Resumo: EVS in a Night shelter

EVS volunteers will work alongside and be part of a team of full time staff and part time volunteers. All of which will work together to provide a safe environment and the best possible service to the homeless residents of the shelter.

In particular by hosting volunteers we hope to open new possibilities for the project and its residents. The project staff is often tied up with providing the basic service required (e.g. preparing meals, ensuring health and safety etc.), however, the volunteers are free to focus on additional
activities which will benefit the residents. Furthermore, as mentioned above, there will also be social activities
associated with the work, such as going to the cinema, theatre or other cultural activities as well as participating in sports or educational programs.
It is also important to stress that under no circumstances
the volunteer would be left alone with any of the residents and will always work closely together with the project staff.

Including an EVS element to this project is exciting (for the project and for volunteers), as the volunteers will be
working with individuals who have had no contact with 'life outside Dublin'.

We hope EVS will bring a cultural dimension to the project, which offers these individuals, a small taste of what life is like outside their home-town, including different languages, food, cultures and ideas.

Though their roles are completely different that staff members, we strive to have our volunteers (just like our staff) well trained for the work they carry out. They will receive training in active listening, coping with stressful situations, diverting violence and aggression, first aid, fire safety etc. Further they will gain a broad range of experience extremely beneficial to their future life and personal development. These include communication skills, responding to challenging situations and the basic ins and outs of providing care for people in need.

In all such activities Volunteers will be supervised either by their mentor or by project staff.
To date, volunteers have greatly enhanced the service that we can provide for our residents. They bring a huge intercultural dimension to the lives of the clients that we work with. Volunteers work is centred around added value activities.

- Volunteers will be provided with a weekly pocket money allowance in Pounds Sterling (Belfast) or Euros (Dublin).

- EVS volunteers get approximately 2 days of annual leave for every month volunteered, and also are entitled to
