Resumo: Outline the project environment for the suggested voluntary Service, including the local community where the project will take place (e.g. geographical, social and economical environment). If the host placement is located in a live-in community, please include the rules and conditions that apply also for the volunteer.

The volunteer will work in a rural community in the south of Flanders with some 16000 inhabitants and of less economical importance. There is not so much to do in the village but the organization’s activities will keep the volunteer very busy. And the town is nicely located so that it’s close to many interesting places to visit.

The local community has some experience in international relations. The organization has regural contacts with the local authorities and is represented in almost all local official advisory commitees. The organisation has more than 30 years of experience and is locally well known.

The volunteer will live in a host familiy in the region of the project and get full board and lodging.

Perfil: Please describe the profiles of volunteers you would like to receive in your organisation. Include information on how you ensure an open and transparent recruitment process as well as the overall accessibility of EVS to all young people. Consider further information about the type of Sending Organisation you want to cooperate with. This information can help the match-making between volunteer candidates, Sending Organisations and your organisation.

It is important to say that the organization can offer a lot of learning possibilities, but learning itself will also depend on the enthousiasm of the volunteer. The organisation can use the experience of volunteers especially in the fields of international work and youth work. We also want the volunteer to take initiative towards the current working situation and life in the local community. We are looking for people with a lot of energy and ready for engagement. And being ready to learn the language is very important, so the volunteer will be able to take part in the different working groups and integrate easier to the community. From possible candidates we expect a good dose of independence and a capability to deal with stress situations in an organisation that seems sometimes quite chaotic, but compensates that with a lot of perseverance. Besides what is written above, we offer the opportunity to get a clear insight into social and political processes in a friendly environment.

The necessary dose of ‘seriousness’ here is always compensated by putting things in perspective and having a lot of fun!
In the selection process our criteria are motivation, a good attitude towards learning and interest in the themes that our organisation is working with. We also look at the learning-possiblilities we can offer to the volunteers themselves. Then we discuss the candidates within the organizationgeneral committee and make our selection. First we choose the most probable candidates to suit our organisation and send them some extra questions and tasks to make. That way we can really see who is interested and suitable for our kind of organisation and then we can make the final decision.

age: 18 until 30 years old

Tarefas: - Cooperation in the youth projects: go to meetings, cooperate in actions, promotion, preparing activities, reception of youngsters, finding new ways to keep the youth group active etc. S/he can also bring in some international aspects and culture (expression, knowledge of music) to the activities.
- Cooperation in the Fair Trade store: work in the store, reception of clients, orders, promotion (this just to share the experience and together with the other volunteers) participation in the meetings of the group, studying the model of fair trade and giving reflection and critics to the group of local volunteers about their concept of fair trade.
- Practical tasks and maintenance work: spreading posters, mailing the members, working with the membership magazine, arranging and cleaning the bar, organising placement and equipment for groups, team tasks, maintenance of the garden and the house etc.
- ITC: organising the website and second hand books database and lay-out tasks (membership magazine and promotion: posters and flyers).
- Depending on the capacities and the interests of the volunteer, the volunteer can work in a project within the organisation. These projects are fixed initiatives in different areas. For example: environmental action, a water purification project in the region, an annual cultural project “reading in the spring” and the regional social forum participation. Other projects depend on the current political events. These mostly include temporary action within themes as racism, peacekeeping, gender-issues and refugees.
- Weekly organise and do preparations for the opening of the bar of the organization on friday and saterday evening.
- Making – in a creative way – promotion about our activities in the café.
- The lay-out and sending out of our (paper) magazine to the members(monthly).

Every week is different depending on what is happening at the moment. Often there is plenty of office work, but then again for example during official holidays the organization arranges a lot of activity for children, so then the volunteer will be more engaged in social activities. And for example during the months of november-december the volunteer will be spending a lot of time working with the Christmas sales: decorating the house, putting prices on products, arranging the products and the shop, serving customers etc. The work schedule of the volunteer also depends a lot on which things s/he will take initiative to work with.

The volunteer will be offered to follow a language course. Understanding the basics of dutch will make working in the organization easier and more enjoyble. Learning the language will also make integrating to the community smoother. The volunteer can choose from different possibilities, for example the current volunteer is following lessons in an evening school in Geraadsbergen.

Horário: The volunteer will work approximately 35 hours a week. Working days are from tuesday to friday, but there is also quite often possible evening and weekend work (meetings of the workgroups and helping with the youth and the children activities etc.). That is why mondays are free.
