Resumo: The hosting organization is situated in the center of the city. It is an important contact point for people in need and is therefore always crowded. The city is one of the largest city in Latvia and is situated in a beautiful environment. A large beach and the open sea are only a few meters away and the atmosphere among young people and in the city is very enjoyable. But the city is also fighting many problems like unemployment, drug addictions and poverty. The city used to have a vital economy but these times are now almost over. The city is very far from the capital of Latvia and therefore can not profit from Rigas wealth and job opportunities. The city now has an unemployment rate of 20 %, one of the highest in Latvia.

The volunteer will work in the building of the organization mostly. It is a large house with many rooms that are used as a medical help center, a clothing chamber, an office and meetingrooms. The house needs some renovations but through fundings by european partners it is developing steadyly. The volunteer will be around the people that come to the organization for help but will be supported by the employees of the organization.

The main function of our future volunteer will be the intensive engagement in the field of youth work. We want to establish a place where young kids and teenagers spend their time and feel welcome. The children of the city should have the opportunity to take part in freetime activities, learn languages, visit a summer camp and learn different arts without having to pay for it. The activities the volunteer will introduce will depend on the skills, hobbies and experience of every volunteer.

The pastor of this church has german, latvian and english roots and is a very helpfull contact person as well. He had build up the Diakoija in the city many years ago and helps people warmheartedly.

It is manly through his initiative that the organization started working with disabled people who are still not equally part of the Latvian society. The working place of the volunteer is a very liberal and openminded community. People of all minorities and the outcasts of society are always welcome.
Since the econmical crisis even more people need the help and support of the organization and more voluntary help is needed.

Volunteers working in this project environment will be developing in a very important non-formal learining process and hopefully carry their experiences for a long time.
The volunteer will live in a room of a student community and will have to communicate the rules of living together with his or her flatmates. Also the volunteer will receive a monthly budget for food of 150 Lats.

Perfil: - age: 18 until 30 years old
- open minded and caring
- willing to learn how he or she can work with disabled people, homeless people or youngsters/kids.

Tarefas: The volunteer will get an insight on social work and the difficulties that social institutions are facing. He or she will learn about tolerance and respect and about working in a team. The volunteer will also get to know a lot about Latvia, its society, its friendliness, its culture and the history. These experiences and the knowledge the volunteer will gather are not taught through a direct, formal way but will be communicated in every day situtaions by interacting with employees, group members, other volunteers, friends of the organization and people the volunteer will meet on the street.

By getting the opportunity to talk to people of all kind of age groups and different backgrounds he/she will learn the latvian language (supported by language classes 2x a week) and become socially involved.
The volunteer will be integrated into running activities of the organisation but will also create own ideas and projects.
One of the aims is, that the volunteer and helpers will arrange a summer camp for young people in order to support the youth work. Therefore he/she will need some time for research and planning.

The role of the EVS volunteer in the organization will be to support the social work and bring new input and innovation to the projects. He or she will also represent the European idea and make it easier to understand the diversity of cultures.
