Resumo: Project is located in a small village (138 inhabitants) in a rural hilly area in Eastern Bohemia. In the village there is no shop, pub or church, but it is reachable in next 2 villages both 3km far. Volunteers live in a rural center called House, where is also a local museum, infocenter for tourists, barn for animals and a garden. In the first floor there is a private space for the volunteers (2 one-bed room, 1 four-bed room and a common corridor), in the basement there is volunteers dinning room and fully equipped kitchen. There is a traditional oven/kiln in the central part of the kitchen, which makes the atmosphere of the room very comfortable in winter time. We have only one big bathroom and toilet, so it´s obvious that volunteers have to share it. There is a wood heater in basement.

There is accessible internet in all rooms in the house. Part of the building is presentation room and information centre for the public. This part of the house is used as a public gathering place, lecture-room, exhibition space etc. - that is why volunteers are supposed to be willing to meet public. Wash machine , copy machine, another internet access and other office equipment is available for volunteers in a former village school 200 meters far from the House, where our organisation have offices. The house is situated a bit detached from bigger towns and cities and therefore there is a problem with transportation and seclusion in general The nearest bigger town is 7 km far. Since December 2011 the bus connection to the city is more frequent – 10 times a day.

Unfortunately on Sundays and Saturdays there is no connection by public transport. Volunteers can use our bikes. Stuff at The House is willing to bring purchase and do the shopping for volunteers or they can plan a trip by their cars.

In towns nearby mentioned before is opportunity to do sport and cultural activities. Our region is eventful and especially cultural events are frequent. There is relatively high number of castles, chateaus, galleries, natural tourist attractions, cinemas, theatres and sports centers. In the city there´s an ice arena for skating, football and baseball pitches, squash and climbing centre. In Vysoke Myto there´s a swimming pool, volleyball and football pitches. There´s a popular discotheque 3 km far from The House.

The life at the House sustain of a fixed routine which needs to be done every day (taking care about animals, throwing out of snow in winter, work in a garden, …). Apart from the daily practice, there are occasional educational programs for the schools and actions for the public, where the volunteers may participate on doing traditional crafts. Some of the events are done with the help of local people, who participate in playing theatre and music. For the rest we are very open to the volunteers interests and ideas and we are ready to support their realisation if it is possible.

EVS position is not an independent work place. Volunteers are led by the staff in the daily work. But they are expected to take independently care about their private space, which is upper part of the House, take care about a good state of equipment and keep the space clean. The House yard and the garden is often visited by a public, volunteers are supposed to feel responsible for its visage. Volunteers are not at all supposed e.g. to repair everything themselves, but as the closest persons to the rural center, they should see the needs and warn about them.

Perfil: We would like to receive creative and communicative volunteers who would like to get to know Czech Republic who are interested in environmental issues, are willing to work with children and adults, who are motivated to learn new things and hand down their own experiences.

In general we don’t require any special profile of the volunteer, just a good will, open mind and interest in our activities.

We have already established a network of partner organisations, who we inform about free places. We also inform directly candidates for the project who send inquiry by e-mail. We are preparing English version of EVS project presentation on our web site.

Candidates are sent special detailed questionnaire regarding our project conditions, which tells us about their motivation and being ready for the project. The questionnaire also tells a lot about project environment to a candidate. Recruitment process is based on our long-term experience with EVS volunteers. When choosing a volunteer, we observe mainly his/her motivation, nationality to confirm a wide cultural range of the EVS community and we prefer non smokers.

age: 18 until 30 years old

Tarefas: Aims of activities are intercultural interchange of traditions, obtaining of experience with environmental friendly life in village and operation of environmental center, giving an alternative to consumer culture, enlargement of our offer and diversity our projects, thanks to volunteers’ ideas and presence.

The basic and regular duty for volunteers is care for animals (feeding, taking them to pasture, cleaning the barn, etc.) The number of animals is not big, in average there are usually 3sheep, 3 goats and dozen of hens. With this daily routine work 1-2 volunteers spend 1-2 hours per day.

Another task for volunteers is to help with gardening, preparing the rooms for educational programs, helping to run the organization. Seasonal work is another obligation for volunteers: in winter they will be preparing the wood, in summer drying hay, in autumn local fruit processing. During the whole year volunteers are taking part in organizing public event (exhibitions, concerts, craft fair, taking pictures during these events, tiding The House after events) This help is crucial for our organization.

There are also periods during the year when there is less of work for volunteers. In these cases there is an opportunity to work in our partner organisations.

Both organizations are focused on environmental activities. In Paleta volunteers will participate in public events and they will assist lectors during educational courses for pupils. They can help to prepare teaching aids, create posters and promotional leaflets, translate documents from their language to English, etc.

Frequency of cooperation depends on frequency of educational programs and public events in Paleta Oucmanice, but it should be at least once a week.

Oucmanice is the village 14 km from Kostelecke Horky. They can go there by train which takes 1 hour or by car which takes just 20 min . We are able to provide car of our employee.

Vila Sklenarka is an cultural centre, where art exhibitions, workshops, public lectures and discussions take place. Volunteers are welcome to help with organizing cultural events, their impulses are more than welcome. They can realize their artistic ambitions as well if they have any. Volunteers can work in a small tea room which is open during events. SklenA!A™ka is about 10 km far from Kostelecke Horky. They can go there by bike or by our car.

Frequency of public events and workshop isn´t so high so volunteers can help in Sklenarka once - twice a month.

This cooperation with those 2 organisations makes the visit more interesting and varied for volunteers.

Environmental education programs are going on during the school year (September –June) irregularly. Educational and public events are usually weekend events and approximately 10 per year. It depends on volunteers individual interests and initiative, but we are open to their ideas what more activities should we organize together. We gladly accept this attitude to work. Public events are usually well attended – normally about 40-50 people

Examples of environmental programs for school children: baking bread, making paper, programs about forest, water, fish, bees, wetlands, old craft, traditional folk music, landscape, land art, waste, stories of children in third world

Volunteers can also participate at all seminars, trainings etc. which are held in local training centre, but also out of Kostelecke Horky and also abroad. There are seminars on local and rural development, EU awareness and cooperation, landscape and cultural heritage, cross-border cooperation held in various municipalities in our region. Four times a year there are held international seminars in Kostelecke Horky by central on topics of volunteering, group and project leading, humanitarian development and cooperation. Twice a year there are international work-camps held in our village, volunteers can help to prepare it and lead it. About once a month there are open days for public, which volunteers can help to prepare, but also they can gain from lectures and courses of crafts, traditional techniques, excursions etc. Several times per every year we host special courses e.g. on weaving, felting, making candles, milk processing, land-art etc. Except of these courses and seminars volunteers can develop many of key competencies like communication skills, self time-management, task management and planning, conflict solving, manual skills, craft skills, geographical orientation, work with children etc.

Volunteers are included to most of the practical activities of the HO. They do (in percent expressed the time of activity in the whole project):

Help with a care about the rural center. Volunteers change their tasks in some cases which they communicate between each other. 1hour in the morning + 1hour in the evening is necessary to devote to feeding and milking animals and processing goats’ milk. Volunteers assist with repairing working tool, keep the house and its yard clean. They are taking care about the garden, process its fruits and vegetables, take care about educational field, prepare wood for themselves in winter months. (30 - 40% in summer, 50% in winter)

Assist to environmental educational programs. After introduction of methods and aims of learning, they can cooperate with our lectors in creating, preparing and assisting environmental programs for school classes or public. School classes are either coming to the House or we are going to their schools, depending on the program. Programs are held in kindergartens, basic schools or high schools. The volunteers are supported by our lectors to prepare a presentation for high schools about their countries and EVS to visit schools in order to promote volunteerism and European awareness. This activity is irregular during the whole school year. After each program there is a time to evaluate it with the lector.

Basic structure of the our educational programs is already done, but there is always a possibility to modify it. This can be an opportunity for volunteers. Their ideas and different point of view we can implement into program structure. We can also prepare together with volunteers English versions of worksheets, which should be a great contribution to our programs, because it is the way how to include a CLIC methods into our educational programs. In this case volunteers can be also a cooperating lectors for English part of the program.
Another possibility how can volunteer contribute to our programs are programs on global topics - environmental problems in global context. In these programs we can use volunteer´s experience and knowledge. (15 - 20% in spring and autumn 10-15% in winter)

Assist with organization of days for public and workshops. The actions are held once a month with environmental, craft, traditional, international or other topics in the House and their aim is to actuate, educate and entertain local public. Volunteers participate on these days and workshops, they have a possibility to learn traditional crafts etc., but they can also prepare their own program and come up with their own ideas as was said before. (10 - 20% whole year)

Volunteers can come with their own project like an event for local public, some environmental topic or anything else. After a consultation with HO they can have a time and support to realize it. (10-20% same percentage during a year)

Language course at least 1,5 hour 2times a week or according to the volunteer’s communication with the lector. (15% whole year)

Participate on meetings and planning process of HO. (5% whole year)

We have a meeting every Monday in the morning when we coordinate and plan our activities for a week. Once a month we have a main meeting where are all stuff and boss and we talk about strategy, future plans and all organization problems. Volunteers will participate on meeting every Monday. They will have short meeting with coordinator every morning at nine o´clock. Regularly they will cooperate with our two lectors, coordinator and with one assistant, whose job is a care of animals.

Example of a typical week:

Mo: 9,00-12,00 - work at garden/rural center, 13,00 – 16,00 - craft course
Tu: 9,00-12,00 - help with a program for childrenr, 13,00 – 16,00 - Czech lesson, craft work
We: 9,00-12,00 - cleaning of the yardr, 13,00 – 16,00 - work at garden/rural center
Th: 9,00-12,00 - Czech lesson, preparing of woodr, 13,00 – 16,00 - help with organization of a workshop/day for public
Fr: 9,00-12,00 - meeting, plan for the next weekr, 13,00 – 16,00 - help with organization of a workshop/day for public

During the activities the volunteers get support from staff, they can communicate in English. For matters beyond activities in organization they have support of mentor.

In workshops and days for publics naturally arises opportunity to come together and integrate the volunteer to local community and to interchange intercultural experiences. That has an influence to the relationship of the local people and the incomer.
