Resumo: Outline the project environment for the suggested voluntary Service, including the local community where the project will take place (e.g. geographical, social and economical environment). If the host placement is located in a live-in community, please include the rules and conditions that apply also for the volunteer.

The hosting organization is located in the historical city centre of the city, in the red light district. The red light district attracts all kinds of different people. Every day there are a lot of tourists, who want to experience the vibrant atmospere of De Wallen. At the Wallen you can find many cafés and restaurants, as well as small ‘creative’ shops and a Chinese buddhist temple. But this ‘prostitution area’ also attracts a lot of people who are on edge of society, such as (foreign) prostitutes, addicts, people with financial problems, illegal immigrants and homeless people. Amidst the temptations of sex and drugs, the organization is a safe place for everyone who needs it. The organization community currently consists of approx. 60 people, from 15 different countries. The main building of the community is located at the city, but is not large enough to house all the community members. So the community also owns several other buildings in the same and a neighbouring street.

The volunteer will live at one of the community buildings in the city and will have his/her own room. The kitchen, living room, toilets and bathrooms are shared with the other community members. The city offers a huge variety of cultural events, sport facilities and opportunities to go shopping or sightseeing. The volunteer’s supervisor and mentor can guide the volunteer in finding free time activities. In the Netherlands, it is common to cycle everywhere, so a bike will be the volunteer’s main form of transportation. The city has train connections to all other major Dutch cities as well as the airport.

The community also has its own outdoor centre on the countryside. The environment of the outdoor centre is completely different from that of the hosting organization. It is a small farm located in a small village (800 inhabitants) in the north of the Netherlands. It is surrounded by dairy farms, so all around the outdoor centre there are green fields with grazing cows. At centre you can find sheep and chickens, as well as a vegetable garden and different kinds of fruit trees and bushes. It is run by an elderly couple, who are actually the founders of the organization.

All community members and guests of the our organization are welcome at the outdoor centre. They can help out with the farm jobs, but also take some quiet time for reflection. But the centre is also open to people from outside the community, regardless of their background.

Living and working together as a Christian community is an important part of the volunteer experience at the hosting organization. We therefore ask of the volunteer to be an active part of the community during his/her service. This includes doing household chores (going shopping, cleaning up after meals, cooking etc.) and attending community activities. The volunteer needs to be willing to spend part of his/her free time with the community.

As mentioned above the outdoor centre is a Christian community, which has been inspired by many different ways of believing. The volunteer does not have to be Christian him/herself, but we expect to volunteer to be open to faith-related matters. The volunteer is expected to attend (and prepare!) morning & evening prayer and other faith-related activities of the community

Perfil: The organization is part of the Protestant Church voluntary year. To participate in this programme in the volunteer needs to
- be between 18 and 30 years old
- have a strong motivation to do voluntary work
- be willing to live in a different country and to learn Dutch
- be part of a team/community and work together
- be respectful towards the Christian faith, as well as other beliefs and religions

Specific volunteer profile for the placement at the organization:
- interested in living and working with people with problematic backgrounds, being open to them and willing to listen
- committed to living and working as part of a community
- affinity with the organization’ vision of inclusive living and fair chances for everyone
- good social skills (talking, listening)

Tarefas: The tasks vary from project to project but you will be a part of the team and help the team in their work in the projects. This could be something as simple as serving coffee and listening but it could also be running an after school club for kids. In the house you live together and this is an important aspect of the year. You don't get an individual allowance for food but you get a shared budget. Every night one person from the group takes it turn to cook for those who are not working. Every week you have a household task such as cleaning the kitchen, bathroom etc. There is also a house meeting once a week, a moment of reflection and every Sunday night is a house night where we do something together.
