Resumo: Latvia is a country of East Europe near the Baltic sea with 2.5 million inhabitants. The hosting organization is situated in a a middle-size Latvian town located in the south-east of the state. The distance from the town to the capital Riga is 260 km, but the route is served by a regular bus and train service. Approximately 40000 people live in the town, and there a significant number of national minorities, but the largest groups are Latvian and Russian.

The town is rich in natural gifts, with many rivers, lakes and hills either within the city limits or easily reachable outside, . There is a Higher Education Institute, a Music College, an Art College, various professional schools, seven secondary schools and a professional theatre. Our town is famous for unique ceramics, handicrafts and Latgalian traditions. The Latgalian region is a lesser developed economical region in Latvia but local people try to improve this situation and develop tourism and small business in Latgale.

The town is a very diverse city, as well as 48.5% of the population being Russian, 44.3% are Latvian, 2.6% Polish, 1.7% Belarusians, and 1.4% Ukrainian. There is no better example of this diversity then at the Cultural House. Here there is an equally diverse mix of people and cultures, formed into mini societies within the house. Each one has its own folk groups and choirs which practice regularly throughout the week, and they all put on regular performances.

Tarefas: Service and Learning Opportunities
The benefits to the volunteer will be that they will grow more confident in themselves, as they will be in a consistently challenging environment, whether they are learning lines, preparing sets or rehearsing or acting in a play. They will learn to overcome personal complexes through performing in front of other people, and through this will become more confident in other aspects of their life. This will be reinforced by the fact that they will be living in a foreign country with a language and culture that is new to them. As well as the personal development that the volunteer will undergo, there is a practical aspect to this project that should not be overlooked.

The volunteer will learn about the preparation of sets, from the initial ideas stage to the actual construction and placing of set pieces. This is also true of costumes, the volunteer will be able to be part of the decision making process and learn about how to decide what costumes would be best and then how to turn this vision into a reality. As well as this, the volunteer will learn about stage lighting and its operation. These will all be invaluable skills for anyone who is looking into a career in the performance arts, or anyone who is enthusiastic about theatre and wants to learn more about the behind the scenes operation.

the activities in this project will allow them to see how theatre can be different in other countries, to experience new ideas and ways of thinking, and most importantly to see how they can use their own experience to enhance the project, to not only learn about another culture but also to teach people about how the theatre culture works in their country.

Role in the Organisation
The volunteer will spend a significant amount of time in the cultural house itself, involved will all aspects of theatre performance and preparation, as well as the regular musical concerts and performances run by the various groups in the theatre. As well as this, the volunteer will work with the local culture centres, helping to organise cultural events in te town, there will certainly be a large scale event for the local population, as well as smaller art and music events, some presentations by artists and music groups, and the volunteer will have a key role in organising these.
