Resumo: Outline the project environment for the suggested voluntary Service, including the local community where the project will take place (e.g. geographical, social and economical environment). If the host placement is located in a live-in community, please include the rules and conditions that apply also for the volunteer.
The hosting organization is located in a beautiful landscape. The town is a big city well known for his mediaval town, his artistic culture and his good university. It is situated in the northern part of Belgium.
The house of the organization is located in the building of the the old abbey. This is a mediaval abbey very well renovated. It has a huge garden. Today it is used for a retreat and training house for 150 people and has every year more then 120 000 guests, there are living 3 families in the Oude Abdij, 1 Jesuit community, several offices of organisations and the community-house of the organization.
The organization has his own compartment with his own entrance and facilities (phone, internet, door, kitchen, living room, sleeping rooms, bathrooms,…).
We’re especially looking for a volunteer who would like to live together in the community house with people with learning disabilities and with people without learning disabilities. That means that the volunteer becomes an essential part of the daily life of the other house members. Therefore it is important to know that we have a proper philosophy. We are a Christian orientated community. This means that we find it important that people who share (a part of) their life with us are open on this choice. This does not mean that the volunteer must be a Christian too, but he must be open on our choices and life-style. In the other Arkgemeenschappen, we have a lot of new volunteers and we have the experience that an open mind is enough to understand each other.
The volunteer needs to be aware that our ‘living together’ project is very intensive. It means that the ‘work’ project is located on the same place as the ‘life’ project. The volunteer has his own private room but the other rooms (bathroom, living room, kitchen, etc) have to be shared with all the house members. Another reality of a live-in community is that it is not always easy to make a distinction between work and free time. We will help the volunteer to find a good balance. The house and community rules/agreements can also affect the personal area (no smoking in the house, inform and plan when you invite guests to stay for a few days, etc.). As we do make a clear scheme for the day and the week, the volunteer will have a clear space to fill in with personal free time and free days. We also stimulate/encourage and support the volunteer in developing a network of friends and contacts outside the house.
For the sake of the people with learning disabilities we need people who are able to say no to drugs, who can handle with alcohol and who’s lifestyle is suitable with their need of security and support.

All we ask is an open mind … a person who is able to look and to listen to how community life is organised. We are open for people with a creative attitude. We always want to learn from other point of views and thereof we give a lot of space to our volunteers to share their ideas.
We also expect the volunteer to be motivated to learn Dutch, as this is the language we use in daily life (with the people with learning disabilities, with the team of assistants and volunteers, with the friends of the community).
For the sake of the people with learning disabilities we need people who are able to say no to drugs, who can handle with alcohol and who’s lifestyle is suitable with their need of security and support.
We prefer to work with sending organization who know the volunteer they are sending. It is important for us to keep contact on a regular bases, also once the volunteer is on our project.
If the Sending Organisation gives us the contact details of a candidate volunteer or the candidate volunteer contacts us directly, we send the information about our project and we send the story of an old-EVS-volunteer (of another) Arkgemeenschap. We ask the volunteer to write a motivationletter why he is attracted in our project. On the basis of this motivationletter, we have a phonecall with the volunteer. In the phonecall we talk about the motivationletter and we can start to get to know each other. Questions can be asked. If possible, we ask the candidate-volunteer to visit a l’Arche community within his own country (optional). We ask the candidate-volunteer to contact one of our currunt volunteers, we give the phone number and email address. If the volunteer and the Host Organisation find an agree, we take contact again with the Sending Organisation. We fill in the EVS-applicationform .
age: 18 until 30 years old
Tarefas:
Volunteers do not take the place of payed professionals (assistants), but are coached and supported by them in learning a good pedagogical attitude and grow in their capacity to take responsibility. The volunteer has never a final responsibility.
The volunteer will be ‘coached’ by the director. Weekly there is a team meeting in which the volunteer will be supported. In the team meeting every assistant/volunteer can share his positive/negative feelings. There are various other places where the volunteer is able to share and exchange experiences and talk about difficulties (foyer meeting with the house members, team meeting,…). After three months, the volunteer is involved in the pedagogical follow up of each individual person with a mental disability; this meeting is together with an orthopedagogue.
Volunteers and new assistants from l’Arche in Belgium and the Netherlands get the opportunity to meet two times a year for training with the possibility to share and exchange experiences.
The volunteer has two consecutive days free every week. Once a month the two free days are a complete weekend, starting on Friday evening till Sunday evening.
On a year basis, the volunteer has 24 days of holidays. The period will have to be discussed within the team. We motivate the volunteer to live the Christmas period within the community as this is an important time to share in l’Arche.
If the volunteer has a driving licence, he can ask to use a community car (if available, and payable) in the free time to meet people or to go to other towns in Belgium. There is also a good public transport network (bus, tram, train) to travel around in the neighbourhood and in Belgium.
The volunteer receives 105 euro pro month pocket money for his own needs. Living in the house (bed and meals) is provided by the project. On free days the volunteer can use the kitchen/ (including the food) to prepare his own meal. On holidays we give the volunteers a fee for his food (8 euro/day).
