Resumo: The organization is active in a wide area of the region Piemonte (northwest of Italy), especially in the provinces of Novara, Vercelli, Biella and Verbania, where the organization manages several different activities. For the proposed EVS activities we will consider the projects and services which take place in the north the province of Novara.
This is a town of about 14,500 inhabitants on Lake, in the province of Novara. Its main economic activity is tourism, especially from Milan, France and Germany. The city is 25km north of Milan's Malpensa International Airport, actually closer than Milan itself. It is also connected to the railway network, being one of the main stops in the important link between Milan and Switzerland. Due to the town's size there is no public transport, but some bus companies connect the city to the neighbouring municipalities. The city is near a confluence of motorways, and from there one can head for Milan, Genoa, and Gravellona Toce. The headquarters of the Navigazione del Lago are located in the city along with their shipyard. The city is the southernmost port on Lake, and transportation by boat or hydrofoil is available to both sides of the lake up to the Swiss city of Locarno.
Other city is located about 90km northeast of Turin and about 30km northwest of Novara. It has 20,000 inhabitants, so it's the second largest municipality in the Province of Novara. This other city is 12Km far from the city. It is connected to the railway network but has no public transport, any place can be easily reached by bicycle.
The city and the other city are rich towns, with many productive activities, the unemployment rate seems to be lower than the rest of Italy. They are rather safe and quiet towns. Especially The city offers interesting cultural activities (mainly about arts) and both towns offer a good number of social events in connection with the local traditions.
The organization main office is located in the city, very close to Lake. Five people work regularly in the administration office (accounts department and human resources department), while the rest of the workers is not always working there, since they are spread across the region because the services and activities that the organization runs are located in several villages and towns of the area (in schools, youth centres, public bodies, associations). In the office there are some computers (in a big “open-space room”) at disposal of workers and volunteers, and 4 meeting rooms, one of which is very big and allows us to organize big meetings. The organization has a second office in the other city, which is smaller and less used than the main one.
The organization has 80 members (workers), seven of them are members of the board as well.
Perfil: In general, the project is open to all motivated youth, anyway, previous experiences with groups (as group member or leader) will be appreciated in all our projects.
Those whishing to work with kids (aged 0-6) and elderly people should evaluate their ability to communicate, both verbally and non verbally. In addition, it's needed patience, listening skills, curiosity concerning this particular moments of life.
About the youth projects (13-25), it's important to be flexible in non-structured situations; moreover, relationship skills, the ability to welcome and take care of young people and to communicate with all type of young people will be very important to enter this project. Creativity will be a quality element for the project.
Age: 18 until 30 years old
Tarefas: Vedogiovan offers the participants a personal experience of growth, and gives the chance to discover a new culture and to face different realities:
working with youngsters, in Meltin Pop, and in other projects involving local youth;
working with children in pre and after school activities, and in creative workshops;
working with elderly people in clubs or creative workshops;
woking with the local community, in co-operation with youth organization and voluntary associations.
The volunteers will work in teams (from projects planning, through the implementation, to the final evaluation of it) with professional workers, and they will participate to activities which are almost always conceived for groups of people (either youth/kids or adults/elderly persons). They will become familiar with a working method called “animazione socio-culturale”, a practice that focuses on active involvement of people in social and group activities and decision making processes. It is a non-formal education method. They will be involved in a lot of events (both in the organizational phase and in the realization): workshops, music events, contests (sport, music, writing, etc.), festivals, group meetings (on several subjects), art exhibitions, and cultural events. The volunteers will be involved in the activities of the organization branches that offers services for youth, children and families.
They will be supported by professional workers in the routine activities, they will be encouraged to actively participate to all the activities and their opinions and experiences are considered a resource for the organization. The organization wants also to offer the volunteers the chance to take part to community projects that encourage active participation at all levels and of all target groups (children, youth, adults).
The volunteers will not substitute workers, they will support the organization workers in daily routine tasks and in special events. Preferably, a volunteer will be asked to follow each stage of a project, and he/she will be encouraged to be active: offering his/her point of view, proposing activities or changes, evaluating the process together with the team.
The volunteers will be involved in activities with/for youth. Melting Pop is a youth club where a good variety of activities regularly take place: music events, cultural exhibitions, youth meetings and creative workshops. There, the volunteers will act as youth workers. Melting Pop is as well a bar where the volunteers will work as peer educators, and the place is cooperating with some local organizations to manage a “social restaurant”. The “restaurant” is in Meltin Pop and it offers free meals to disadvantaged people, and “regular” meals to all those who want to sustain a social project while having lunch (paying 10€ for a full meal). The volunteers will work as waiters together with local volunteers of any age (the only paid worker at the restaurant is a young cook).
The volunteers will be involved in activities with children, mainly in after school programmes, where they will work together with educators and youth workers organizing games and creative activites for kids, as well as helping them with their homework.
The volunteers may be involved in activities with elderly people, less than in projects with youth and /or children. These activities aim at encouraging active participation and the development of new competences of elderly people through free time activities for groups of people: basic and advanced computer courses, dance, creative workshops.
Very often the volunteers will be in touch with the local community, both within the activities with youth, children and elderly people mentioned above, and in special project, when supporting a specific (youth) organization in their activities. As example we can mention the cooperation with a youth organization called “Circo Clap” a “circus” that offers events, courses and seminars to children and youth about juggling, parkour, circus performances and theatre. The volunteers will support the working team and they will as well have the chance to participate to the events/courses. (Anyway this is not a standard activity within a EVS project).
It must be known that the volunteers will “try” all the above mentioned activities and projects before fixing together with their mentor the standard working schedule, which will be based on the volunteers’ attitudes and wishes, within a compromise with the organization and the projects’ needs.
