Resumo: The organization is located in a bilingual town of about 11,000 inhabitants situated near the Slovak capital, Bratislava. The two languages –official Slovak and minority Hungarian - are roughly equally used, though many young families move in from Bratislava as the living costs are somewhat lower than in the capital and distance is minor (11 km border to border). The town is situated in a lowland next to the Danube originally, now the water dam of the Gabcikovo Water Power Plant, that was built in the small rural outskirt of town called Cilistov. Many people commute for work to nearby Bratislava. There is a bus but no train station in the town, 3 basic schools, 4 secondary schools and about 6 kindergarten. From among the organizations, the most active ones are cultural, Slovak and Hungarian alike, an umbrella-organization of villages in waste management, various sports clubs (ball games, fencing club, wrestling club) a baby-mum club and an organization supporting low-income people and families.
The seat of the organization is situated next to the bus station of town, in the very vicinity, there is a supermarket, too, the town centre is about 5-7 minutes of walk away. The organization shares the house with 2 other NGOs, the bigger Forum Minority Research Institute (8 employees and many part-time collaborators) and the smaller Forum Information Centre (1 employee and part-time collaborators). Downstairs, the local library operates, which is managed by the Forum Minority Research Institute.
The accommodation is planned in the local Kayak-Canoe Club´s seat in the town, part Cilistov. The building is a two-storey multifunctional building serving the water tourists (store rooms, lecture or living room, kitchen, bathroom, 6 bedrooms).
It is situated on the outskirts of town (about 2 km from town centre), next to Cilistov and near to the seeping channel. There is a bike road to Cilistov next to the ordinary road for cars, so it´s a safe passageway for cyclists or pedestrians. The volunteer would get a bike to cycle in to the organization´s seat (if he prefers) or he can be picked up by car in the morning.
The water tourism centre´s guest-rooms with 2 or 3 beds each share a common kitchen and bathroom, though they are occupied only occassionally by organized events. The centre itself is busy till evening hours, the members of the club move around, do maintainance or amuse themselves. Internal rules include no smoking inside (smoking outsode is allowed), no parties and cleaning up after himself as there is no cleaning service there (the club members do the cleaning voluntarily). At the institute, the same rules apply, though there is some basic cleaning. Smoking is allowed on the terrace, private parties aren´t allowed at the institute either.
Perfil: We prefer a volunteer of longer stay (up to 12 months), in order to have enough time to build up his Local environmental projects in the town and form a core group of young volunteers for the environment. A communicative, friendly and straight volunteer will be very welcome. Concerning some type of activities (exhibition installation, canoe trips) which may include pulling heavy equipment, the volunteer position may appear to be more suitable for a man than a woman.
age: 18 until 30 years old
Tarefas: We offer the volunteer an experience to work in a nonprofit organization with inspiring and flexible people, open to new ideas and working in a friendly environment. The volunteer can learn about project and programme planning, both formally or informally, and fundraising (in the terms of project proposal preparation). The volunteer can see international or cross-border cooperation in action.
English-speaking level in the porganization ranges from poor to excellent, 4 people of intermediate level are even attending English courses.
The role of the volunteer will be, according to our expectations, to organize small groups of local young people (primary and secondary school) to implement small-scale environmental projects in the town, frequency 1 event in cca. 1 month (i.e. information campaign for waste selection, mapping of waste deposits and prepare a plan for cleanup, taking care of the town information panels, organizing thematical events in schools – debate on a topic, contest in drawing, etc., bird feeding in winter, media appearance concerning the environment, tree planting and helping take care of the greenery in town, activities for students for the Earth Day and similar). While providing the necessary background support (organizing the activities with the schools themselves in the first phase), the volunteer himself is to communicate and coordinate his emerging team. If necessary, we can finance or help in fundraising for small-scale activities and ensure the contact of the volunteer to the local newspaper to promote his team and projects.
The volunteer will be involved in the current activities of the organization with young people, which range from organized bicycle trips with environmental educational focus (in cooperation with schools, groups up to 30 people, 2-day field trips in the same topic in the region or with our Hungarian partners (Szigetkoz region) and workshops in schools with our interactive environmental exhibition about floodplain ecosystems and their birds , presentations of traditional gold-washing to student groups, etc.
For volunteers with artistic interests, we can offer participation in the local Art School´s (drawing, painting, sculptures, dance) work (about twice a week) as we maintain a good cooperation.
For volunteers interested in sports, we offer canoeing in the Danube branches and even participation in the organized local or international water tours of the local Kayak-canoe club. If there will be possibilities, he can even attend a course for water tour guides to obtain a certificate.
