Resumo: The objective of the EVS isn´t to perform the work of the teachers, but to enrich the daily routine of the school. The teaching team is built up of a teacher, a second pedagogical person and sometimes a special pedagogue, so that the volunteers are not needed for the daily routine. The Montesssori School works without marks, tests, and pressure to perform, so that the children can develop themselves according to their "Innerer Bauplan" (Inner blueprint) as Montessori describes it. The children work together in mixed age classes (class 1-3: 4-6;7-9; 9-10; 11-12).
The volunteers offer special activities which are normally not included in the curriculum. For example: juggling workshops, acting sketches, story writing/telling, and cooking ( often this offer is also made by parents of the school.) It is not extraordinary that these offers are made during the normal school time, this is the concept of the Montessori School.
In the optional afternoon activities or in the daycare, the volunteers have many possibilities and opportunities to develop and offer longer-term projects. Projects volunteers realized in the past were: cooking and baking workshops with dishes of their home-countries, roleplaying games, plays in English, Spanish or French, traditionall dances from their home country, conversation-workshops, film-projects, basketball and taking part in school exchanges.
Moreover, during the stay of the volunteer the pupils and the team are offered the opportunity to develop an interest in Europe, its policies and opportunities.
The volunteers themselves experience and learn a lot about Germany, German culture, standards, values and pedagogy. They also have a chance to learn and to manage dealing with children with mental and/or physical disabilities.
The team from the Montessori school consists of 50 people (teachers, specialised teachers, nurses, educator, social-workers). As it is quite difficult for the volunteer, especially in the beginning, to orientate her/himself in such a big team, he/she will be assigned to one teacher and class to work with especially at the beginning.
The children and youngsters work mainly in the form of individual work, which means that they chose different materials and try to use them to make up various tasks. The teachers have roles of tutors; they support the children and give them help when needed. The volunteers have the chance to get to know the materials and pedagogy of the Montessori School, they can practice different teaching styles and are free to develop their own approach.
