Resumo: Working and living in a field research station in an eastern Aegean island is a unique experience. When one plans to do so, he or she needs to make sure that he or she can enjoy living with simple facilities and close to nature. The living conditions consist of shared single sex dormitories and rooms for the volunteers as well as communal bathrooms and kitchen facilities, with some of the meals prepared by our staff and others prepared jointly by volunteers. Ingredients for all meals are provided and there is always access for the volunteers to the cooking facilities. Cooking and cleaning duties are also shared among those living in Archipelagos accommodation.

The accommodations are adequate, though basic, as they involve living with other volunteers in a personal space that may be smaller than what s/he is used to back at home and with small discomforts due to the change in setting from what one is used to. There are many people who cannot cope with this way of life and should not pursue such a placement, but those who enjoy it find it a rewarding experience. The way of life with Archipelagos is neither extreme nor dangerous; rather, it is simple with a central focus on enjoying and appreciating the surrounding environment. We place our emphasis in the living quarters on being close to the nature that we aim to study and protect.
All volunteers of Archipelagos are expected to present and conduct themselves in a professional manner when performing their job duties and responsibilities. In order to represent Archipelagos properly, volunteers are expected to dress neatly and appropriately and to conduct themselves politely and with decorum when interacting with local communities, authorities, state officials and any others with whom they may have contact. This is extremely important, as each of our volunteers becomes a face of Archipelagos in the local communities. Archipelagos volunteers are obliged to render honest, efficient, and courteous service throughout their tenure with Archipelagos. As an environmental organization it is necessary for our volunteers to understand and implement certain related ethical and moral standards.

In compliance with Greek and E.U. Law, Archipelagos forbids the involvement of volunteers in the manufacture, distribution, dispending, possession or use of a controlled substance during their participation in Archipelagos' activities. Alcohol abuse is prohibited. A volunteer whose use of alcohol affects the reputation of Archipelagos to the local communities will be disciplined, including suspension or termination.

There is a lot of work, which is useful and for a good purpose. It is essential for people to collaborate and create a good working atmosphere. By this, Archipelagos' team will be able to carry on the effective and respected work. Be aware that there are large numbers of applications for the volunteer placements, therefore Archipelagos expects successful applicants to make the most of their opportunity. From past experiences, those who joined intending to have a relaxed experience in the Aegean without contributing to the serious work of Archipelagos, could not fit within the team, and were hence requested to leave. All team members work very hard and consequently Archipelagos expects productive work from all those who join the organisation.

Perfil: Recent graduates and students of various science and arts/media related fields.

Tarefas: The volunteers' service is compatible with the EVS' qualitative criteria, since the volunteers will be involved in activities for which they will receive the appropriate trainin and support, both personal, linguistic, as well as in relation to their specific work responsibilities. For this purpose a volunteer's mentor will be appointed, who will monitor closely the progress of the voluntary service, as well as a supervisor with which the volunteers will be in daily contact and communication for all maters related with their work as well as with their live overall in the hosting organisation.

Alongside this, Archipelagos as a host will ensure safe, decent living and working conditions for volunteers throughout the course of their voluntary service.

The role and responsibilities of the volunteers', are determined based on the profile of each volunteer and according to these criteria the selection of the volunteers is made. Activities that volunteers may be asked to participate in include:
1. Participation in the collection of scientific data related to the biodiversity of marine / terrestrial ecosystems of the Aegean.
2. Contribution to environmental protection by assisting in research groups.
3. The design, development and implementation of environmental awareness campaigns, which will include a variety of issues, and will utilise all the knowledge gained by the volunteer.
For the better implementation of voluntary participants, but also for the general support of volunteers, a learning plan will be established and followed throughout the duration of their participation, so that all work and training is structured.

Through the voluntary work, new participants will be in close contact with the local community as the whole approach of the Archipelagos requires close cooperation with local communities.

The benefit to the local community is undeniable, since the actions involving volunteers are aimed at protecting the natural environment and public health as well as informing and sensitizing local communities to the environmental issues around them

Job substitution will be avoided based on the fact that the volunteers' work is complementary, supporting the host organisation's permenant staff. For the implementation of this work the host organisation always seeks for voluntary support and not for payed staff.
