Resumo: The Kindergarten is committed to providing high quality based childcare, holistic education and family support services. As a community-based project, we strive for social integration.

The town is a rural multi-cultural town located in the South East of Ireland. This setting will encourage the Volunteer to gain knowledge of the Irish culture and also to expand the cultural diversity already established. The town has a population of about 2,500 and has good public transport links. There are many local clubs which the volunteer can join e.g. soccer, choir, canoeing, GAA, scouts, Tidy Towns (environment). This will be actively encouraged and the mentors will be happy to make initial contacts/introductions on behalf of the vounteers.

While the town has a large traditional community, there is also a significant number of inhabitants in the town who are non-Irish nationals. There is also 2 third level colleges in the town – one is an Arts College and the other is an Equistrian college. In the past some of our volunteers have shared accommodation with these students.

Accommodation will be in self-catering shared accommodation with other young people. If the self-catering accommodation is not available to the volunteer on arrival, for the first couple of weeks of the volunteer’s arrival they will stay with a family from the Kindergarten. They will be expected to do their own cooking and manage their own finances. The allowance will be given at the beginning of the month. If the volunteers want to open a bank account, every assistance will be given to them. It will be possible to walk from their accommodation to the Kindergarten.

The Volunteer, Teacher and Mentor will meet on a regular basis (as agreed) to ensure that the volunteer is comfortable and happy with the objectives outlined in the initial brief. The Kindergarten will make sure of flexibility of the project so that the areas the Volunteer is not comfortable with will not make this a negative experience.

Learning opportunities for the volunteer will include:
• Cultural diversity
• Language Learning
• Community Involvement
• Independent Living
• Work Experience
• Experience of working with young children
• Experience of working within a Kindergarten
• Youthpass
• Own project will be facilitated and encouraged.

It is recognised by all involved in the Kindergarten the importance of non-formal and in-formal learning and that the aim of the project from the volunteers point of view is two-fold – to help the Kindergarten provide a service and to aid the learning of the volunteer – to increase skills, knowledge and confidence. This will be done by non-formal learning – on-arrival and mid-way training while in Ireland, language course, kindergarten assistant course, craft workshops e.g. how to felt. The volunteers will also learn a lot through non-formal learning e.g. how to cook in the Kindergarten – make bread, soup, plant bulbs, paint a fence, upload pictures onto Kindergarten Facebook page, open a bank account, get public transport to Cork.

Perfil: The profile of volunteer candidates would include:
• Interested in working with young children
• Interested in the method of education and interested in learning more about it.
• Interested in Childcare/teaching as a career
• Have interests that match activities available in the city e.g. choir, art, sport
• Show an interest in taking on projects and getting involved in other community groups.
• Have shown some initiative in previous activities undertaken – some volunteering experience however short the time period.
age: 18 until 30 years old

Tarefas: On arrival in Ireland, the volunteer will be briefed on the structure of the day that is to be followed in the Kindergarten. There will be clear guidelines set out to help the volunteer understand how to participate in the activities and the Teacher will be at hand to provide support where it may be needed. The Mentor will also provide support and knowledge of the town to ensure that the Volunteer exploits all the facilities it has to offer to further their experience in Ireland.

Volunteers are actively encouraged to get involved in at least one other community group e.g. choir, soccer club, scouts as this has proven to be a very valuable source of learning for the volunteer.

There will be on-going training and personal support of the volunteer including access to the wide range of workshops and training courses run by ISKA.

Typical activites include the above – music, arts and crafts, baking, gardening and the volunteer will be encouraged to undertake a project related to the above e.g. vegetable growing, funding raising, maintenance (painting) or social media – facebook. These will be rotated during the year.

At least one in-depth review of the placement will take place during the year. The volunteers will meet with their mentors and a committee member to discuss their placement so far. The volunteers are encouraged to be open and honest. All comments are minuted and consideration given and if possible changes are made. This is also to facilitate the learning of the Kindergarten committee and to try to improve the placement going forward.
However, there will be numerous informal chats with the volunteers i.e. daily.

Horário: The volunteer will be in the Kindgergarten for eleven months helping the teachers in their daily routine and will spend approximately six hours per day there. The volunteers will be given 2 days per month annual leave.
