Resumo: EVS volunteers will work alongside and be part of a team of full time staff and part time volunteers. All of which will work together to provide a safe environment and the best possible service to the young street homeless residents of the shelter.

We hope to open new possibilities for the project and its residents. The project staff is often tied up with providing the basic service required (e.g. preparing meals, ensuring health and safety etc.), however, the volunteers are free to focus on
additional activities which will benefit the residents. One major aspect is simply to take time to listen and talk to
residents, sit down together with them and have dinner or watch T.V. Further they could also try to engage residents in other activities, such as playing board games or cards.

Including an EVS element to this project is exciting, as the volunteers will be working with individuals who have had no contact with 'life outside Dublin'. We hope EVS will bring a cultural dimension to the project, which offers these individuals, a small taste of what life is like outside their home-town, including different languages, food, cultures and ideas.

You will receive training in active listening, coping with stressful situations, diverting violence and aggression, first aid, fire safety etc.

The mentor takes the responsibility of maintaining regular contact with the volunteer, assisting them in relation to
their accommodation and work/life balance as well as meeting with them bi-monthly in a supervisory capacity to monitor their learning and development throughout the project. They will also remain in contact with them after the EVS activity in order to provide them with the Youthpass-EVS and any other references or certificates which are required by the volunteer.

Perfil: - Age: 18 until 30 years old
- interested in working with disadvantaged individuals
- who could bring something of their own experiences
- basic knowledge of English.

While the aim of the activity is to add value to the lives of the service users and to influence the work and development of the organisation, we are quite flexible as to how this will be achieved.

Tarefas: From the first day they arrive it is made clear that they are not staff members and that if they ever feel unsafe, they are to leave the room and inform a member of staff. All EVS volunteers are trained in CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) training so that they can recognise any escalation in a service user’s behaviour.

Horário: The volunteer will spend their 30-35 hour working week at activities in their project. This may also include language and role training, volunteer team meetings, staff team meetings or team days, etc.

Condições: - Volunteers will be offered a single room in a house in their chosen Project’s city. The main facilities such as kitchen and living space will be shared with other volunteers.
Volunteers will be given specific information about their particular living arrangements, before deciding whether to accept the offer. The house will be fully furnished and equipped with bedding, pots and pans etc.

- Volunteers will be provided with a weekly pocket money allowance in Pounds Sterling (Belfast) or Euros (Dublin).

- EVS volunteers get approximately 2 days of annual leave for every month volunteered, and also are entitled to
take Bank Holidays).

If the project has catering facilities they may eat their meals
there. Volunteers will prepare their own meals in their house, in a kitchen shared with other volunteers.

The allowance will be paid weekly by either the mentor or the member of staff on duty, when the mentor is not available.
Volunteers will be given support to obtain an Irish bank account so that direct deposits can be arranged.
