The employment is very important for the village. The distance from the village to the city, is 10 kilometers and is easy to do with public transport. Gent, in the 16th century the most powerful city next to Paris, is now the lively core of a large area (population: 350.000) with a historic centre which breathes out history and sociability. Cosy corners are alternated with pleasant and busy shopping-streets. The village has also lots of facilities. Especially the variety of sport activities is well developed. In the community you'll find anything you need in local shops and supermarkets.
The project takes part in and around the campus. Most of our clients are living on and around the campus and had there work and leisure time. Depending on their possibilities and interests some of our clients are working and takes parts at the leisure time activities in the local community.

We want to coöperate with maximum 2 volunteers at the same time. The main activities for both volunteers is supporting the leisure and work activities of our clients. Tarefas: Project 1: Weekendactivities are limited (maximum once a months)
Project 2: Twice a month the volunteer will work during the weekend (Saturday & Sunday) but this means that he/she will have 2 other days off during these weeks (Proejct 2).
In addition to the public holidays the volunteer also has 20 days off.
The activities that needed to be supported are very various.
Project 1:
1. Horseback riding
Within the program of the clients recreational horseback riding acquired an important place. Horseback activities have different goals: physical (it improves fine motor skills, wheelchair skills and the standing balance), motivational (it increases exercise), mental health (it increases verbal interactions between group members, attention skills and self-esteem).
2. Leisure activities
The leisure program of all clients is tailor made. Starting from a client's individual demand and expectations and using all existing infrastructure clients can select their leisure activities.
The leisure activities are complementary to the day care activities and the supported employment activities of the clients with a moderate and severe mental disability. For clients with a profound mental disability these activities are complementary to the support activities they get from their educators. The leisure activities have a surplus value for their daily life because it broadens their social contacts and social network.
Project 2:
Depending o the interest and the possibilities of the volunteer there are 3 possible "targetgroups": adults with a severe and deeply mental disability, aged persons with a moderate and severe mental disability or more younger adults with a moderate mental disability living in a normal house next to the organisation.
We start with a kind of introduction period. In this period the volunteers is supporting together with the educators the persons with a mental disability in the living unit(s). In this way you can get the opportunity to make contact with the client in their own and safety environment. Together with the educators you take part to the leisure time activities organised in and around the living unit. You also get the opportunity to support the educators in some other aspects like supporting the meals and other elementary taking care moments.
After this introduction you can take part step by step and in cooperation with the clients in the working and leisure time activities outside the living unit without the support of the educators but with the support of the persons responsible for these activities.
The activities that needed to be supported are very various. In the leisure time we speak about swimming, dancing, snoezelen, go-car riding, massage, trips, music, …..with one or more clients together. In the working time it concerns supporting of activities like art '(soap stone, painting, …..), working on our little farm, handcraft (candle and card making, wood, ) or semi-industrial activities.
In both projects the volunteer gets the possibility to organise some new activities builded on the interests of the clients. It can be activities for one person on for little groups. Sometimes the volunteer will be invited to take part also to the preparation and the organisation of some bigger activities for all the persons with a mental disability living in the organisation (dance festival, barbecue, game without frontiers, trip, circus, sports,.…).
Horário: In general the volunteer works 6/7 hours a day during 5 days (30-35 hours/week) and this between 9 PM and 6 AM (can be different depending on the needs of the clients) with a little difference between both projects concerning working in the weekend
Formação: Volunteers will be given any training necessary for them to carry out their tasks. Efforts will be made to help the volunteer integrate into the local community and in the work (language course)
Volunteers will attend the on-arrival training organised by the National Agency as well as nationally organised mid-term meetings.
