (40%.)

-hosting disadvantaged young people for whom the mobility projects (normally of three weeks within Leonardo Da Vinci Programme but also for longer period and with different programmes) re-enters in a larger way in the recovery and acquisition of autonomy. Even in this case the volunteer will help the coordinator and the tutor of the group in the management of the group: welcoming the groups at the airport or at the train station, explanation of the rules of the project and of specific rules depending on the type of groups that are hosted, taking the groups to their homes in the city, taking the participants to their internship (if their work place should be difficult to find).

-Plan and carry out a cultural programme which may vary depending on the specific needs or on the type of disadvantaged groups might have, in this case the activities would take place in Padua or short visits (Venice, Vicenza, Monselice) with the main objective of having frequent contact with the participants in order to be able to follow up more closely their project)
The volunteer will participate in evaluations about twice a week to support the tutor and try to give advice and help the participants solving their problems regarding their project. This activity will be interesting and useful for the volunteer’s professional training, especially for who has a specific education about working with people with special needs, but for every volunteer when considering the human aspect. (20%)

- Help the association’s staff in the hospitality and integration in the local community of senior volunteers , also in this activity the volunteer will be helpfull to discover the city from another point of view , and supporting different activities of the project.

-Moreover the volunteer will participate to the realization of mobility programmes carried out by the association in collaboration with FIAB amici della bicicletta the city, others than the European ones, as for example "Follow the women – women for peace" , where the association is the Italian coordinator and that brings together about 200 women from all over the world for a bicycle trip in Middle East, or the volunteer camps which allow about 25 young people every year to live one month in a country of the South of the world (Central and South America, Giordania). The volunteer will help the staff in the preparation and promotion of materials and in the training sessions in Italy before the departure. He/she will not only help in the practical organization but will bring his/her own contribution (opinions, ideas and suggestions) and/or practical information, in the case of similar personal experiences. Local activities area

• The volunteers will be able to collaborate to the realisation of the local activities contributing with ideas and proposals based on their competencies and interests. Between the activities normally made, there are: intercultural parties with communities of foreign people living in Padua, lectures by topic, ethnic music and theatre courses, activity of intercultural education for high school students, theatre workshops on intercultural themes. The workshops will involve young people from the local community and from other countries, cultural nights on a given topic, like meetings with associations, videos showing or individual presentation of experiences and projects.

-In the sphere of local activities, the volunteer will also help with organizing courses and workshops which are activated in the association in that period and he/she will have the chance to participate in the ones which he/she is interested in. For instance, the volunteer will be involved in diffusion and advertisement of the activity; he/she will also have the chance to organize (alone or with help of some experts) some activities which aim to introduce to the local community some elements of his/her own culture or personal interests. For example, if the volunteer is interested in photography, there is the possibility to organize some workshops of intercultural photography which young Italians and foreigners can participate in, in the city of Padua and with the facilitation of experts. This workshops could end up with an exhibition which is also useful as a chance to think about intercultural themes.

 He/she will take part in the realization and the planning, with his/her own ideas, of the association’s cultural nights, that take place in the centre for all the members. These moments join fun with a presentation of a topic: videos showing about a given topic or country, presentations by members of other associations on their projects or by other people on a specific topic. In this activity the volunteer not only has his/her own space to present some topics of personal interest but he/she will also meet Italian and foreign young people and adapt him/herself easily to the local community.

 The volunteer will help in carrying out the film exhibitions which are organized in the association (1 or 2 movies per month). The films are usually chosen together with the volunteer, so that they concern some themes which are connected to the country he/she comes from, or to some themes he/she is interested in. In this way these can be a chance of sharing opinions with the volunteers. An expert often joins the film-screenings to talk about the theme developed by the movie: environment, sustainable consume, immigration, and so on, so that there’s the chance to deepen the partecipants’ knowledge about the theme. We also try to give possibilities to young free-lance authors also through the cooperation with some association which deal with video-shooting (Toni corti, pianoro factory, etc.). So the volunteers also have the chance to propose some videos, movies or documentaries made by some directors coming from his/her country (or whom he/she knows) who want that their works are screened.

 The volunteer will help with implementing photo-exhibitions, often connected with some activities implemented by the association during some youth exchanges, EVS or follow the women. In some other cases the association uses some photos taken by youngsters involved in some activities of the association. Also in this case the photo exhibition is a chance for artists to find a space to show their work or to introduce the activity which they implemented. If the volunteer is interested in photography, he/she can also organize an exhibition of his/her own photos about his/her project or about other themes he/she is interested in.

In all the 3 areas Concerning the activity that the volunteer is realizing, he/she will help the person in charge for it, moreover he/she can realize activities or small personal projects more related to his/her interests (some examples in this sense are: realization of night meetings about his/her country or association, short training course for socio-cultural animation, realization of a guide about Padua for young people participating in the youth mobility project, creation of city game used to discover Padua). The volunteer, if he/she decides to realize this project, will be supported in it by the the association staff. (40%)
