Resumo: The socio-economic situation is stabilising in Northern Ireland, but the legacy of 30 years of civil strife is still very evident and there are still sporadic instances of "trouble".

Northern Ireland society is still divided with many people living in predominantly Protestant or Catholic areas and with most children going to either Protestant or Catholic schools.
Northern Ireland has a very rich, if divided, culture and has many areas of outstanding natural beauty.

The refuges are close to all the amenities and facilities which women and children need - i.e. shops, schools, GP surgeries, hospitals, police stations and leisure facilities. The refuges are in residential, 'mixed' areas, which enable women and children from both communities to access the services and supports available.
