Resumo: The residence centres, ambulant assisted living apartments and ambulant counselling services of the BHH gGmbH are situated throughout the city. The city has a population of 1.7 million and is one of the largest cities in Germany. Because of its university, its harbour and many cultural, social and tourist attractions there are many things to do in leisure time.

The residence and rehabilitation centre, situated ina a a residential district in the north-east of The city. The next underground station is a five minutes walk from the organization and from there you can reach the city centre in 30 minutes. The district itself has a good infrastructure with schools, churches, a youth centre, shopping possibilities and everything you need.

Perfil: We wish to welcome young people, who bring along their own initiative, flexibility and creativity. This is important, because during your European voluntary service you get the chance to realize your own ideas and interests. As you are working with human beings, it is important that you adjust yourself to the individual disabled person and bring along empathy. For the contact with the disabled people it is very important that you are motivated to learn German also outside the language course. If you try to improve your German the social activities in the city like theatre, cinema and tour through the town will be much more fun. It will be of advantage if you have a driving licence but it is not an obligatory prerequisite. Most of the disabled people you will work with depend on a wheelchair, so you need some physical strength, e.g. to push a wheelchair. There are two points that we think you should know about: In this project you contact people, who are in some cases severely ill. Therefore it might happen that you get in touch with issues like dying and death. In these cases you can always rely on your tutor, with whom you can talk about these issues. What we wish from you is your openness to confront yourself with these subjects. Also in this project many of the disabled residents need to be assisted when eating, going to the toilet or putting on or off their clothes. You will be trained to give this assistance, because it is necessary for activities with residents. So it might happen that you are on a day trip with a disabled person and you have to assist him or her when going to the toilet (e.g. emptying the bag with urin). Of course in these cases you will get all the help you need from staff and tutor, too.

Tarefas: The volunteer works 35 hours on 5 days per week. There is an entitlement to holidays for 2.5 days per month. Usually the volunteer works during the day, but sometimes also in the evening and during the weekend (e.g. activities like concerts, events, festivals). If there are social activities with the disabled person in the evening or at the weekend, the volunteer will be compensated with extra days off for his/her participation in these activities. The volunteer engages in different activities with the disabled people, he/she gets the necessary help from the staff. The activities are divided into three groups: Offers within the residence-centre:

 individual support of the disabled person with leisure activities, e.g. a personal hobby, reading out to the person, games, creative activities like painting

 group activities depending on the interests and abilities of the residents and volunteer

 cultural activities, e.g. visiting events that take place in the residence centre Offers outside the residence-centre:

 individual company of a dsiabled person, e.g. when going shopping, visiting cultural activities like the cinema or a concert, social activities

 accompanying group excursions in the city and the surrounding area of the city

 accompanying the residents on holiday trips Developing and carrying out volunteer projects: The volunteers are welcome to create their own projects with the disabled people according to their ideas and interests, e.g. workshops to special themes, video and photo projects, evenings that stand in the light of a special theme, internet group, presentation of their home country. It is also possible to develop projects together with other volunteers of the BHH gGmbH
