Resumo: The project will take place in youth centre that is situated in the centre, the economic and cultural centre of Municipality. The town is quite distant from bigger cities. The traffic connections are bad as it is situated in the mountaneous part of the Severna Primorska region. Better connections to other bigger towns are available in Idrija (20 km away by bus) to travel to the capital Ljubljana or in Most na Soci, where you can take a train to get to Nova Gorica or to beautiful nature in the surroundings of Lake Bohinj. From Ljubljana, 80 km away from the town, there are excellent bus and train connections to other parts of Slovenia and foreign countries. The airport is also close.
The town has around 1600 inhabitants, in the entire municipality there are around 5000 people. The majority of local people makes a living by working in the ETA factory in the town, an important line of business is also agriculture, as well as tourism. Unemployment is quite low in this region, even though the town also faces the s.c. brain drain, where young people with higher education move to bigger towns and cities, like Ljubljana. Young people with higher education have trouble finding employment, as there are no jobs for educated people. The youth activities in the town are mostly done on a voluntary basis, as the local politics does not have a good youth strategy that would allow more jobs for young people in the field of youth work, culture, sports and education. This consequently means that the place lacks youth petitions and activities. EVS project will bring something fresh as the feeling of development of important and useful (youth) activities.
Even though it is quite far-off the cities, the cultural and sport happenings are really diverse and of top quality. Cultural heritage is one of the strongest points , and natural heritage as well. There are many footpaths and cycle paths that take the visitor to the wonderful hills and forest of Cerkljanska region.
As stated, this town is rich in cultural and sports events as many local people are active in several associations working in different fields. The offer of concerts is rich; the majority of them are organised in our youth centre and other organization and in the villages in the surroundings, where they organise also amateur theatre plays.
The museum often prepares exhibitions, the library offers evenings of reading and fairy-tale hours, through the year one also can attend festivals – as the international festival Jazz, all-year international festival, the street theatre festival.
Free time can be spent also in other ways. Besides in the youth centre that is open daily and one can get enough room to be creative in many fields, the volunteer can take a hike on the close footpaths that lead through wonderful woods. On one of these paths one can stop at the s.c. fitness in nature: - exercise equipment set into the woods. In the vicinity there is also a climbing venue Lutne skale that serves perfectly the needs of a starter as of an experienced climber. This town also has a covered pool, sauna and fitness, open all days. It is also known for its ski centre where one can borrow the skiing equipment.
The neighbouring towns there are bigger music festivals with international artists, among those well-known. They also have libraries with more books in foreign languages available. The youth centre is also connected with other peer organisation across Slovenia that the volunteer could visit and have several educational courses there, if s/he would want it.
The volunteer will get to know the local environment with the help of mentors and local volunteers. Besides getting familiar with the town, which will happen in his/her first days of living here and where s/he will learn the location of shops, library, post office, and other information necessary for living here, s/he will have an opportunity to be guided to all local landmarks and see the sights described above. Living in here does not bring any special rules to be taken into account by the volunteer. But it is worth to mention that this town is really a small community which will bring a really close connection with the local population.
Perfil: In the youth centre we would like to host a person of full age, who would like to gain knowledge in the areas we in the centre work on. We have graphic design, video and audio production and photography in mind. We want to host a person who is willing to work in a small club and in a small community; a creative, independent and (socially) critical person, as it is desired for people to express their opinions and ideas that are taken into account in the consensual decision making process. We would welcome a person that knows how to transfer his/her knowledge to others, also in form of organized classes, courses and workshops.
When choosing the potential volunteers all the existing team of the organization activists, employees as well as volunteers, will take part. The choice will be consensual, based on pre-prepared criteria, without discrimination of the potential volunteers.
An open and transparent procedure of choosing the volunteers will be guaranteed by posts on the existing relevant forums for seekers of EVS organisations, internal news through the partner base of youth center, social media and networks. The application of the interested volunteers will be collected till a previously set date, then get in touch with the sending organization and potential volunteers and this way get more information about the volunteer’s competence, wishes, character, and similar. On the basis of previously set criteria we will hold a special meeting to discuss and select the individual to volunteer.
We would like to cooperate with peer youth organizations, meaning the organizations working in the cultural, arts, human rights and youth work and similar.
Tarefas: The youth centre has a well-trained team working together for several years. We can offer learning opportunities and mentor assistance in all fields, the centre is active in.
What we have in mind are especially know-how about organisation and youth centre management, execution of the daily and club programme, shadow theatre skills, video, photo and audio arts and graphic design. The volunteer will be able to learn about the rich cultural heritage of Cerkljanska region. The person who will work and live with us will be encouraged to learn and use the Slovenian language. For this purpose we will organise a course of Slovene language, held by a teacher of Slovene, teaching at the Elementary school. We have namely held a course of Slovenian language in cooperation with Agencija LARS, for the migrant workers from the former Yugoslavia republics. Previously mentioned teacher seems an appropriate teacher also because of our positive experience with her and her mastering other foreign languages.
Detailed planning of the activities of the project will be discussed with the volunteer, at the beginning of the project and also in the process of the project. With the chosen volunteer we will be in constant contact before the project’s start, where s/he will be able to express his/her wishes, needs and expectations. This way we can more easily make them a part of the plan. His wishes and needs will be taken into account during the process of the project: his/her ideas and wishes can be presented on the weekly meetings where the ideas can be discusses in the team and the final decision will be made consensually.
Approximate weekly schedule of the volunteer will consist of the Slovene language course – 6 hours weekly (all in all 40 hours), which will be adapted to the volunteers needs. The work week will start on Tuesday and end on Saturday. On Sundays and Mondays will be free. Every Tuesday and Friday the volunteer will have meetings with the mentor, even though the mentor will be available to the volunteer all the time of his living in the town, especially in the first weeks. The volunteer will in the local elementary school have three times weekly the course of his maternal language, meanwhile s/he will help with the programme execution in the afternoon hours of the youth centre or work on his/her own projects. If s/he will want, s/he can also attend all the educational programmes, offered by the youth centre.
As a youth centre we will offer the volunteer all the equipment as the hosting organization has a lot if of top quality audio, video, computer equipment and has adequate space for friendly and creative work.
The EVS volunteer will cooperate with executing the daily and club programme, but promoting the international activities in the local community will also have an important role, as we wish they would be more present to a greater degree here. The EVS volunteer will also share his/her knowledge with the interested individuals.
Examples of typical activities that can be done in the center by the volunteer is execution of the daily and club programme, cooperation with the youth centre production (video group, shadow theatre, photography group,...), designing the promotional material for events in the youth centre (posters, flyers), making the Youthpass and other.
Activities that the volunteer can make on his/her own range from his own film and audio projects, individual exhibitions and workshops.
The coordinator of the entire project EVS will be Simon Kenda, the vice president of the club. He performs administrative and management tasks and takes care of the technical equipment. He is a sound engineer and one of the events organiser. The mentor to the volunteer during his/her stay with us will be Matjaz Peternelj, the president of the club. Matjaz is the leader of the youth center and administrative worker, and also a mentor to all volunteers, engaged in spreading information and counselling for young people. He has knowledge in graphic design and promotional activities that is why he will mentor the volunteer with these activities. Mentors in the field of photography will be Marko Keber and Branka Prezelj, one of the most active members in the photography group of the youth centre. Gasper Ursic, a cameraman, director, screenwriter and producer of short amateur films, will mentor the volunteer in video skills. He also graduated in video arts and is still studying video. In the visual art mentors will be Simon Hudolin, Mateja Rojc and Katarina Stucin, who are active in arts and also have formal education. The audio art will be covered by Gasper Tavcar, a known DJ and electronic music producer.
The coordinator of the whole project will coordinate volunteer's activities and all the administrative work, as also the technical support of the project. The mentor Matjaz Peternelj will be the "main" mentor to the volunteer, which means s/he will be with him/her spending free time together, offering him/her educational and moral support and teach him/her design and promotional activities. Other mentors will take care for several separate activities and/or projects, covering their knowledge and areas. In case it shows up that one of other mentors will understand better with him/her, he can become his/her "main" mentor.
Assuming the responsibilities for work by the volunteer will be gradual, step by step. From the start he will work in a group to get to know the work methods and adapt more easily to the work environment and meets all the other volunteers and employees at the youth centre. When s/he will gain enough knowledge and experience, s/he can work on his/her own, of course s/he can always count on the mentor support.
The volunteer will be accommodated in one of many appartments. The volunteer will have access to internet, a kitchen and the bathroom will be shared. S/he will be able to eat in one of restaurants, but s/he will also be able to prepare his/her own food as s/he will have kitchen disposable. S/he can buy food and other necessary things in the local shops.
As mentioned before, the youth centre cooperates with other organisations and institutions locally and regionally. In the local environment we see the volunteer cooperating with the annual fest, Music School in museum, where s/he could perform or work on his project, the Elementary School where the course of his/her maternal language and work with children. On the regional level we cooperate with the Students Club where the volunteer could promote EVS among students, the Centre of education and training, where s/he could be part of the project with people with special needs. We cooperate with other nongovernmental and civil organisations.
