Resumo: The College is located in the town, in the province of Southern Savo in Southeast Finland. The college is maintained by the Church Resources Agency, the central organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Christian organizations of Finland (www.kirkkopalvelut.fi/.
From and to the city there are good railway connections to all distances in Finland. It is a small city situated by the lake Pieksäjärvi. There are a lot of hiking and paddling possibilities around the city. Bikes for cycling are available in our College.
The city unit of Diaconia Polytechnic (Diak) also operates in the premises of the college, and the two institutions cooperate for local and regional development. The child welfare unit Lastenkoti (Children's home, the family support centre Ruusu (Rose), and Koivuranta service centre for the elderly, all maintained by the Church Resources Agency, are located next to the college building.
For the volunteer we can offer accomodation in the dormitory where students live. Room is private, but kitchen, bathrooms, sauna, laundry and drying room are shared (common). The regulations of the dormitory are applied to the residents and visitors of the dormitory.
Our College is a main stream institute formed of a folk high school and a secondary level vocational school. Students are both young and adults. Most students study in the areas of social and health care, child care and education and family welfare. Preparatory and rehabilitating training is offered for the people with special needs (mostly young), as well as vocational training in the area of domestic services. In the College it is also possible to complete one´s basic school education. The College is a boarding school, and the aim is to integrate students also in the residence during leisure time activities.
Perfil: Assisting with different summer courses and in education and dormitory of students with special needs, also practical tasks like preparing classrooms and helping at the kitchen. Interest in education and social work is important, as well as motivation to work with people with special needs.
Age: 18 until 30 years old.
Tarefas: The volunteer will work with students with special needs both during daytime and some evenings. He/She will work as an assistant or co-worker with teachers, instructors and staff of the residence.
In the summer courses the volunteer will work in many kinds of jobs (see later “Proposed activities for EVS volunteers”)
It´s also possible, if the volunteer is interested in, working 1-2 days in the kindergarten (our college cooperates with this kindergarten).
