Tarefas: The role for the volunteers is to support and encourage the students at Treloar College in their educational and recreational activities. Within the role there are a broad range of tasks for each volunteer to allow for learning and development of each individual while providing the students a good opportunity for interaction and intercultural exposure.
Volunteers day to day work will include assisting in the classrooms, involvement in the activities of the PE department and in all cases they will be working along side experienced members of staff. Volunteers may also be involved in activities of the therapy department. Below is a description of the volunteer’s role within these areas:
Classrooms: Classes may consist of anything from 4 to 12 students. Many students require assistance with their studies; this may be because they have limited mobility, sensory impairments or communication difficulties. Volunteers work alongside the students to enhance their capacity to participate in the class by communicating with the students, supporting them in classes such as music, design, IT and arts and craft, and where necessary physically acting as “the hands and voice” of the student. Time spent in the classroom helps to develop a stronger relationship between the volunteer and the students and volunteers are able to contribute in a number different and interesting ways in lesson time.
Sporting Activities: Volunteers have the opportunity to assist the students in a range of sporting activities that are offered by the college. For example there is a heated swimming pool specifically designed to assist with mobility, and volunteers can assist with the swimming classes. Many of the students also practice Boccia and volunteers can also assist in this activity.
Other tasks that will be carried out during the day include: guiding students to class, socialising and helping students at lunch time.
The volunteer will be allocated to particular tutor groups/departments during the initial weeks of the placement according to interests, skills and needs of the students.
The College offers a wide range of extra curricular activities for the students which volunteers are also encouraged to participate in. These could be sporting activities, creative arts, cinema club, etc. and offer volunteers the opportunity to try new activities, develop new interests and also a chance to interact with the students in a more social setting. The volunteers will also have the opportunity to contribute creatively by developing new activities for the students in line with their own areas of interest.
Condições: Accommodation and Food: The volunteer is accommodated on site at the School and College in self-contained units, which are shared with other volunteers. Within the accommodation each volunteer has his or her own bedroom. Although the volunteers’ accommodation is located at Treloar School and College it is separate from the students.
All meals are provided by the host organisation at the College canteen except during college holiday time when a food allowance is provided for volunteers who remain on site.
Holidays: The volunteer will be entitled to 2 days holiday for every month of voluntary service. The volunteer should take their holiday during the College holidays (Christmas, Easter and half terms).
Formação: Language training: If the volunteers are able to arrive to the UK on 24th August 2013 (prior to the start of their placement) they will be able to attend an intensive 8 day language course consisting of 25-hours of training provided by ICYE-UK. Due to the nature of the project the volunteers will have constant opportunity to practice their conversational language skills. ICYE UK will endeavour to help volunteers to access alternative means of improving their language skills, for example through local classes or language exchange sessions.
