Resumo: The hosting city was founded in 1221 and has
a population of about 1 500 000 people nowadays. This one of the largest city in Russia situated at the intersection of 2 huge rivers. A lot of traditional Russian arts were born here.
In the soviet times the city was a closed city, so people still don’t have many chances to communicate with foreigners. Foreign languages are not very prevailing here, and you have to know Russian a little bit at least to be able to communicate with locals. But people are very friendly to those who re
spect local culture and inhabitants, and ready to communicate
and cooperate with foreigners. In terest of youth to foreign cultu res is growing every day. The town has quite strong relations with Germans, because of the twin city – Essen. There are some cultural centers– Allia
nce Françoise, Japanese center, Swedish center, Czech center etc. So foreigners can find people speaking in thei
r mother tongues there.
Inhabitants in the town lead a measur ed mode of life, their life’s temp is not so intensive like in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. But, in the same time, there is a lot of opportunity for self- realization and emotional life here – extreme s
ports, night clubs, museums, theatres, parks, fitness centers, libraries etc.
Everybody can find a way to be sa tisfied in his interests and
hobbies.

The selection process involves a written CV, Motivation letter and possibly an interview via skype/telephone. Volunteers are asked to fill in certain form of CV where they have opportunity to present their background and skills, as well as to express their motivation to do EVS project in our organization, motivation to volunteer and to discover Russia. Opinion of sending organization on the candidate is also taken into account during selection process. All the candidates are presented to the hosting organization and they volunteer is selected on the following criteria:
- motivation to work with youth and children;
- readiness to learn Russian and to communicate in Russian; knowledge of (some) Russian is advisable.
- readiness to promote culture;
- organizing skills; creativity and artistic skills (drawing, singing, dancing) are welcome.
Another assocaition and our are very experienced organizations in hosting EVS volunteers and always divide staff work and work of volunteers. EVS volunteers always realize only project activities, and if they still have a motivation to do more they have a possibility to lead their own mini-project, like workshops for orphans, so this is additional service for local children or youth. The most important criteria is strong motivation to do voluntary service and learn a lot from the project! . With some partners, our contact point outside EVS, has strong cooperation for a long time and thus, it is easier and more secure to deal with the project. Type of the Sending Organization nevertheless could be any – we are open to experienced organizations as well as to new ones. We would prefer to have volunteer, strongly supported not only by us and another association, but also by Sending Organization. We highly appreciate partnership process and make sure we are fully involved into preparation stage of the project – activity agreement, visa etc.
The hosting association is already waiting for 2 new volunteers from Germany and Slovakia, they are to come in the beginning of October 2012, sending organizations being German YMCA and Mladiinfo.
age: 18 until 30 years old
Tarefas: First of all it is significant to mention that before volunteers come there is a meeting of all staff members and Russian volunteers involved in the project. They plan activities for the next year within the project and for volunteers to adopt; and share responsibilities. The project will give the experience of international work for the volunteers, as well as practice in communication with people from different background. During the project the volunteers will practice public presentation skills, project management, individual consulting, and work in a team. Besides the volunteers will improve their linguistic skills. The project will help volunteers to break stereotypes. The volunteer would be an additional person who could add his/her ideas to create an intercultural and multilingual dimension for the project. Usually volunteers are required to have some special skills to succeed in implementing the project, they will also need to speak some Russian to adopt to the Russian reality, to communicate easily to people that will surround them, that is why we will offer Russian courses to them as soon as they arrive. If volunteers need any special skills and experience to implement the project that they will not have when they arrive, specialist of Centre will be glad to offer volunteers special training – on specifics of work, intercultural communication or working with children. They are also shown various methods of organizing activities and may choose which they consider to be more suitable. There will be trainees who will help volunteers with implementation of the project, preparing activities and etc. We will attract Russian volunteers and will have some budget from Centre to develop the project. It is significant to mention evaluation and reflection process Volunteers will meet weekly with coordinator responsible for the implementation of the project. Volunteers will be asked for the feedback, it is vital to know what difficulties volunteers face, if there are any wishes, questions. They will analyse together achieved results and make plans for the future. The coordinator responsible for the volunteers will be able to stimulate and inspire volunteers.
The daily work with youth offers a wide variety of exchange possibilities (music and songs, dance, storytelling & of course, literature…). Creating an open mind and an interest in discovering other languages and countries is achieved so in a very natural way based on a daily contact and exchange - it becomes a sort of natural effect of becoming familiar with each other. Volunteers will participate in the following activities:
- preparing the events of the Language Club for young and adult people (choosing the main theme, making up the scenario, looking for interesting materials, preparing some decoration). We are planning to organize the following events: the day of national games, the mind game for children, the international camp for children, the international summer school, the events connected to different holiday (April Fools Day, Earth Day), the events for children Young Learners, working with children from orphanages of the region and children with the physical and mental disabilities.
- preparing and carrying the series of master classes of different languages with the native speakers (English, German, Turkish, Spanish, etc.),
- preparing and carrying out the events for schoolchildren (choosing the main theme, making up the scenario, looking for interesting materials, preparing some decoration),
- organizing the work of the English Discussion Club (choosing topics, leading the discussions).
All the volunteers are expected to participate in implementing the events of the Language Club. The volunteers will be free in choosing the themes and the activities of the events. Volunteers will have all the needed facilities, for example they may use computer, laptops, notebooks, printer, stationery (paper, scissors and etc.). Everyday activities beside work: Russian volunteers and mentors try to involve the volunteers into the social and cultural life of the city. They offer the EVS volunteers different activities, such as visiting theatres, cinemas, museums, concerts, night clubs and so on. There are also a lot of interesting activities in School of the Russian language Enjoy Russian for example Food party, Welcome party, excursions and so on, EVS volunteers may join them.
Host families also play an important role in the everyday life of the volunteers. A lot of volunteers become good friends with the host family and continue to communicate even after the end of the project. Volunteers have choice: they can stay and enjoy their holidays here as there are a lot of places to visit in Karelia or visit other places in Russia, we are ready to consult them on travelling opportunities. They can use 2 days per month separately or accumulate them and use in future. It is up to them to decide what is better.
