Resumo: We are a network of people from all over the continent, who perceive Europe not as an idealistic aim but a fact, an ongoing challenge. While most discussions and activities still take place in national contexts, we work together in order to contribute to the development of the European civil society. As an organisation, we are non- partisan and not linked to any religion.
Our office is located not far away from the centre. We share the office rooms with several small companies. Usually, 8 - 10 people aged 25 - 40 work there. From our organisation, usually 1-2 people are present together with the volunteer. The members of the board, the executive officer and some project team members have continuous contact with our volunteer. Although our currently 60 members live in different European countries, there is a core group of about 10 activitsts (and approx. 30 supporters) present in the city which jointly takes care of the social integration of our volunteers. In addition, we have good contacts to social initiatives and groups who may invite our volunteers to their meetings.
The city offers great opportunities in a broad variety: cultural, political, religious, etc. At the crossroad between Western and Eastern Europe, the city is the ideal place of living up to the idea of an expanding and deepening Europe. Our volunteers usually live in flat-sharing with students or young professionals in the various in-scene districts of the city.
The association has been a host organisation since 2005 and takes care of 2 EVS volunteers each year (one starting in spring, one in autumn). We have also realised other projects (e.g. trainings, youth exchanges) within the YOUTH IN ACTION programme. We encourage and assist our volunteers in realizing their own projects within YiA.
The EVS responsibles (incl. Mentor) who take care of hosting and sending activities in our organisation have long-standing experience with the programme and with working with volunteers from various European countries.
Perfil: We appreciate volunteers who show
-Self-initiative and the ability to work autonomously
-A mental drive to make active contributions, both on a planning as on an implementing level
-European awareness: this does not mean you have to be an enthusiastic pro-European. More important for us is, you have an opinion of your own regardless its political direction and are interested in following up current developments on the European continent
-A certain organisational experience: not necessarily professionally, but for instance from previous engagements in your local student organisation, youth associations, etc.
-A minimum proficiency in German language. Although all the members of our staff and practically all our project freelancers speak English, your work in this city will be facilitated a lot if you already speak at least some German. It is not important at all you are already brilliant with declinations or other language difficulties, but understanding at least the essence of German could be a great advantage for you. We provide a language course for your further improvement.
Profile of a promising sending organisation:
-No party-political affiliation
-Active at a local grass-roots level but willing to enlarge its European network
-Willingness to select their sending volunteer on a quality-based selection procedure
Tarefas: We provide our volunteers with opportunities to experience during their stay abroad and during the work with us different working styles and methods, different points of view and cultures. They develop their ability to work in heterogeneous and changing teams as well as their language skills. The approx. work share is 30% administrative support - 30% project work (often also with events all over Europe) - 30% own iniative - 10% training (Language course etc.). We identify the talents and skills of our volunteers and give them the chance to apply and improve them. In addition to taking care of some regular office work such as reading and replying to emails, the volunteers are expected to contribute with their own ideas to the various programmes and fields of cooperation of hosting organization.
During the first week the volunteers get the opportunity to orientate themselves and to get to know our organisation. Afterwards, the concrete tasks and plans are agreed upon in regular talks and weekly meetings with the volunteer, who subsequently - as far as possible - takes over responsibility and is a team member with equal rights.
The topics of the volunteer's work are guided by the organisation's fields of action, but are based on the specific interest of each volunteer. Within this framework, own ideas and initiatives are more than welcome and receive active support wherever possible.
The tutor is a Flemish-Belgian who was once himself a EVS volunteer. He knows perfectly how the programme is functioning and how to deal with its particular proper-ties in order to safeguard the caring for a European volunteer. He holds regular meetings with the volunteer. As a former board member who is no longer directly involved in everyday work, he can reflect on work experience with the volunteer and offer support regarding the general integration in the organization.
