Resumo: The hosting organization works under the aegis. As such, it is the nucleus from which the society grew into its modern-day form. The Institute communicates a wealth of information about "foreign" cultures as well as developing and maintaining contacts in numerous other countries.

The main element supporting this work are the thirty bilateral country circles each run by honorary officials. Thanks to their workshops, talks, forums, concerts and exhibitions, they facilitate encounters and convey knowledge about life in other countries in Europe and throughout the world. Native and members of the ethnic communities are actively committed here. The Institute beleives that each and every new volunteer from a European country represents a further opening-up and enrichment of our transnational work. Input from these volunteers in the form of their experience in the "homeland" or as suggestions for the future are not only welcome but also integrated into our work.

Located on the periphery with 600,000 inhabitants offers a wide variety of economic and cultural life. Over the last fifteen years, this former Hanseatic town – which until the 1980s was known as an industrial location typical for coking plants, steelworks and breweries – has transformed itself into a city of service firms and high-tech companies, a centre for tradefairs, exhibitions and congresses.

The city today is also shaped by the University with 24,000 students and the multicultural lifestyles of numerous nationalities. The range of leisure-time things to do is truly wide-ranging. Museums, concerts, parks, gardens, art exhibitions and a large variety of cultural activities for the young all go to show that the toen is a youthful and vibrant city.

The town is also known for the cross-generational love of its famous football team, and for the open-minded attitude of the people.Nevertheless, the city is not alone in being faced with social problems, integration difficulties, high unemployment and structural and environmental issues.

Tarefas: Through their involvement in country group work the volunteers are able to gain practical knowledge and intercultural experience with German and foreign cultures.

Personal learning experience and learning opportunities in the Intercultural Academy:
The volunteer supports the head of the country group with the planning and running of events. In doing so they learn how to prepare and succesfully bring to a conclusion events such as slide shows, discussion rounds, talks and lectures, the so-called country weeks, dance and music evenings. The continual presence of a permanent member of staff ensures the tasks and the learning experiences are individually adjusted to suit the volunteer. Together with their tutor the volunteers themselves can determine the level of work; this may stretch from simple tasks of a manual or technical nature to flexible organisational tasks. The scope of work is very diverse so that they can choose to focus between areas of organisation, medial support or technology, applying their own abilities and their competence to the task in hand.

In their encounters with voluntary staff of varying nationalities they become familiar on the one hand with cultural similarities and differences and on the other hand they benefit from the political, geographical and cultural knowledge imparted by the events themselves.

It is the hope of the heads of the country groups as well as the Intercultural Institute that the volunteers bring in their own ideas for events which they can organise themselves under supervision. So far examples of such would be the organisation of a reading event concerning the volunteer’s country of origin, the organisation of a lecture which they themselves could hold on the political situation in their country or the situation of young people, the planning and organisation of a youth education trip for volunteers from NRW to a European country, the writing of reports on events, the (assisted) carrying out of events on the subject of the European Voluntary Service and subsequent organising of these on their own, the developing of their own events for the country weeks.

Being given a new stimulus is something the country groups really appreciate, since up to now their voluntary work has tended to be organised mainly by older people. More importantly, however, is the fact that the volunteer should experience that there is a demand for their knowledge and their understanding of culture, that they can be a source of benefit and cultural enrichment for others.

The volunteer takes part in team meetings in the Intercultural Institute at least once a week and through this also becomes familiar with the planning and organisation details of intercultural work. On top of this they can get involved with the planning and running of Intercultural Academy seminars and excursions to Berlin, Strasbourg and Brussels for young people which pick up on and convey the issue of European integration.
Learning opportunities in the local community
The volunteer will get to know the people and institutions in the region connected with their topics.

If they so wish, they can later organise their own events, together with the tutor, to make the European Volunteer Service and its learning opportunities more public within the region. These may for example be EVS information events in the Institute or at schools, at the Job Agency, at European meetings in the City Hall, etc. At these events the volunteer can present “their EVS”, pass on information about their own country and the EU, offer peer-to-peer EVS counselling, compile, produce and distribute brochures and flyers, etc. This should also encourage contact with people of the same age. By presenting their own commitment they should inspire other young people to get involved on a voluntary and intercultural basis in Europe.

The great number of contacts from the events, the meeting activities for EVS participants, the numerous language students from all around the world as well as the accommodation in shared apartments or a lively hostel all go to ensure the successful integration of the volunteers. It goes without saying that the volunteers receive a place on one of the Institute’s own language courses.

The tasks are divided up as follows:
1. Project-oriented support – according to the interests and abilities of the volunteers – to the voluntary country group leaders in the planning, preparation and executing of projects, for example slide shows and discussion meeting, talks and lectures, country weeks, readings, dance and music evenings, concerts by various nationalities, etc. Furthermore they have the choice of focussing their involvement on organisation, medial support or technology. The volunteers here each receive their own areas of responsibility. (35%).

Examples:
They assist the country group leader with evening programmes, concerts, museum nights, country weeks or culture days, with benefit performances such as "Help for Japan", the 60th anniversary of the German-Italian Society, the Chinese Moon Festival, talks such as "USA – from World Police to Peace Angel" (Gerald Baars) or "Obama" (Thomas Roth), "Health in Asia", with a Tatra exhibition, a theatrabile-theatre piece, the German-Polish crime thriller festival, international Christmas celebrations, a European week, for example "Turkey and Europe" and an international week. The volunteer also gets the chance of becoming familiar with the work of the head offices for the North-Rhine-Westphalian Parliament Programme on Encounters and Exchange of Young People with Israel and the internet portal displaying youth encounter measures supported by sponsors from NRW and Israel. An example of this is the research on current encounter measures with school and non-school youth exchange programmes.

Example of preparation: With the aid of organisational planning (spatial planning, technology, sequencing of events), compliling and sending information material, creating flyers and posters, preparing for guests, including sending invitations, looking after guests, preparing rooms, setting up/designing the sites, helping coordinate times and dates, etc., and possibly taking on the role of presenter at the event or other tasks;
and execution,
Example of execution: Acting as a contact person and being responsible for looking after guests of various nationalities, or fetching and carrying and attending to sound, light or general equipment (under supervision), providing catering support, acting as speaker for young voluntary staff;
After an induction period it is possible to take on tasks of more specific content, for example planning and coordination of a programme, writing reports on events, attending country group meetings and much more.

The volunteer should be able to bring in their own specific strengths and interests and select their own points of focus.
(35%)

2. Carrying out their own project on the subject of "We Europeans"
For example a manual/technical project, giving a talk on a situation in their own country, organising a reading event, writing an article in the members’ magazine, planning and running their own EVS infomation events, organising meetings between German and foreign students, etc. Here it is a question of expressing their own ideas on the subject of "Learning from one another". The volunteer is motivated within the framework events and the country weeks (mentioned under 1) to develop and implement their own ideas, under supervision (35%).

4. Assisted organising and acompanying of seminar excursions to Berlin, Strasbourg and Brussels on the subject of “European Integration” and German-Israeli youth exchange, for example identifying places to visit and organising the visits themselves, collecting material, acting as a contact person for the participants, assisting the team leader during the event, according to their personal interests. (10%)

5. Office support (telephone, preparing invitations, etc.) (5%)

6. Further training in the course of attendance at public events by the Intercultural Academy, according to personal choice. (5%)

7. Attending EVS information events (prepararing and bringing them to a conclusion). The volunteer can also get involved with a project planned to bring young people and disadvantaged persons in the region to the EVS (10%)
The target group in all areas are voluntary workers who want to get active in working towards a Europe without borders.
Participants are of course expected to attend team discussions and work introduction programmes.

The volunteer will be accompanied by a permanent member of staff and a tutor who will support them on all issues. An evaluation will take place once a week.
